Sun City Anthem Board of Directors
President’s report
Board of Directors Election
This month, a very important annual process begins again.
Sun City Anthem Community Association, Inc., will elect four
members of our Board of Directors. These individuals will
serve two-year terms acting as fiduciaries for our community.
The Election Committee, charged with assuring that our
election process is fair, open and above suspicion, has worked
over the last year to prepare for our election season and
process. They drafted and recommended the 2015 Election
Calendar and the Election Manual to the Board for approval.
This group works with candidates and sponsors the orientation
meeting for potential candidates, and a meet-and-greet event
for the community to interact personally with those seeking
Board positions.
A position on our Board does not require any special training
or preparation. But it does require the ability and willingness to
consider different points of view and a clear understanding that
issues have a variety of elements and can be approached from
many different angles.
In the past, many individuals elected to the Board have
served on committees, been regular attendees at Board
meetings and workshops, participated in work groups or held
leadership positions in an SCA club. Those kinds of experiences
can offer meaningful preparation for Board work. They
familiarize a candidate with the system that operates to keep
our Association running smoothly. Even though there is no
requirement for this kind of experience, having participated
in some way in the governance of SCA can be a real advantage
to a candidate.
I can think of many ways to describe the job of a Sun City
Anthem director. It’s always interesting, generally enjoyable,
consistently challenging, very gratifying, time-consuming and
sometimes fun. It can add richness to your life, introduce you
to new friends and lead you to stretch your thinking on many
different topics.
Sometimes, when I explain that I find the job of a director
to be rather enjoyable, the other person frowns at me or simply
tells me I must be nuts. It seems that many assume that the
Board deals with negative issues and complaining residents all
too frequently. But I assure you, the positive aspects of serving
on the SCA Board far outweigh the negative. I hear far more
confirming comments and affirmations than I do the opposite.
I firmly believe it is the responsibility of each member of our
Association to read, listen, study and give serious consideration
to the individuals who are seeking positions on our Board. This
election is not to be taken lightly. I hope all members will be
well informed and cast their votes after studying the issues and
understanding the positions of all candidates.
During the election season, there are also many events
in private homes hosted by individuals supporting certain
candidates. If you are invited to one of these events, I urge
you to attend and learn firsthand what the candidates stand
for and make a reasoned decision about who should lead
this community.
I also hope that anyone who is willing to devote time and
effort to this community will consider running for one of the
open positions. Our Association needs volunteers to maintain
and protect our wonderful lifestyle and all the opportunities we
enjoy at SCA. Please, give some thought to being a candidate for
our Board. You won’t be sorry.

ARCHITECTURAL REVIEW___________
Gale Kalish, subcommittee chair
ARC-Committee@scacai.com
Plan reviews second and
fourth Thursdays, 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m
The Sun City Anthem Board of Directors empowers a sevenmember Architectural Review Committee to ensure any changes
to the exterior of members’ homes comply with the Design
Guidelines. Most of the ARC’s work has been delegated to a
14-member subcommittee.
The subcommittee meets twice monthly and can grant final
approval of all proposed plans except for additions and casitas,
which must be forwarded to the ARC for final approval after they
have been reviewed at the subcommittee level. The ARC approval
of proposed plans allows homeowners to have their project
completed.
It is the homeowner’s responsibility to notify the ARC of any
deviances or mistakes in their plans they may find during the
scope of the project. For example, a project could be found in
violation if a rear setback shown on a homeowner’s plan as being
11 feet was not accurately measured and was only nine feet.
Should these types of variances occur, the homeowner should
immediately halt the project and return to the ARC for further
review. If this is not done, upon final ARC onsite inspection of the
finished project to ensure compliance with the Design Guidelines,
the project may be found in violation and will be mandatorily
referred to enforcement for resolution.
The ARC review and approval process is a highly interactive
and cooperative process between the homeowner and the ARC
members. The goal is to allow the homeowner to make changes
that they desire to the exterior of the home in a manner that does
not negatively impact their neighbors and community.

