2003 St Louis Missouri JFO Convention
The 25th Anniversary Convention is fast approaching. Registration will be in
the next issue. Please note due to Easter, next year’s dates are April 9-13. Art Santen
promises to make this a special celebration for JFO Convention #25. If you want to
register at the hotel early, just call 1-800-2-RAMADA or call the Hotel direct at 1-314
-291-5100 (location is the Ramada Inn St Louis Airport). Let them know you are
with Just For Openers to obtain the $49 room rate (cut off is March 9th, 2003). For
members who plan on flying, you have two options for getting your openers and corkscrews to the convention. Due to very tight regulations, you are not allowed to carry
these items on board. You can either check them in with your luggage that is stored
in the hold of the airplane or you can mail them insured to either Art Santen or your
editor as Pat and I will be driving. If you are mailing them try to do so by the end of
March and ship them by insured priority mail.
B-22-28 Griesedieck Bros St Louis
Hek, you had better be there (St
Louis in April 2003). Hek was a
prohibition drink for the Griesedieck
Bros, one of the major St Louis
brewers. This is the one style “B”
that I am trying to get all of the ones
listed. Still need about 40.

JFO members at ABA, from left Bob Post, Art Santen, Vic Kroll, Ollie Hibbeler, Tom
Gormally, Bill Muma, Art Santen, Don Sherman, Harry Horn, Don Williams, Bill
Campbell. I don’t know who you would keep an eye on most, but I would vote for
Art Santen since he is in both pictures (and also because he got a great condition Williamson “Power Cone” corkscrew at a local antique mall for $35). Nice find Art.

