It is very important that every child comes to school wearing winter coats, boots, hats, and mittens. If you need assistance with any of this clothing, please let us know. Valentine’s Day is a favorite day in February. Students are looking forward to giving and receiving special Valentines from their friends. Student Council will be selling Valentines/suckers again this year. Sales begin on Monday, Feb. 9 and continue through Thursday, Feb. 12. You can send a Valentine and sucker to anyone for only 25 cents! Valentines will be delivered on Thursday afternoon, Feb. 12 to all classrooms and other BV schools. Any Valentines for family members will be sent home with the sending student. Valentines can also be bought from moms, dads, grandmas, and grandpas to send to their students at Fred Assam Elementary. Help us promote Acts of Kindness and support Ashley Johnson – RBE student who was recently diagnosed with cancer. Conferences will be held on Tuesday, February 10. This is an exciting opportunity to visit your child’s teacher and celebrate learning! Fourth Grade students will be participating in the NAEP (National Assessment of Educational Progress) testing on February 24. All results for math, reading, and science are reported as a state – no individual, school, or district scores are available. This test measures what students across the entire country have learned in school. The elementary Science Fair will be held on Monday, March 9! If your student has an interest in science and would like to participate, be sure to find the registration form included in this newsletter. We are continuing to grow across the district, as of today we are at 48 students! Thank you to the many people who have donated Brandon Valley Lynx gear, every Friday or Spirit Day we have a majority of our kids representing their school colors. The second half of the year we are busy preparing for the state tests. This year many of our students will be participating in the NAEP, Smarter Balance, and also the annual English language Proficiency test. A reminder to parents and kids to make sure to get a good nights sleep, eat breakfast, and have those #2 pencils sharpened. Wish us the best of luck on these next few months of testing! Orchestra Notes: Our orchestra students are continuing to learn new skills on their instruments. The fourth grade students are working hard on bowing and creating a good sound on the instrument. This is a skill that takes a good bit of work! A little bit every day makes a big difference in the progress. Fifth grade students are learning new bowing styles as well as new literature. Both groups will perform at the Performing Arts Center on May 18. Keep practicing! After reading the book “Have You Filled A Bucket Today” we learned that everyone carries an invisible bucket around. It is our job to always be a bucket filler by following the rules, helping people out, using good manners, caring about others’ feelings, and smiling! We did an experiment where we squeezed all the toothpaste out of a tube and compared it to unkind words or actions. Just like the toothpaste can’t be put back in the tube, neither can our words or actions. We challenge you to be a bucket filler too! What’s Happening in 1Be? For a creative writing project, students picked their favorite winter activity and created a snow globe scene writing about their favorite activity. Third graders enjoyed learning about the importance of Martin Luther King Jr and his work this month. We wrote our own “Dreams” for the world and hope to live up to these dreams to make the world a better place. As the weather turns colder, please make sure your student is dressed appropriately! Keep working on reading books for AR points! To look up the level and point amount for a book, go online to www.arbookfind.com. It’s very easy to use! You can check your student’s AR goals and points by logging onto the FAE webpage and clicking on Students, WebLynx, and Accelerated Reader. The 2nd quarter Principal’s Club winners were excited to attend a magic show performed by the magician Travis Nye. 3rd Grade Students are working hard at mastering fractions. We’ve identified, compared, ordered and found equivalent fractions all while having fun with our fraction kit manipulatives. Fourth Grade Students Expand their Accelerated Reader Skills Fred Assam Elementary fourth graders have begun working on a variety of nonfiction articles through the use of a new tool added to Accelerated Reader (AR). Accelerated Reader 360 takes learning to a deeper level. It enables teachers to balance independent reading practice at each student’s personal reading level with instructional reading practice of grade level text. AR 360 is designed to fit within the teacher’s existing reading block and it works in a whole group, small group, or as an independent reading practice tool. Our hope is that it motivates students to grow as readers of nonfiction. Through this new tool, students learn to read closely with built-in instructional skills practice activities that give them the opportunity to read, cite, write, and quiz. Each nonfiction article includes a highlight and tag activity and a “show you know” writing prompt. Then, students complete an AR Quiz, moving comfortably, into more complex texts and building the skills necessary for success in the content areas such as science and social studies. The Reading Dashboard from Renaissance (the creator of AR) brings independent and instructional reading data together with key data from multiple Renaissance products. Teachers will be able to view reports of progress in order to develop growth plans and monitor progress to move students forward confidently. What’s Up in 4 Harte? In Mrs. Harte’s Reading class we are working on the novel Crash, by Jerry Spinelli. It is about a boy named Crash and his best buddy Mike, who can’t think of anything more hilarious than making Webb’s life miserable. However Crash starts to realize that Webb may have something he may never gain, no matter how many touchdowns on the