A noise by any other name. Pickleball is played by striking
a hard-surfaced paddle against a hard plastic ball (think wiffle
ball). It creates a noise that is distinctively piercing, unlike that
of a tennis ball.
For the last two months, the CLC has been reviewing
complaints about noise from Pickleball play at Liberty Center.
Our involvement was encouraged by the Properties and Grounds
Committee because of a Project Item Request filed by a nearby
resident. It sought action by the Association to deal with the
problem.
We placed the matter on our next committee workshop, and
several residents shared their experience and concerns. It was
obvious that regardless of the number of affected residents,
the noise level created by rackets against balls needed to be
addressed. We promised to investigate the problem.
_At our January meeting, we received a report by CLC member
Pat Carrell about how other retirement communities have dealt
with this problem. She learned that certain manufacturers make
paddles that produce substantially less sound on impact with the
ball. One community in Phoenix had outlawed the use of certain
paddles that had elicited excessive decibel levels.
_Committee member Dave Leshefsky has been working with the
understanding and cooperation of Pickleball Club officers during
this period. The committee will continue to work with the club to
decide how to implement an equipment solution and monitor its
effectiveness.
We also heard from Facilities Director David Daniels. He
had researched the availability of sound-deadening fence
covering, manufactured and used for just this purpose. Because
the purchase and use of such a product may hold promise as a
solution, especially if combined with different equipment, the
CLC has asked P&G to handle a review of that approach.
We’ll provide a further update next month.
Shuffleboard blues. The Association has offered shuffleboard
in the Anthem Center atrium since Del Webb days. It’s been
located primarily against the lower gallery window, adjacent to
card and game play.
The equipment has always received use – sometimes,
sometimes less. Occasionally one hears debate that the amount of
play doesn’t support the space it occupies. However, shuffleboard
has a small following and is a popular family activity for out-oftown visitors.
For some time, shuffleboard players have noticed that the slide
of the pucks is erratic due to surface warping; so much so, it likely
limits the number of people interested in playing.
The Activities Department is doing two things to increase
interest. The table is being moved to a less crowded spot in the
upper gallery, and the table will be repaired and re-leveled for
optimum playing experience. It’s hoped the increased visibility
and equipment upgrade will stimulate more interest in the game.
Who knows? Maybe it will eventually become our 55th club.
Club bylaws update. The CLC thanks the Bocce Club for the
completion of its club bylaws update, which were approved at our
January meeting.
COVENANTS________________________
The Board of Directors, as required in Article 5.2 of the bylaws,
established a Deed Restriction Enforcement Committee. At Sun
City Anthem this committee is called Covenants.
The Covenants Committee is the hearing tribunal of the
Association and conducts hearings pursuant to Section 3.26 of
the bylaws and Article 7.4 of the Declaration of Covenants,
Conditions and Restrictions.
Hearings are normally scheduled once a month and they
are not open to the public or membership. A hearing is scheduled when a case cannot be resolved during the enforcement
process.
The Covenants Committee hearing tribunal reviews the
information regarding an alleged violation and determines
whether a violation of the standards set forth in the Governing
Documents occurred. This committee is also responsible for
imposing fines and/or sanctions. Following a hearing before
the Covenants Committee, the alleged violator has the right to
appeal the decision to the Board.

SCA will be hosting the next blood drive on Friday,
March 20 from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the Concord Room,
Anthem Center. November’s drive collected 52 pints. Thank you
SCA residents! More details are available from fitness monitor
Jerry “Dracula” Malone. We can’t emphasize enough the urgent
need for blood. If you can, please donate; if you can’t, please let
your friends and neighbors know about the drive.
A note about using the gym equipment. Please use the
supplied towels to wipe down the piece of equipment you have
been using, right after you are finished. That’s how we cut down
on spreading bacteria.
_A s we age, exercise becomes more and more important to our
well-being and quality of life. If you work out now, keep it up. But
if you don’t exercise on a regular basis, check with your doctor
and if he concurs, come on down to the Anthem Fitness Center.
We have so much to offer; you will make new friends and feel so
much better.
Our committee’s mission statement is to advocate and advise
on health, fitness, recreation and wellness for our community.
We are also tasked with serving as strategic partners with other
committees including Community Lifestyle and Properties
and Grounds in order to ensure that the recreational facilities,
equipment and programs throughout SCA continue to meet the
health and fitness needs of residents.
PROPERTIES AND GROUNDS________
The Health and Fitness Committee is committed to providing
you, our friends and neighbors, with the best opportunities
to stay fit, healthy and be informed about some of the current
thinking regarding health and fitness.
It’s common for projects to be proposed that enhance the
Association’s properties or common grounds. However the
proposal is initiated – whether by an Association member or a
group – the process starts with a form called a PIRF. This form is
available from the Facilities Department and may also be found
on the SCA website. Log in to www.sca-hoa.org and then select
Maintenance & Facilities from the top menu, and then click on
Project Item Request Form.
Know your meds. Many of our residents travel from time
to time, either domestically or overseas, and face the prospect of
needing medical attention while away from home. Any time this
happens you are always asked, “What medications do you take?”
Very few of us could answer this question in full, including the
strength of the drug.
If you own a smart phone there is an easy way to always know
your medications, how often you take each medication and
the dose. There is an app called Care Zone Meds that can be
downloaded from the Apple app store if you use an iPhone and
from your Android app store if you use an Android-based device.
You simply scan the pill bottle label into the application …voilà
… you will have a complete listing of every prescription and all the
information on the label. Even the technically challenged should
be able to use this app with no difficulty. Travel with your smart
phone and you have a complete listing of all of your medications.
And the application is free, gratis, at no charge.
The SCA Fitness Center has a fabulous indoor walking
track with specific lanes for the slow, intermediate or
fast walker. For those of you who are already used to walking,
the gym offers a large number of treadmills. If you do not have
experience using a treadmill, ask a monitor or an instructor for
help; you don’t want to fall off and hurt yourself. Also, always
attach the emergency cord to your shirt as an extra precaution.
Before you start any exercise program please check with your
doctor to make sure he feels you are physically able to start a
program. He can advise as the duration and intensity of the
exercise, even walking.