“21st ABA Meeting Reno NV June 19-22” by Ollie Hibbeler #149
Shirley and I left home on Thursday morning, June 13th. Stayed overnite in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Drove
50 miles east on Interstate 80 the next morning to Walnut, Iowa where we attended a big 3 day indoor-outdoor antique show. I got a few items. The show was very dis-organized this year. I did pass on a lizard shaped cork
squeezer for $800.00. I needed to save my money for Reno. We returned west on I-80 to Lincoln, Neb. And arrived
at Cora Whelan’s home about 6:00 P.M. As always she made us welcome. We went out to supper and we talked up
a storm. Cora said that the J.F.O. group was very special to Don and her and she hoped to keep in touch with us all.
She said the family has decided to keep Don’s special openers on display in his collection room. These good people
worked very hard as hosts to not one, but two of our J.F.O. shows.
We left very early Saturday morning heading West. We stopped at Cabela’s Store in Sidney, Neb. Stopped
in Cheyenne, Wyo., went thru the beautiful Medicine Bow Mts. and thru Flaming Gorge National Park, Salt Lake
City, Utah. Visited the sights in and around there. On to the Booneville Salt Flats. My race car wasn’t ready so we
continued on thru Nevada. We arrived in Reno, Nev. On Wed. the 19th of June. Shirley headed for the Casino. I
headed for the hospitality room. From Wed. noon to Sunday morning it was non-stop food, drink, breweriana, especially openers, entertainment, and conversation. I went to bed every nite very tired. 20 to 25 years ago I got to bed
at 1 to 2 in the morning, now it’s 11:00 P.M. What’s happening?
J.F.O. was, as always, well represented by 13 of our members. They were—Art Santen, Fran Biehl, Don &
Ruth Sherman, Bob & Sara Post (ABA Museum Director), Herb & Helen Haydock, Tom & Phyllis Gormally, Bill
Muma, David Gausepohl (& lady friend), Bob & Elayne Campbell (President BCCA), Vic & Jackie Kroll (Regional
ABA Director), Harry & Rosemary Horn, and last but not least, Don Williams. A very good representation and notice the involvement in our hobby of our members. I sold very good at the Saturday Public Show. Openers as well
as other misc. beer items. I purchased about 120 openers. I think something is wrong with me! My list—
A-21-9 Walters, A-29-15 Schneiders, B-14-56 Phoenix, B-14-46 Yuenglings, B-21-18 Fredericksburg, B-21-72
Ruhstallers, B-55-2 Bud Light, C-13-268 South Fork, C-15-10 Schaefer, C-10-25 Dutch Club, D-4-4 Old King, E-497 White Crown, E-6-25 Fort Schuyler, E-6-93 Fredericksburg, E-9-28 Eastside, E-9-116 Columbia, G-48-UL Widmer, G-28-20 Pittsburgh, H-6-10 Blatz, L-14-UL Bacardi Silver, O-6-2 Burgermeister, L-9-4 Carlsberg, O-5-UL
Budweiser (Script), Q-13-UL Squatters Salt Lake Brewing Co., Q-18-49 Bud Man, Q-27-15 Budweiser, G-2-6 Old
German, A-29-30 Soda Mello-Mix, Two new Coca-Cola openers, Two Japanese openers
And then about 90 other misc. openers, much too numerous to mention. Many openers for sale, but few high-dollar
ones. I also bought three very nice advertising pieces with fish & beer combination.
A.B.A. had many events scheduled. Sands Comedy Club, special bingo, trips to Great Basin Brewery for a
very , very good lunch. Shirley and I ate there 3 times! A trip to Virginia City by bus, trip to Harrah’s Auto Museum, Colorado Hospitality nite with delicious Rocky Mountain Oysters, a full bottle swap and Sat. nite dinner. No
wonder I got tired! The A.B.A. annual meeting for 2003 will be in Stevens Point, Wis. I am already looking forward
to a show in the good old Mid-West.
We continued our vacation in southern Nevada, southern Utah, northern Arizona, northern New Mexico,
northern Texas, and northern Oklahoma. Got home in time for 4th of July here at Lake of the Ozarks, Mo. Out of
money, out of clothes, and out of energy. A great 4880 mile trip that we planned for a year. America is a wonderful
place and full of great, wonderful, fine people. We did not have one bad experience. I will write again about the
N.A.B.A. show in St. Louis, Mo. At least I won’t have to drive very far. I will be rooming in with Bob Post. I don’t
believe either of our wives care to go!
J.F.O Ace Cub Reporter Ollie Hibbeler #149
P.S. Shirley didn’t do too bad at any of the many, many Casinos. She lost very little, thank goodness!, or so she says.
“30th ECBA Convention Frederick MD July 10-14”
Lets see, few openers, some nice breweriana especially local stuff, but really just a slow show. The good
news it was only a six hour trip for Pat, Corkie and myself, the weather was great, and we got to visit Ben and Cornelia Hoffman in Pa. I did get one good opener, an O-19-UL Krueger. There were some openers available but nothing
too outstanding. Nice people and the Saturday show was pretty good. Larry Moter passed on going early to a local
DC antique show and missed a M-3 Senate in nice shape for $10. Maybe next time.

