It is with sad, heavy hearts we announce the sudden, unexpected death of Laurence (Larry) James Andrais on September 16, 2014 at the age of 54 years. Larry will be deeply missed by his wife Sandra, daughters Kimberly (Mark) and Kerri-Ann; sister Betty; brothers David (Jaqui) and Allen (Mary Lou); motherand father-in-law Ray and Diane Schepp; brother-in-law Darren (Peggy); 5 nieces, many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. He is predeceased by his mother Olga in 1981 and father Harold in 2011. Larry started his career with ESSO, moving from Edmonton to Calgary 30 years ago. There, he and Sandra raised their two girls until they all moved to an acreage, starting a small “Dr. Dolittle” ranch that included donkeys, llamas and a horse. Larry travelled a lot of the world with his job but loved nothing more than to come home and “fix” anything around the yard and house. He enjoyed having friends over for a wiener roast and drinks around the fire pit. He also loved watching Kimberly jumping her horse and always encouraged Kerri-Ann to have fun and ride safe on her motor bike. Larry was so looking forward to his retirement, having the time to ride his motor bike and to explore more of the world. Larry would let everyone know how many days he had left to work, down to the minute (he had 302 days). We will be having one heck of a “retirement “party next summer for you Larry!!! C’mon.” The documentary also shows the human side of the players – including watching Billsten and Chadsey visit Pytlarz at the hospital after the coach broke his leg in three places in a motor vehicle collision last November. “It was weird watching that on film,” Chadsey said. “I remember being so worried and then being relieved that everything is going to be okay. The camera was filming the whole thing.” Lubig said the Pytlarz accident through him for a loop. “I was on set directing a video for George Canyon,” Lubig said. “And I got this phone call from Chadsey, telling me Jason was in the hospital. In the middle of directing this video, I had to organize getting a camera for the hospital.” Pytlarz said the film caught the spirit of the season and the closeness of the Drillers in their inaugural season. “It really takes me back – there is film of us playing games in our practice jerseys because we hadn’t got our jerseys in yet,” Pytlarz said. “We were going for the 24/7 look. It was tough at times (talking to the players). It’s hard to stay focused in the dressing room when there is a distraction in front of your face.” Those distractions didn’t stop Pytlarz from speaking straight from the heart to his players, including the colourful language one would expect from grown men playing highly competitive hockey. “At the end of the day, it is men being men playing hockey,” Pytlarz said. “Sometimes you have to have the hard talks.” Pytlarz doesn’t know when the next viewing of the film will be, but he wants it to be seen. “The film is a way to get the word out about our team,” Pytlarz said. “It just got wrapped up about two weeks ago, se we are figuring out what we want to do with it… With the language we got to be careful that we don’t have kids watching it.” The Oct. 1 premiere has Billsten chomping at the bit to get back on the ice. “It rejuvenated me to play again this season,” Billsten said. “The smiles on everyone’s faces, the fun times we have and why you leave work early, miss family dinners and special occasions.” The Road to Allan is a work in progress. After all, this year is the first the Drillers can compete for the Allan Cup, given to the best Senior Men’s team in Canada. Lubig will be back on the bus filming the Drillers’ ride in 2014-15. “Originally, it was planned to be a six-part series and that is still the goal,” Lubig said. “The story of The Road to Allan isn’t finished yet… Right now, it’s just the Cliff Notes version of it.” Lubig said the documentary may be on the Drillers website in the future. To view a trailer of the documentary go to www. theroadtoallan.com just tips the ball over his team’s blockers. “You can usually judge when you think they are going to tip,” Powell said. “You have a little bit of extra time, but it usually means you are diving all over the floor trying to get the tip up for a good pass.” Kara Hawker got the taste of playing libero for the Strathcona-Tweedsmuir Spartans girls team last season. She’s smothering the floor for the Spartans this season. “It always feels so good when you get a dig up from a big hitter,” Hawker said. “Then you can get a pass to a setter and there’s a big hit.” She said while she misses not serving in the games, Hawker keeps her skills up by doing dozens of serves in practice. None of them are bothered by the fact they are a horse of a different colour when on the floor with their teammates. “You stand out in the crowd, but it doesn’t bother me,” Hofman said. “I still feel a part of the team.” Assistant Editor The Okotoks Drillers made a trip down the red carpet before hitting the road for the upcoming Senior men’s hockey season. The Road to Allan, a documentary of the Okotoks Drillers’ first-year in the Chinook Hockey League last season, made its premiere at the Shawnessy Landmark Theatre in Calgary on Oct. 1. The documentary follows the players at the rink, on the buses and places inbetween during the Drillers’ journey in their inaugural season. It was the passion of the senior men’s team which caught the eye of director Stephen Lubig. “The notion that these guys loved hockey so much that they are willing to sacrifice time away from home, family, they aren’t getting paid — they aren’t even breaking even,” Lubig said. “You know it is all about their passion.” The camera captures the real deal of the camaraderie among the Drillers, including the team’s humourous pre-season party, a long winless November and ultimately the celebration of a provincial Sr. men’s. AA title. (The Drillers were ineligible to compete for the Chinook League title and the Allan Cup in their expansion year. The Allan Cup is for the national Sr. AAA level). At times it hits home harder than a check from Bruce Campbell/OWW The Okotoks Drillers celebrate winning the senior men’s AA provincial championship during a scene from the documentary The Road To Allan. alternate captain Jeremy Chadsey. “Once you kind of get used to the camera being there, you start being more real,” Chadsey said. “You’re not saying the typical hockey clichés. You’re turning more into JR (Jeremy Roenick).” Chadsey and his best friend, captain Curtis Billsten, along with the Drillers coach and founder Jason Pytlarz were the main topics in the film. Billsten wasn’t totally sold on the film initially. “To be honest at first we thought this was a little bit Libero, continued from page 61 She said trying to give the setter the ideal pass is the biggest challenge. “As a libero you’re expected to get every pass up and it is difficult to do,” she said. Rydan Powell is wearing the off-coloured jersey for the Drillers Sr. boys team. “Mr. Bretzlaff (Drillers coach Leigh Bretzlaff) kind of picked the position for me because I wasn’t that tall. I could also pass pretty well.” He said one of the most difficult plays is expecting a smash and the opposition oKotoKs evanGelIcal Free cHurcH st.