or montambeau@yahoo.com
Next meeting Tuesday, February 10
10:00 a.m., Arlington Room
The Facilities Department receives the form and the process
begins. Facilities will forward a copy of the form to the appropriate
committee(s). Commonly, it goes to Properties and Grounds,
Lifestyles and/or Health and Fitness. At that point, the request
is put on the committee agenda for a meeting to which the PIRF
originator is invited.
If the proposal is deemed worthy of consideration, it is then
vetted by the Facilities Department to determine feasibility and
cost, among other factors. Then a committee member is assigned
to be a liaison to the proposer to ensure that there is good
communication.
Once the needed facts are obtained, the committee votes to
determine whether the proposal has support. If it does, the
committee’s recommendation is sent to the SCA board of directors
for its consideration. If the PIRF does not have the committee’s
support, the proposer may appeal directly to the SCA BOD.
If the board approves the project, it is put on a list for
consideration for next year’s budget. If the cost is small, funding
may be available from the current budget.
_Proposals can range from painting arrows in the parking lots
to a major building modification.

The Grand Ballroom was filled with
cheer as residents and their guests bid
adieu to 2014 and welcomed 2015!
The evening was a sellout far in advance, and
ticket holders were treated to a scrumptious
dinner, music by the Vegas VIPs and all-night
dancing with an open bar.
A photographer was on hand to present
guests with a complimentary 5x7 memento of
the occasion, and tickets to events at The Smith
Center and Freedom Hall, and bottles of wine,
were raffled off throughout the evening.
A good time was had by all, and most agreed
that Activities Coordinator Debbie Evans had
lived up to the challenge she faced this year:
topping 2014’s fun-filled casino-themed New
Year’s Eve party. She did – everyone says
this was SCA’s best New Year’s Eve since the
beginning of time. But now she faces a
daunting task: what to do when 2016 rolls in?
Hang around, residents, to find out!

Community Patrol
EMERGENCY — 911
Non Emergency — 311
SCACP — 702-614-6751
It is a pleasure to be writing this article on behalf of the Sun City
Anthem Community Patrol as the newly elected chief. There are
a number of issues that I will be writing about during the coming
year. My theme for all of them will focus on living safely in Sun
City Anthem.
Ongoing relationship with the
Henderson Police Department
At the beginning of January, I held my first of planned monthly
meetings with the leadership of the west district of the Henderson
Police Department. One piece of information that will be shared
each month is a map and listing of reported police incidents in the
Sun City Anthem area.
For the month of December, there were 235 total incidents in an
area comprising Sun City Anthem and Solera. Some incidents were
in parts of other neighborhoods in close proximity to Sun City
Anthem. Of the three burglaries reported in December, two were
in Seven Hills and one was in Solera. The majority of the incidents
were for traffic stops (25), residents registering guns (10), traffic
parking (11), followup visits (13), and contacts by police on patrol
through the area (46).
The good news is that there was only one theft from a vehicle,
four reports of vandalism and two petit larcenies. What this means
is what we already know – that we have a very low rate of crime and
one of the safest communities around.
Call 911 or 311
I want to emphasize that if you observe something suspicious,
or that strikes you as not quite right, please first call 911 if an
emergency (or 311 if not an emergency). Second, we would ask that
you call and alert the Community Patrol. Please do not just call
us, or call and ask us to call 311 for you. The reason is that
26 | Sun City Anthem | February 2015
if we call for you, we will not have complete details or the ability
to answer questions. What you do and your vigilance is critical to
living safely.
Please be aware that 911 and 311 calls to the Henderson PD are
handled by the same call center. Priority is given to 911 calls. At
times, when calling 311 you may have to wait for up to five minutes
for someone to answer. Be patient, as this means that they have a
high call volume of higher priority calls.
We want you! The need for volunteers
The Community Patrol is always looking for individuals with time
on their hands. We are looking with people who have four spare
hours a week and would like a good way to meet other residents
and to develop friendships in the process.
We are always in need of residents to work the critical
8:00 p.m. to midnight shift. This is the time when we find garage
doors open that owners have forgotten to close. To be a volunteer,
you need no special skills other than giving your time. We will
provide you with all of the necessary training and provide you with
a uniform to identify you as a member of the Community Patrol.
Working with the community
I look forward to working with the community and the Patrol
this year. If you have a question or comment you would like to
make, please feel free to call the Patrol office or send an email
to scapchief@gmail.com. In future articles, I will provide more
information on what the SCACP does and does not do, and brief
you on some special services provided by Henderson Police
Department.