“31st NABA Convention St Louis MO July 31-August 4”
This one show you need to be at early if you want to get the good early buys. Also the last few years has
seen some great open house tours on Tuesday before the convention officially starts and this year was no exception.
Four houses were open and along with my chauffeur, John Bitterman (also my roommate for the week) we went to
three of the homes and saw a lot of great St Louis area breweriana. For once at a NABA show I did not buy anything
good at all. A few odds and ends but the real opener magnet was Dave Lendy with several good “A”s and “B”s and
then capping off the week by buying a D-15 Red Feather for $165 at the Saturday show. The seller had shopped it
around (I missed out) and Dave beat out Ollie Hibbeler’s offer of $150. The biggest reason besides Dave for me not
getting much were all of the JFO members in attendance; John Bitterman, Dave Gausepohl, Fil Graf, Herb Haydock,
Ollie Hibbeler, Norm Jay, Vic Kroll, Dave Lendy, George Love, Jim Maxwell, John Mlady, Larry Moter, Ken Ostrow, Bob Post, Art Santen, and Pat Stambaugh.
The show highlight was seeing Art Santen’s collection on Friday. Dave Lendy along with Pat Stambaugh
and myself paid a visit to the “opener house”. Art even made Dorothy leave while we got the big tour. I believe Art
has about 28,000 different and probably close to 40,000 counting dupes. Two rooms upstairs and the basement full
of openers. Art has all of the displays he made for JFO Conventions still intact. He also had a pretty original way of
storing his beer openers. Art uses boxes about the size of cigarette cases and in each one he has two rows of envelopes with each envelope having a brewery name on it. The shelving unit to hold all of these was about 15 feet long
and 8 feet high. He does use cigar boxes if he has a lot of beer openers and corkscrews from one brewery. Art has
well over 5,000 different U. S. beer and corkscrews listed in the Handbook. He also tries to get as many different
breweries as he can and has over 1,100 different. The only downside was it was 101 degrees outside and Art does
not have air conditioning. Needless to say it was rather “warm” inside and Art’s official tour takes about 2 hours.
Hopefully we will have an Art Santen house tour sometime during JFO convention week next April.
It was a long hot week and I finally arrived back in Durham on Sunday at 4:00 in the afternoon. This was
my second flight since 9/11 last year and I did check in some small breweriana items that were placed inside my
large duffle bag. No problems and everything made it to St. Louis fine. Next year’s NABA Convention will be in
Minneapolis, MN. Somehow I misplaced my “Ace Cub Reporter’s” article about NABA. He didn’t have much to
say since Shirley didn’t come.
“Dave Hoffman Strikes Gold at Auction”
Dave said he was checking out the local
auction newspaper when he saw an ad
advertising openers. He emailed the
auctioneer and asked him if there were
any beer advertising openers. The auctioneer replied, “I don’t know”. Hard to
believe he would not know but Dave
decided to attend anyway and ended up
going to 3 sales for this estate. His final
tally of just beer and soda openers; 712
total, 4 “A”s, 31 “B”s, 76 “C”s, 12
“D”s, 77 “E”s, 20 “G”s, 51 “H”s, 428
“I”s & “J”s, 10 “M”s and 3 “O”s. The
“O” were best with those being an O-8
Crystal Rock, O-19 Whistle and an O18 Coca-Cola “toothed opener” in the
original box (shown right). Glad you
went Dave and thanks for sharing the
story.
Herb Haydock said that this is the World’s Largest Corkscrew,
located in Northern Wisconsin and it is not for sale. Too bad as
would fit nicely in the new Don Bull Mansion.