football field he makes. Webb is also a Quaker, which was a new topic for many of the students, so we took some time to research on the computers for a better understanding. Minute to Win It Fun!!! No Numbers in Math??? What?!? To begin our unit on Geometry the fifth graders are working on Tessellations! It’s hard to believe this is Math and not Art class! HEALTH NOTES FROM THE SCHOOL NURSE Margie Hanson, RN MEASLES (rubeola, hard measles, red measles) What is measles? Measles is an acute, highly contagious viral disease capable of producing epidemics. Measles is more common in winter and spring. Who gets measles? Although measles is usually considered a childhood disease, it can be contracted at any age. Generally, preschool children, adolescents, young adults and inadequately immunized individuals comprise the majority of measles cases in the United States. How is measles spread? Measles is spread by direct contact with nasal or throat secretions of infected people or, less frequently, by airborne transmission. Measles is one of the most readily transmitted communicable diseases. What are the symptoms of measles? Measles symptoms generally appear in two stages. In the first stage, the individual may have a runny nose, cough and a slight fever. The eyes may become reddened and sensitive to light while the fever consistently rises each day. The second stage begins on the third to seventh day and consists of a temperature of 103-105 F, and a red blotchy rash lasting four to seven days. The rash usually begins on the face and then spreads over the entire body. Koplik spots (little white spots) may also appear on the gums and inside of the cheeks. How soon do symptoms appear? Early symptoms like fever usually appear 10 days after exposure (range 7-12 days) and rash appears after 14 days (range 7-21 days). When and for how long is a person able to spread measles? An individual is able to transmit measles from four days before onset of rash and until four days after rash onset. Does past infection make a person immune? Yes. Permanent immunity is acquired after contracting the disease. What is the treatment for measles? There is no specific treatment for measles. What are the complications associated with measles? Pneumonia occurs in up to 6 percent of reported cases and amounts for 60 percent of deaths attributed to measles. Encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) may also occur. Other complications include middle ear infection and convulsions. Measles is more severe in infants and adults. How can measles be prevented? Maintaining the highest level of immunization against measles is the best preventive measure. Measles vaccine (MMR) may be given at 12-15 months of age. The second dose of MMR is given at 4-6 years of age. The vaccine is highly effective and two MMR shots usually produce lifelong immunity. Ideas taken from “Catching Readers Before They Fall!” by Johnson and Keier NFL Fuel Up to Play 60 has partnered with Brandon Valley School District to promote healthy lifestyles! Students in each elementary building participated in an essay contest promoting breakfast. Twelve winning essays were selected in each building – two at each grade level. Canvas photos will feature these students making positive and healthy lifestyle choices. These photos will be displayed in the lunchroom area at Fred Assam Elementary. Congratulations to the selected writers as well as all students who participated in the writing contest. 2015 BRANDON VALLEY COMMUNITY HEALTH FAIR Planning is under way for the Brandon Valley Community Health Fair! There are new activities, events and exhibits being planned! A few of the highlights include: ♥ Sanford Health’s MEGA heart exhibit – An inflatable, walk-through heart that allows you to explore the heart, learn about cardiovascular functions and observe examples of various types of heart disease. ♥ Heart Screenings – Blood Pressure, Cholesterol check, BMI, Framingham, EKG, and a CT (calcium score). Results provided that day except for the EKG (must be read by a physician). Cost of screening is $50. Participants must schedule their screening. Thursday, March 26, 2015 3:00 – 7:00pm Brandon Valley High School Commons Physical Education at FAE The month of January has been filled with many fun and exciting fitness movements in PE. We started the New Year by focusing on the following two words: Challenge and Encourage. We implemented the PE Central Cooperative Fitness Challenges to FAE. Our students participated in fitness challenges that were specific to their grade level. While students were participating in these challenges, the students worked incredibly hard at encouraging each other. We hope that these words can become part of their daily vocabulary and transfer to all areas of their lives. Below are a few of the challenges that your son/daughter participated in. I have been very pleased with their diligence in practicing over the Winter/Christmas break! Many of them came to their first lesson after the break very well prepared. It is exciting to see the student’s enthusiasm for instrumental music! As we continue to work together during January and February, we will be focusing the majority of our time on fundamental techniques found in our ‘Tradition of Excellence’ book. The individual practice time is very important in reinforcing these new concepts, so please continue to encourage your child with his/her practicing. Combined 5th/6th grade band concert!! We are excited to remind you to put Monday, Mar. 16, on your calendars! The students from our 5th and 6th grade bands will be joining forces to perform a combined concert for you. Each band will perform a few individual selections and then will join together to perform two works. This will be an exciting collaboration between our young players and we are looking forward to learning the new music for this concert. The performance will take place in the High School Auxiliary gym at 7:00pm that evening. Please mark your calendars for this fun evening of instrumental music!