February 2015 | Sun City Anthem | 27
The Community Lifestyle Committee chair took a stroll
through the Anthem Center on a windy day. A cold wind
was blowing outside, warning of a biting rain to come
later. The CLC’s monthly meeting had just concluded and
as I walked past the Anthem Library, where a warm fire
artificially burned, I heard a voice say:
“But one of the things I hear about clubs is that some
are cliquish and scare people from joining.” Four women
sat in semicircle facing the fireplace; another faced them
standing with her back to the fire.
I confess I was arrested by the comment. I stopped
in the doorway.
clubs realize the need to embrace new members. They
want to grow, not shrink. I also believe they understand
the clique dynamic. They do what they can to limit a
perception of exclusion. It’s not something solely unique
to Sun City Anthem.”
“Oh, I agree,” said Linda. “This place is no different
than high school or for that matter kindergarten. Cliques
start forming early and continue regardless of age. They
exist in assisted living facilities; just ask my mother.”
Jan laughed, “I know what you mean. My mother
experienced that too.”
“That’s one of the problems, all right,” said the one
standing. “People hear that and are reluctant to join.
Or new members wonder whether they made the right
decision to sign up.”
“What I really mean,” said Marge, “is that we’ve been
talking about cliques as a negative thing. They aren’t
necessarily negative unless you let them be. In my
experience, most clubs are aware of the clique dynamic,
so they work to make it a positive, not a negative.”
“Hello!” I spoke up as I entered the room. “I hate to
intrude. But I’m afraid it’s my nature, and I have an
interest in this subject. Do all of you feel the same way
about clubs?”
Marie quickly added, “Yes. Cliques are a good thing,
to quote Martha Stewart.” Someone groaned. I wasn’t
sure who, but when I glanced at Linda, she smiled and
looked away.
“That hasn’t been my experience,” said one who
identified herself as Marie. “One of my favorite clubs
made me feel very welcome. Within the first week of
joining I received a welcoming call from an officer of the
club, who asked about my interests and made certain I
would be quickly involved in activities.”
“No seriously,” Marie continued, “the reason we moved
here was to stay active and make friends. Look at our
group. We are our own clique. We get together every
Friday morning to talk about everything and anything.
After all this time, we have grown into great friends. No,
I’d say we are best friends forever.”
Carol spoke up. “But if I understand correctly, some of
these game clubs can be hard to break into. I mean, they
already have groups formed which have been playing
together for some time. It’s probably the same with
sports clubs.”
“That’s enough with the clichés, Marie,” Linda kidded.
“I’m afraid you’ll embarrass us in front of our guest.”
“Not necessarily,” countered Jan. “I know of quite a
few clubs that work hard to include new members in play
or competition. It’s a part of their structure, whether
it involves instructing new members, finding other
members the new person can play with, or putting
them with others of the same experience level.”
I was puzzled. Who were these women? They were
so nicely attired, I worried I didn’t meet some
unknown dress code. They spoke so well, I was
afraid I might stutter.
“Uh, what factors do you think make clubs the most
successful in accepting new members?” I asked everyone.
Marge spoke up. “It’s the club leadership. I think most

A thought hit me. “Uh, you said every Friday morning?
That must be why none of you have volunteered to serve
on the Community Lifestyle Committee,” I said. “All our
monthly meetings are on Friday mornings.”
Quick glances, all. “Well, that would certainly be a
deal-breaker for us, “said Jan.
“But it’s only one Friday a month,” I tried reasoning.
“But, I see Marge’s point,” Jan said, with a smile that
seemed to apologize for ignoring me. She continued with
a neatly carved argument. “We are a clique, a good one,
and proud of it. And isn’t the reason people join clubs
is to look for friends to share the same viewpoints and
interests? Doesn’t that make clubs cliques, too? It’s just
up to the clubs’ officers to make sure cliques happen
in a good way.”
“And how could Community Lifestyle insure that?”
I asked.
After a moment of reflective hesitation, Marge said,
“Every club could have an officer, committee or member
in charge of that responsibility.”
I suddenly felt out of place, like a matador at an
ASPCA meeting. So I made my goodbyes. As I walked
out of the building, it started to rain hard.
(A true story, with some room for literary license,
submitted by CLC chair Rex Weddle.)
“Make it a rule,” suggested Carol. “Maybe all clubs
should be required to have detailed procedures to
guarantee new member involvement, doing something
right away to make them welcome.”
I mulled that over. The CLC is, after all, very good
at rule-making.
“Those are great ideas,” I agreed. “We’ll have to
work on something. But I’m sure that if one or two of
you were willing to serve on our committee, we’d solve
this thing quickly.”
A chill seemed to descend on the conversation. It wasn’t
from the wind throwing leaves against the window.
“Marie, how did you like those Christmas ornaments I
made?” said Linda, giving the conversation a quick course
correction. “Were they as nice as Carol’s decorations?”
Meet the Happy Hookers
The Happy Hookers is a crochet-and-knit group that had
its inception in 2002. Although not an SCA chartered club
and not affiliated with one, this group of ladies meets once
a month, on the third Monday afternoon, in the front lobby
of Anthem Center from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The average
number of happy and active hookers in the lobby at any
given time is 10, who sit primly with needles and yarn in
hand while busily sharing patterns and working on their
charity projects.
Over the years, the group has donated about 7,000
afghans for babies and seniors’ laps, hats and scarves and
blankets for the homeless and veterans. Beneficiaries of
the ladies’ largesse include St. Rose Hospital, Southern
Nevada Healthcare System, Project Linus, the Veterans
Administration the hospital at Nellis Air Force Base,
Salvation Army, Red Cross and Nathan Adelson Hospice.
Forty blankets were recently donated to Camp Mariposa,
for children who lost a parent or sibling during the
previous year.
If you see the women in the lobby, please stop to join
the group and lend them a hand, or just to say hello.