Spouse’s Corner
By Pat Stanley, the Editor’s Spouse
This edition will be a test if the night owl can write during the day when she's very late with her contribution. Along with writing, she is working on a long "to do" list that must be completed before we
take off to Chicago where John will attend the Monarch show and the NABA Board Meeting while Pat
will be checking out knit shops with JFO friend, Jackie Young.
The reward for my dedication this morning is this long anticipated trip. Besides fun time with Joe and
Jackie Young, we will be seeing Bob and Marge Stahly who missed JFO in April as Marge's mother was
recovering from surgery. Verne and LaVerne Vollrath picked a trip to Hawaii over seeing us!!
I've been reading over the 1991 newsletters. Another special year as we hosted the JFO Convention
here along with co-hosts Roger and Janice Jarrell. The convention announcement was really neat. I
don't know if John or I wrote it, but whoever did, did a good job: "If you draw lines from Raleigh to
Durham to Chapel Hill, North Carolina, you end up with a triangle. In the midst of that triangle a Research Park was created, Research Triangle Park (RTP). This April, within the boundaries of this hitech, research-oriented development, JFO members will journey into the past, proud of their antique
treasures, envying those in possession of others.
Openers, corkscrews and breweriana will be tested and examined as closely as anything in RTP's
labs." John probably penned that as Janice and I were running around working on our secret surprises. We were on a mission to have the best Welcome Bags ever. We picked up something at a
flea market and the man put the purchase in a bag with beer advertising. Our eyes lit up. Could we
buy some of those bags? He promised to get us some and we went back several times before he
came up with the bags, but it was worth the wait for us.
Don't remember what we put in the bags now, or for sure what beer brand was advertised, but they
were the best bags ever.
Then there were the raffle prizes. We just happen to find some cross-stitch books with beer advertising patterns. Sure...we could make prizes. We cross-stitched 4 Anheuser Busch items, 2 Budweiser
hand towels, 2 hand towels with "Just for Openers", 2 framed cross-stitched Corkscrews (pattern designed by Pat Stanley), 1 Corkscrew paper weight and 8 bookmarks. Were we crazy? Yes, no doubt
about that, but that's not all. The Medford dog was once again the Convention Opener and we just
happen to find a cross-stitch pattern for a dachshund. It was great, except we didn't like the tail, so
we were gutsy enough to ask the designer to change it and she did!! The dog had to be perfect as
these works of love would be the display prizes.
And so Janice and Pat started threading up at least 50 million shades of brown embroidery thread.
Janice finished one in a week, while Pat struggled through one head, not sure she had the right
browns in the right places. While Pat went to the eye doctor for her first bi-focals, Janice finished
Pat's dog and the third one needed for the prizes...plus two more...one for her and one for Pat to hold
dear forever. Janice hasn't cross-stitched since!!
This year we had to make some banana pudding the night before, so the Northerner could have some
cold pudding. For the Southerners and converts, we had some ready warm.
The Jarrell-Stanley team worked closely to overcome the major obstacle, the announcement that the
hotel rep who arranged our convention and was no longer there, forgot to mark out the big showroom
for us. Right...we know the weddings they had in there that Saturday were much more lucrative. So,
one evening, on the way to check out the 42nd Street Oyster Bar again (where our Convention lunch
would be), the four of us stopped to look over the small room we now had for the Saturday show.

Spouse’s Corner (continued)
Now in a problem solving situation, you are suppose to be able to throw out any idea without paying
any consequences...it's called brainstorming. Well, when my idea that we could use little round tables
was thrown out for consideration, John went into a storm. We didn't speak through the entire meal at
the oyster bar. I still think round tables are neat! We still enjoy going to 42nd Street. In fact, John's
cousin and her husband are driving a 100 miles to go with us next month.
The good news was that Verne and LaVerne were celebrating their 40th Wedding Anniversary and had
their picture taken with the newly weds who were celebrating where our show should have been.
Oh my, I must move along. John will be back from his Saturday trip to the Post Office and will be
asking about this article.
Throughout 1991, Opener Trivia continued to be a big hi-light in the newsletters. The October issues
especially caught my eye. See, I have to make copies of John's only original set of back issues, so I
can mark it up. At first I didn't make copies of all the sketches in this issue as there were five pages
of them. As I started reading about the various openers, I went back to the original and made copies
of those pages. When I read that three of the sketches were submitted by Jack Ford, I quickly
scanned the pages for those as we have some sketches Jack Ford sent us in 1995 that we framed for
a nice warm touch to John's Opener Room. I really didn't need to look for the reference numbers that
identified Jack's openers for they just jump off the pages as they are all done with a three dimensional depth to them. Bill McKienzie did wonderful sketches for JFO and I'm sure he would have
agreed and not be offended by the credit given to Jack Ford who teaches art classes in California.
In Opener Trivia, January 1999, Ollie Hibbeler and John Stanley wrote about one of Jack Ford's openers, an A-35 type opener with an Indian drawing a bow. Ollie gave some interesting information
about the opener saying that it came from Cherokee Brewery Co. from South St. in St. Louis, MO.
The brewery was located at the mouth of a very large limestone cave what was used in their operations. In the late 1930's, 40's and some of the 50's, the cave was used as an amusement arcade and
beer garden. Ollie actually has been in it.
John's notes about the A-35 were to say that it had been in two auctions, one in 1989 and another in
1986. He probably didn't even have to look this information up, he just carries it around in his head
all the time!!
There have been times when John and/or his mother have had some cigar cutters, so I found the discussion about an elaborate tack and nail puller of interest in the January issue. Its purpose was to
pull and hammer back the tacks in the lid of the old wooden cigar boxes.
That trivia corner also mentioned milk picks, tools for removing cardboard milk bottle caps. I almost
hate to admit that I remember the caps from days visiting my grandmother in Canada, but I don't
think she had a milk pick.
I have no desire to eat sardines, but there was a combination sardine can opener and bottle opener
with a spatula for removing sardines. The fish and circle design on the spatula was cut out so the oil
or sauce could pass through. The sardines still stayed too oily I'm sure.
The July Opener Trivia went into great detail about whiskey advertising. It never has gained the
popularity of breweriana, perhaps because of its limited availability (I thought openers were hard to
find, John). But whiskey has a place in American history, for you never see cowboys asking for beer.
Real men drink Jack Daniels (43%), not Coors (3.6%).

