Dear Sunrise Orchards Customers, 2012 Sunrise Calendar - Dates of Interest I t is once again that time of the year... time to start thinking about fall and Sunrise apples. What a year it has been AUGUST (Hours of Business: 9am to 5pm daily) 11 We will open our retail doors today! here at Sunrise Orchards!!! When you make your annual trip to the orchard this year, you may notice a little more gray hair on many of us. That is what happens when there is a lack of rain and temperatures in Wisconsin are in the 80’s and 90’s for the month of March and then in the 20’s in April. While many people were enjoying the warm month of March, we knew there were big problems ahead and yes we were right. While we were in full bloom, the temperatures then decided to go into the 20’s. This is when all of the worrying began. But with a lot of praying, a little luck, very active bees for pollinating and other things that we are not sure of, we are happy to say that we have a beautiful crop of apples here at Sunrise for the 2012 season. We feel very fortunate and blessed with crop that we have for our customers this year. SEPTEMBER (Hours of Business: 9am to 5pm daily) 1-2-3 Annual Sunrise Honeycrisp Days... Fall has arrived and so have all the goodies that you have come to enjoy at the orchards. DELICIOUS is the word for Honeycrisp in 2012. 8-9 Honeycrisp Days Continue... such a nice crop we extended Honeycrisp days in 2012. 15-18 Donut Days... this weekend we are celebrating our famous Sunrise Apple Cider Donuts. 22-23 “An Apple a Day Keeps the Doctor Away”... New this year: We are partnering with Vernon Memorial Healthcare to have the 1st Annual Sunrise Healthcare Fair. Free blood pressure checks and healthy living promotional activities for all ages. A Sunrise Orchard Cookbook ... Not Quite Enough! A great big “Thank You” to those of you who sent in, called in and e-mailed in your favorite recipe to be put in our “Sunrise Cookbook”. The total number submitted was 263... NOT QUITE ENOUGH! We are hoping for over 500 recipes to make this one of the best recipe books you could have in your cupboard. We are going to try it again this year. Remember that these do not have to be apple recipes. They just need to be recipes that you and your family cherish and would like to share with the wonderful cooks that make a trip to Sunrise Orchards each year. Apple recipes are great, but we are looking for all of your favorites! We are hoping to complete our task for the 2013 apple season and have the best recipe book around! Already known for being a healthy snack, apples have now been linked to lowering the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, according to a new research study. The long term study recently published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that participants who ate 5 or more apples per week had a 23% lower risk of developing the disease. Apples are a nutritious, healthy and everyday food. They have been associated with helping to improve outcomes related to everything from weight loss to different types of cancer, heart disease and even asthma. Adding type 2 diabetes to the list proves even more that “An Apple A Day Keeps the Doctor Away!” RECIPES Caramel Apple Cheesecake Bars A Sunrise Favorite Slow Cooker Apple Pork Tenderloins Crust: 2c. of flour, /2c. firmly packed brown sugar, Ingredients: 1-2 lb pork tenderloin, 1 large onion halved and cut into 1/4 in. slices, 2 med. tart Sunrise apples-peeled, cored and coarsely chopped, 2T. apple jelly, 1T. apple vinegar, salt and coarsely ground pepper to taste. Directions: Brown pork tenderloin in corn oil in a skillet over medium heat. Remove from the skillet and place in slow cooker. Add remaining ingredients to crock pot, cover and cook on low heat setting for 7-9 hours. A tasty dish to come home to on a cool fall evening after a long day at work... great served on white rice! 1 1c. softened butter Cheesecake Filling: 3-8oz. pkgs. of softened cream cheese, 3/4c. sugar plus 2T.-divided, 3 lg. eggs, 11/2t. vanilla extract Apples: 3 Sunrise apples - peeled, and finely chopped. (Cortland, Lura Red, or Haralson are our favorite) 1/2t. ground cinnamon, 1 /4t. ground nutmeg Streusel Topping: 1c. firmly packed brown sugar, 1c. flour, 1/2c. quick cooking oats, 1 /2c. softened butter Additional Ingredients: 1/2c. caramel topping Directions: Preheat oven to 350o. In med. bowl combine flour and brown sugar. Cut in butter with pastry blender (or 2 forks) until mixture is crumbly. Press evenly into a 9x13 baking pan lined with heavy aluminum foil. Bake for 15min or until lightly browned. In a large bowl, beat cream cheese with 3/4c. sugar with an electric mixer at medium speed until smooth. Add the eggs one at a time and add vanilla. Stir to combine. Pour over the warm crust. In a small bowl, stir together the chopped apples, the remaining 2T. sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg. Spoon evenly over the cream cheese mixture. Sprinkle evenly with the streusel topping that has been mixed together thoroughly ahead of time in a small bowl. Bake 40-45 minutes or until the filling is set. Drizzle with the caramel topping and let cool. Serve cold and enjoy! Sunrise Apple Recommendation... Cortland y this time we hope that all of our customers have tried the Cortland apple. An easy apple to recommend.... great for eating, baking and drying. Cortland is an old time apple doing well in the modern age and good for anything that you might want to use it for. Cortland never disappoints and always tastes great! B Sour Cream Apple Squares Ingredients: 2c. flour, 2c. packed brown sugar, 1/2c. softened butter, 1c. chopped walnuts, 1t. baking soda, 1/2t. salt, 1t. cinnamon, 1/8t. ground nutmeg, 1-8oz. container sour cream, 1 egg, 1t. vanilla extract, 2c. peeled, cored and finely chopped Cortland apples. Directions: Preheat oven to 350o. Beat flour, brown sugar and butter in a large bowl with an electric mixer on low speed until crumbly. Stir in walnuts. Measure 2 /4c. crumbly mixture; press into an ungreased 9x13 inch baking pan. In the same bowl, stir in the remaining crumbly mixture with the next seven ingredients until well mixed. Stir in apples. Spoon into baking pan over crumb crust. Bake 3040 minutes or until a wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool slightly in pan before cutting into squares. Store covered in refrigerator. Makes 12 servings.