AMATEUR RADIO ______________________
Club membership meetings are the second Wednesday of each
month in Liberty Center. Meetings begin at 4:00 p.m. with a
scheduled ending before 6:00 p.m. We now offer classes for
members:
•
February 9, high frequency (HF) radio demonstration.
A radio, an antenna and possibly a computer with
computer interface will be set up. This will provide a few
voice contacts and possibly a few Morse Code experts will
have a conversation or two.
•
February 16, 23, March 9, 16, and 23, classes will help
those members interested in preparing for the FCC
licensing for general class. This is the second of three
license grades available, and provides significantly more
operating privileges than the entry-level technician license.
as well as former President George W. Bush. On New Year’s Day,
Maude was in the top 10 for nonfiction and history ebooks on
Amazon and number five in The Wall Street Journal.
Donna ranked 40 overall in Amazon’s top 100 authors for the
year, fifth in Kindle ebooks, and seventh in Amazon’s biographies
and memoirs. Many of her books were on top-30 lists. Donna has
17 titles listed for sale on Amazon.com, and she is busily at work
on more.
Robert Michael Wilson (R. Michael Wilson), Anthem
Authors’ prolific historian, excels in nonfiction accounts of the
American west. He was raised in California and spent 24 years
working for the Los Angeles County sheriff’s office. He holds a B.S.
degree in criminology, a Master’s degree and a Juris Doctorate.
Look for next month’s announcement of the FCC-required
license testing to be offered by the club in cooperation with the
Amateur Radio Relay League.
Membership dues are $30, payable by check to SCA Amateur
Radio Club. Write your SCA member ID number on the memo
line. For more information, email sca.ham.club+info@gmail.com.
ANTHEM AUTHORS_____________________
Who are we? (Anthem Authors are often asked if we’re
members of a book club.) The resounding answer is,
“We write books!”
Who reads our books? Is the audience limited to SCA? Is
it mostly local? To find out, meet two of our outstanding writers.
*****
Donna Mabry is a Michigan native who came to Las Vegas to
make costumes, and soon wove the stories she heard in the back
of the girls’ dressing room into a novel, the first of the “Alexandra
Merritt mysteries.” She has authored a popular series of
historical romances and stand-alone thrillers. Her lighthearted
Conversations With Skip was recently translated into Spanish.
Add to this body of work three screenplays, a stage play, poetry
and short stories.
Robert’s latest release is Stagecoach Robberies in California.
The first recorded robbery of a California stagecoach was in 1856
and the last in 1913. Over that period, there were 458 stagecoach
robberies, many with tales of intrigue and surprise.
Among his books, Robert’s personal favorites are Frontier
Justice in California and Massacre at Wickenburg. He is working
on Train Robberies in North America and has documented more
than 800 of the 1200 train robberies in Canada, Mexico and the
United States.
Robert has 25 active titles available on Amazon.com and
in bookstores. He has also published articles for Wild West
Magazine and appeared on television as an expert on specific
western events, including “True Grit, the Real Story” for Canada’s
history channel.

Now when you meet a member of Anthem Authors, you’ll
know we write books – books that appeal to readers in the
U.S, Canada and Europe. We add our talents to those of the
many residents who comprise this vibrant community of
Sun City Anthem.
Anthem Authors meets every Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. in
Anthem Center. We welcome writers of all genres and levels
of experience. Annual dues are $10.
With the recently released biography of her grandmother,
Maude, Donna’s popularity skyrocketed. The book is a slice
of real life that spans 1892 through the 1960s and includes a
poignant relocation to Detroit during the Great Depression.
In December, Maude ranked number one on Amazon.com,
beating out national newscaster and talk show host Bill O’Reilly