Spouse’s Corner (continued)
I was sipping some Pina Colada (12.5%) last night while paying bills (when I should have been writing
my Spouse's Corner) and had to void one check that was still not legible even after an honorable attempt to focus on the task. Now you know why you don't see me drinking at JFO.
The article explained the difference between straights and blends. Blends contain fewer impurities. I
wasn't surprised to read that Canadian Whisky (spelled like the Irish spell it) is the lightest in body or
texture and flavor of all the major whiskeys. All Canadian whiskies are blends. I've seen a lot of
those fine spirits consumed when I returned to my native country for visits.
Other notes from the October Trivia included Verne Vollraths' confession that he once passed up getting a D-15-1 as it cost too much, but LaVerne secretly bought it for him and gave it to him on his
birthday. That explains over 50 years of happiness.
I once sent Ray Brauener $50 for whatever it would buy for John one Christmas and we will celebrate
15 years in October. How much does 50 years cost, LaVerne?
John Stanley had so many openers submitted to trivia that McKienzie said that John must have been
born in the Chinese Year of the Dog...how else could anyone be so dawg-gone lucky?
Dave Cress sent in a chicken opener. I use to keep one on my office bulletin board, but I thought it
was a rooster. It was there in an attempt to convert me to a morning person. It didn't work, but I'm
trying again by starting this issue in the morning. It's now 1:30 and I'm not nearly done. John came
home, but hasn't quizzed me yet as he can see that I'm glued to my computer.
Cress also sent in an interesting combination can opener - opener from the 1964 Olympics in Toyko.
In 1964 it was $5 in American funds, in 1991 probably $75.
There were several more that I found interesting, but I better tell you about the "rest of the newsletters". You should go back and check out these issues.
Besides Opener Trivia, 1991 had some interesting Collectors of the Month (this is a quarterly newsletter, but that's ok).
Lyle Lewis was featured in January. I've heard one of his statements many times while around the
advanced collectors, "Most people don't want to sell, just trade".
Mike Cargile, who was in advertising, was highlighted in April. His wife thought that nostalgia plays
an important part in collecting. That seems like a good explanation of the addiction. When asked
what his favorite in his vast collection was, Mike said, "It's the one I haven't found it".
Roger Jarrell discussed his new hobby in the July issue. Roger had to hear about openers all the time
at work as he and John work together. Then he and Janice went to Pennsylvania (that use to be a
great place to find openers). He saw a mint N3 from a coal company at a flea market and asked how
much. That $2 was the first of many dollars spent as he was hooked.
Otto Wahl was the October collector. He had one opener I haven't seen (unless one is buried somewhere in this house). It's a horse whose buckteeth open bottles, the caps dropping into a convenient
feed bucket below. Unfortunately he is right about the durability of virtually indestructible openers
versus today's planned obsolescence...use it up and buy another.