BILLIARDS____________________________
The Billiards Club’s purpose is to promote interest in our sport.
We’re a social organization, and encourage residents of all skill
levels to join our club.
The Billiards Room in Independence Center is open to all
residents. If you have never played pool, you’ll discover it’s a
lot of fun. The club runs individual or doubles tournaments
each weekday at 1:00 p.m. New members are evaluated before
competitive play and assigned to a flight with players of similar
ability. We also have a Tuesday evening 8-ball league and a
Wednesday morning 9-ball league for competitive team play.
For those who simply want to play to improve their game, have
fun and meet new people, there is a social flight. In addition, we
can arrange lessons if you are a beginner or a player who just
needs some help with your skills.
For more information or to join, call club president Bill Hoover
at 702-577-3577; vice president Howard Richards at 702-2630795; or secretary/treasurer Dzintra Landers at 702-492-6778.
More information is on our website, www.scapool.org.
BOCCE___________________________________
Our fall tournament was a great success. Drinks, donuts and
pizza for all. Tournament winners were Team Absolute – captain
Vince Bertolone, Pat Shipley, Debbie Rao and Vinnie Pizzolo (left
to right in the photo). They won five straight games defeating
some very tough opponents.
BOOK_______________________________
The Book Club meets on the third Thursday
of the month from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. in
the Morris/Nelson Room at Independence
Center to discuss a book that members
have read. On February 19 we will discuss
Under the Wide and Starry Sky by Nancy
Horan. This is the improbable love story of
Scottish writer Robert Louis Stevenson and
Fanny, his tempestuous American wife.
At the age of 35, Fanny Van de Grift
Osbourne left her philandering husband in San Francisco to
set sail for Belgium, with her three children and nanny in tow,
to study art. This adventurous woman was determined to start
over, to make a better life for all of them and to pursue her own
desires.
Not long after her arrival, however, tragedy strikes, and Fanny
and her children repair to a quiet artists’ colony in France where
she can recuperate. Emerging from a deep sorrow, she meets
Robert Louis Stevenson, 10 years her junior, who falls instantly
in love with the earthy, independent and opinionated “belle
Americaine.”
Fanny does not immediately take to the slender young lawyer
who longs to devote his life to writing, and who would eventually
pen such classics as Treasure Island and The Strange Case of
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. In time, though, she succumbs to his
charms and the two begin a fierce love affair that is marked by
intense joy and harrowing darkness, and that spans the decades
and the globe.
The shared life of these two strong-willed individuals unfolds
into an adventure as impassioned and unpredictable as any of
Stevenson’s own unforgettable tales.
Book Club members volunteer at the SCA library at
Independence Center, where books are available to all members
on the honor system. The library’s collection includes fiction
and nonfiction, hardcover and paperback books. Book donations
are welcome but due to space constraints, only books published
within the past 10 years are accepted. If you have a large
donation, Paseo Verde Library will accept it and you can take a
tax writeoff for your gift.
Second place was Mellow Fellow – Al, Arlene, Ken and Gene.
If you wish to sign up, call our new club coordinator, Dave
Robar, at 206-963-4821 or email him at scabocce@gmail.com.
Pickup games continue. Join us on the courts Mondays at 7:00
p.m. and Saturdays at 10:00 a.m. Any SCA resident can play; you
do not need to be a Bocce Club member and there is no fee.
Impromptu teams are formed and play is not competitive. It’s a
great time to learn or to practice, as members will be on hand to
welcome you and to help you get started. If perchance you have a
set of bocce balls, be sure to bring them.
If you wish to practice bocce on your own, you may check out
a set of bocce balls at Independence Center by leaving your SCA
card as collateral. Visit www.scabocceclub.com for up-to-date
news about our club, or contact club president Tom Topolski at
topolski@aol.com for more information. We hope you join us soon.

BOWLING___________________________
The Bowling Club serves as an organization to promote bowling
for SCA residents who meet the club’s bylaws. The club itself
has no dues, and holds one annual meeting in October to elect
officers and to review any club issues. John Norton is the club
president and may be reached at 702-837-6614 or john.norton@
urangatang.com. The vice president is Don Krivec, and the
secretary/treasurer is Lynne Degnan, 702-420-4764.
Bowling Club members have a Thursday Sin City
Seniors Bowling League at the South Point Bowling
Center at 10:00 a.m. with four-person mixed-gender
teams. This is a closed league and is open only to SCA residents
age 55 or over. Each league member pays an annual USBC
sanction fee plus a weekly bowling fee.
League officers are Ken Hershfield, president; Don Krivec,
Clubs
vice president; and Carol Pontillo, secretary/treasurer. The
2014-2015 fall/winter season began on September 4. For
information regarding this league and/or to sign up for this
league, contact Carol at 702-778-8115 or Ken at 702-914-2322.
League officers develop the team listings and schedule. The
secretary also maintains a list of individuals who wish to bowl.
Vacancies due to illness, moving, or injury occur year-‘round. Be
sure to contact Carol to fill these openings or get on the wait list.
A second league, the Anthem Rollers, is a 10:00 a.m.
Monday league with three-person mixed-gender teams
which began bowling on September 8. Officers for the 2014-2015
fall/winter season are Artie Jones, president; Bill Entienne, vice
president; and secretary/treasurer Bob LaMorte. This is not an
SCA Bowling Club member league. If you are interested in this
league contact Bob at 702-837-6223 or rlamor@aol.com; or the
South Point bowling desk (Roe Reynolds, 702-797-8080 ext.
77173 or reynoldsr@southpointcasino.com).
BUNCO______________________________
The Bunco Club meets Mondays, 6:30 p.m., in the Liberty
Center Multi-Purpose Rooms. Make sure to bring your SCA
membership card.
Bunco is a social dice game involving 100 percent luck and no
skill (there are no decisions to be made), scoring and a simple
set of rules. If your Monday night routine could use a change,
why not join us for a fun game of Bunco? If you can throw dice
and count, you can join our club and enjoy this easy-to-learn and
fast-paced game.
The Ceramics Room
in Anthem Center is
open to members every
day except Wednesday
mornings. Monitors are
available 9:00 a.m. to noon on
Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays
and Saturdays; and 1:00 p.m.
to 4:00 p.m. on Mondays,
Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Stop by and take a tour of
our space, and stay to enjoy
the good fellowship and creativity of our members. Prepare
to be inspired. We welcome new members and offer formal
orientation. Contact club president Bernadette O’Neill at
bmburke99@yahoo.com or 702-492-9220 for more information.
CHICAGO___________________________
The newly-chartered Chicago Club holds events of interest to
people from the Chicago area, those who have significant others
from the Chicago area, those who appreciate the Chicago area,
and anyone who just wants to have fun with a friendly group of
people. Activities are primarily designed around Chicago themes.
Membership growth has been dramatic for this newly chartered
club, with 100 members at the end of 2014.
You’ll meet new friends, maybe catch up with some old friends,