Spouse’s Corner (continued)
This is getting long and I've only covered the Convention, Opener Trivia and the Featured Collectors.
A crossword puzzle was shown in the January issue. 14 across was "church key" with opener fitting
the space. John works puzzles every day, probably looking for that to turn up again.
Check out the January issue to see
a picture of Loyd Richards cleaning
an opener embedded in a St. Louis
extras) or how to use an opener to
how Harriet Waldo makes a trolling spoon from a beer can opener,
weeds from the cracks in his sidewalk with an opener, a picture of
Street (probably in front of Art Santen's house as he has some
a make a can that can be used to start a BBQ without lighter fluid.
Joe Paradi wrote up his summary of the 1991 JFO Convention. "Bill McKienzie, as his usual custom,
brought an enormous pile of stuff which he usually has trouble unpacking. He was continuously
hounded to get the material out so that all of the others could initiate action."
The hosts and hostesses submitted a big thank you to everyone, including Verne and LaVerne who
were once again the backbone, with some funny bone thrown in, for the annual auction.
I did it, I did it. I've drafted another Spouse's Corner and it wasn't late at night. Now I can have
some lunch. I can even have some Pina Colada if I wish!!! First let me get out my Large Print Dictionary and check a couple of words. I really wasn't trying to get out of cross-stitching those dogs in
1991.

If I missed any New Discoveries please send them in for
the January issue. I almost made the M-141 above a “Q”
type so it was added at the end. Please send any corrections by December 1st. Thank you to any members who
submitted these New Discoveries. I hope everyone has a
great Thanksgiving and Christmas.

contact the owner and hopefully for the next issue we can
say for sure if one exist. The member is one of the
original JFO collectors so maybe he was fortunate enough
to find some in the “early days”.
Personally I am getting fewer good openers on eBay but
there are still lots of good and not so good openers
available. Going through the auction results, the first
thing that stands out are two A-4 Coca-Cola openers with
the opener having the town name bringing half the
generic slogan opener. Usually it is the other way
around. With Ed Kaye selling his non-beer A-9 baseball
players and his beer dupes, several were available this
past quarter. The highlight was an A-9-34 White Eagle.
Also note that after all of the fake A-9 Coca-Cola
baseball players on eBay, someone paid a $150. It never
ceases to amaze me.
B-1s and B-2s were run of the mill this quarter as well as
most of the other “B”s. The exception being a B-11
Rainier at a good price of $76.00 and a B-44-1 Lembeck
& Betz also at a good price of $77.00.
“C”s had two big surprises in the C-13-102 Stanton (a
fairly common opener) and the C-17-37 Largay (a pretty

average condition and a really nice one will bring close to
$1000.00. The second G-4 Dr. Pepper that I have seen on
eBay brought half what the first one did. The corkscrew
collectors were all over the G-10-2 Liebig Malt at
$275.00. “H”s were pretty quiet until you get to the new
discovery H-13 Fremont. The style is just like a H-9 but
instead of a key chain hole, the Fremont has a square gas
key hole. Tim Payne thought I was staying away from
this one since he wanted it, but I dove in at $366.99 and
forced him to pay $371.99. To say he was a little upset is
putting it mildly. For being a bad editor and running up
the bid on this one, I was rewarded with one from an

“Opener and eBay Trivia”
Another M-3-43 Queen City turned up which is the sister
opener to the very common M-3 with Old German
Brewing instead of Queen City. It really appears that for
years everyone assumed they were all Old Germans and
now that folks are checking all Old German out, a Queen
City is turning up from time to time.
Knight was the cheapest one I have seen on eBay at just
under a $1000.00. Maybe the overall economy is reflected in corkscrew prices in general whereas openers
being a low end item are still doing well especially if you
are selling.
At least the 5th and 6th M-19 Coca-Cola muddlers were
offered this quarter. If they are not fakes someone has
found a small hoard. With several good Coca-Cola openers this quarter I was shocked that the highest price one
would be a fake M-19 for $266.88. Once again go figure.
A good selection of miscellaneous “M”s and “N”s with
the never ending supply of Dr. Pepper bullet pencils
never slowing down the price to reflect the relative common availability of this opener. Four Coca-Cola 50th
Anniversary openers (style N-506) and one goes through
the roof at $229.50. A lot of these buyers do not follow
eBay that closely because if they did, they would get one
of the $75-100 openers.
The painted “O”s (O-2 and O-6) have been generating a
lot of interest the past year. At one time you were lucky
to get $30 for one and now many bring in the $50-75
range. Then that little hustler from Perkiomenville
sneaks in and gets a pretty nice O-6 Esslinger for $11.00
(way to go Ben). All I can say about Starr X is to get
your yo-yo out. Prices continue to be up and down but
still mostly up. If it considered tough then get your check
book out. The Kelvinator is tough to find and brings
$331.26 and the a Roman Kola which I had not heard of Of course there are exceptions as this German corkscrew

one of those $500 results. The O-515 Coca-Cola corkscrew Starr X was way out of line at $149.99 (usually in
the $40-75 with Coca-Cola on the neck).
The “P” beer corkscrews were fairly active. I could not
tell if the Fred Miller wood handle corkscrew was a P-22
as shown or a P-8 with the bell missing. I have seen a
couple of P-8s but not a P-22. Regardless it was wildly
popular at $222.22. The third P-114 pair of Blatz legs on
the market the last six months brought a modest price of
$291.00. The amazing part is the same person (Leo

call this a bargain price. Every month more and more
JFO members join the eBay ranks. A lot of the stiffer
Corkscrews in general were fairly active this past quarter. competition for openers is coming from the “closet” colThe Tuckers just keep turning up and what was once a

“Twins” for A-9 Baseball Players
Dave Lendy received the following 2 page sales list
and 4 page catalog for the Vaughan Manufacturing Co.
from Rich La Susa (a NABA member). Dave passed
them along to me to use in the newsletter. From what I
have been told, Vaughan was in business until the mid1980s. At that time they seem to have disappeared off
of the map.
The 2 page price list is dated 1980. I just wish we
could have some of the old style openers made up at
the prices shown. The 4 page catalog is probably from
the same time period but could be as early as 1960. In
the next issue I hope to show a 1940 letter from
Vaughan to the Manhattan Brewery of Chicago.
Over the years the JFO newsletter has had many catalogs and opener ads pictured. Anytime a member has a
chance to buy old opener catalogs, please take advantage as they are hard to find and more old ones have
turned than newer catalogs. In recent years I have paid
as much for $50 for complete Vaughan catalogs.
Sometime in the future I hope to create a list of all catalogs and ads that have been in the newsletter. Thank
you Dave for sending these Vaughan’s ads in.

This opener has been in the
1996 July JFO issue before, but
Don Bull was able to get a nice
picture of it since Stan Summers,
the lucky owner, brought it to this
year’s JFO Convention. Hard to
believe but your editor never
listed it, so six years later no one
has found another one. One of
the few if not the only known
beer opener with a picture of the
brewery’s owner. Besides every
Michigan collector lined up for it,
a lot of poor old JFO members
would love to own it also. Maybe
Stan will remember me in his will.

Harley-Davidson
like Art Johnson Bought
But Art had one little problem,
someone had drilled out the spinner on his. Still a very tough
opener to find. These for some
reason seem to turn up out West.
His was only the second one I
have heard of being found on the
East Coast. The one above
brought $472 on eBay. Keep your
eyes open and be alert for this
one. Originals are made of steel
and beware as reproductions have
been done in aluminum.