CERAMICS__________________________
If you’ve never had the experience of creating a clay masterpiece
but would like to, this is the club for you. We paint, glaze and fire
pieces that are already molded, although some of us start from
scratch with just a block of clay. Ceramics is the perfect way to
create special pieces for gifts, or to decorate your home and yard
with your own creations. Celebrate Valentine’s Day, Chinese New
Year or both this month by creating a special project in ceramics.
_Our holiday party at Buckman’s was a huge success. Sixty-two
people attended, the food was great, there were door prizes, and
wonderful entertainment was provided by the SCA Performing
Arts Club. A meet-and-greet for new members was held in late
January.
Future activities will include a visit to the Mob Museum in
February to commemorate the anniversary of the St. Valentine’s
Day Massacre; a Chicago Cubs spring-training game at Cashman
Field on March 14; a Chicago-memorabilia night in April;
a barbeque in May; a bingo night in June; our annual virtual
day at Arlington Park, the Chicago racetrack, in August; and
additional activities to be scheduled relating to the history,

CURRENT EVENTS___________________
Another year has passed, and we will face new challenges and
issues during the coming year. Would you like a place to vent?
Then join the Current Events/History Club where you can have
your say in a controlled environment. Our club gives you a
platform from which to express your ideas on almost anything.
We are an information-and-entertainment club. Members
(118) pick the topics to be discussed – which run the gamut from
SCA happenings, to local and regional events, to national and
international issues – on the day of the meeting. Political and
apolitical. Speakers are given three minutes to present their
points of view so others can’t filibuster the topic. Topics are
limited to 30 minutes so as not to becoming boring. On average,
between 35 and 45 club members attend each meeting.
Members represent all points of view from the very liberal
to the very conservative and everything in between. Civility is
encouraged, controversy is guaranteed. You may participate in
any discussion or just sit and take it in.
The club meets every Monday from 10:00 a.m. until noon, and
Thursdays from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Most meetings are in
the Bristol Room. Annual dues are $10. Prospective members
may attend up to three meetings free of charge prior to joining.
_Contact Bob Freedman at 702-943-0753 or rfreedman1942@
gmail.com for more information, or just take a chance and stop in
at any meeting. You will be made to feel welcome.
DEMOCRATS________________________
The SCA Democrats continue to
address the critical issues of the
day, especially those impacting
seniors and their families. Our
purpose is to educate, inform,
excite and recruit those of you committed to making a difference
as we prepare for the 2016 elections.
We meet on the second Wednesday of each month, starting at
6:30 p.m. Our next meeting will be February 11. We invite you
to join us in Independence Center’s Morris/Nelson Room to
register and socialize while enjoying refreshments. Our featured
presentation begins at 7:00 p.m. and we adjourn at 8:30 p.m.
Club business is addressed following the program.
February 11’s guest speaker will be Sondra Cosgrove, a 28-year
Las Vegas resident. She received a PhD from the University of
Nevada, Las Vegas, specializing in the U.S. west, Native American
history, and Latin America. Currently, she is a full-time history
professor at the College of Southern Nevada and is actively
involved in college and community service.
Sondra is also president of the nonpartisan League of Women
Voters in Las Vegas. She will speak with us about voter registration
and voter ID laws, and provide an overview of the legislative
session. She advocates for important League legislative priorities
– education, good governance, sustainable living, and the
protection of all civil rights are foundational issues that form the
basis of League activities. Plan to join us for a very informative
meeting.
On January 14 we held our first SCA Dems “open-mic night”
to develop a strategic plan for the next election cycle and to
decide what we need to focus on in 2015 as we gear up for 2016.
We discussed many issues, including how to be an effective and
passionate grassroots organization, and how to develop teams to
address issues of concerns to our members.
What is your talent, your knowledge, your ability, your passion,
your cause, your need to act? Plan to attend our next meeting and
learn how you can use your talents and get involved. We are also
seeking volunteers for training for the next presidential caucus.
For more information on SCA Democrats, email
SCAdemocrats@gmail.com.

ENTERTAINMENT___________________
SCA Entertainment Club meetings are the
first Monday of the month at 1:00 p.m.
in Liberty Center. The next meetings are
February 2 and March 2. Meetings are open
to all residents.
The year started off with a fundraiser
supporting Life Long Dreams charity, a local
performance and visual arts non-profit in Las Vegas that helps
people with disabilities learn how to express themselves and
their dreams through arts. Photos from the event have been
posted on the club website, www.scaec.org.
Following a buffet-style dinner catered by Glazier’s and
desserts by The Sugar Jar, all in attendance enjoyed outstanding
performances by host Mark O’Toole, Genevieve Dew, Mark
Geovie and Geechie Guy. A live band backed the performances
and the evening was topped off by dancing for those who wished
to trip the light fantastic.
A special thanks to resident Elaine Schwartz for taking the
prize donations and making beautiful baskets that showcased
the raffle donations from Anthem residents and local businesses.
A list of business donors is also on the website and we hope our
membership will thank them for their generosity by using their
services.
Membership forms may be downloaded from the website. The
club expects that 2015’s new members will surpass last year’s
total and reach the 430 mark. Membership is $10 a year.
At the February meeting, themes for upcoming events will be
discussed. Members have asked for a Broadway-themed show, a
magic show and a game show. Rich Natole has volunteered to do
the game show for us.
The board encourages all members to share the names of
professional performers they have seen at various venues so that
our Entertainment chair can contact them and see if they are
available for a performance at Sun City Anthem. We look forward
to bringing music and laughter to our residents.

year, when she brought in all kinds of seeds and seedlings to
share. She will discuss starting seeds and herb gardening.

GOLF________________________________
MEN’S GOLF
Newly elected president, Bill Freitag, introduced himself to the
club membership of about 400 by issuing a message stating his
goals and objectives. Part of the message is reprinted here.
Dear Members,
Many of you know me, but many more don’t. So a little about
me. I’m one of the original 25 members of our club. I have seen
this club grow and have been very proud to be part of it. I want
to see the club continue to grow and the only way I believe that
can happen is to get as broad a base of members’ participation as
possible.
_I have had many members come up and thank me for stepping
up. Well, I appreciate all the support but now it is time for all of us
to do our parts to help the club thrive.
We have a number of events coming up this year and we need
committees to work on them. The three main ones are the Ryder
Cup vs. Sienna, home-and-home against Summerlin, and the
member/guest. We need volunteers to chair each of these events,
and also members to serve on the committees.
_The reality is that if members are not willing to work on these
events, we will have to discontinue them. The membership needs
to step up.
_Please contact me ASAP if you can pitch in to chair one of these
events or to serve on a committee.
One other thing … I am more than willing to hear about
problems or complaints that members may have, but I ask two
things: discuss the problem or complaint at a general membership
meeting so others are aware of the problem, and suggest a possible
solution. I do not mean that you have to be personally ready to
correct the issue, but your suggestion should be at least a starting
point to resolving it.
I am always ready to listen and talk with anyone who thinks
they may have an idea that can make our Men’s Golf Club better
for all of us. Our February 11 general membership meeting is at
the Revere Golf Club at 1:30 p.m.

As of the end of December, Alan Butki and Ingrid Spranger
have been added to the roster of the Century Club, meaning
they have hiked at least 100 miles on SCA Hiking Club local
hikes since January 1, 2014. Overall, 34 people made it into the

hike. The aggregate total for the club was a whopping 11,121.5
miles – almost halfway around the world!
Zion National Park, November 1-3
Steve Zorick had been planning an away trip to Zion since
February, and a huge number of people had signed up for it.
However, Mother Nature was uncooperative and predictions for
the weekend were for cold and rain. But that didn’t stop a hardy
group of more than 50 hikers from showing up in Springdale,
Utah for the trip. Those hikers were rewarded with a wonderful
long weekend of hiking in one of the most beautiful areas in the
country.
On the first day of the trip, a group hiked to Hidden Canyon
and encountered a big horn sheep sauntering down the stone
stairs that they were hiking up. The rule is that big horn sheep
have the right of way!
On the second day, an intrepid group led by Steve hiked up
past Angel’s Landing to the West Rim Trail. They started out
West Rim Trail

in rain, but it cleared up and they had a great time hiking on an extremely beautiful
trail. As well as panoramic views of the Zion Canyon, they were treated to magnificent
displays of fall colors. On the return trip, they attempted to climb up to Angel’s
Landing, but a light rain started along with hail. The chains were wet and icy, and the
rocks were very slippery, so they decided the wisest course of action was to turn back.
A second group had decided to climb Angel’s Landing that day, and they got fairly
near the top before the rain started. They too decided that turning back was a prudent
move.
Other groups hiked to River Walk and Emerald Pools and thoroughly enjoyed the
wonderful scenery on those hikes. Joan Moore, who keeps busy as president of the
Singles Club when she’s not hiking, is seen here on River Walk.
On the final day, nine people returned to Angel’s Landing to try again on a sunny
day. This time, the chains were dry and the rocks were less slippery, so all made it to
the top. They enjoyed the spectacular views of the canyon from this famous spot.
Jo Pooton, one of the nine people who made it to the top of Angel’s Landing, was
also one of the eight who climbed Mt. Charleston for the first time on June 30, 2013.
Another group, led by Barb and Don Davisson, went to the Overlook, which is a
trail near the entrance to the Tunnel. The biggest difficulty at Zion is deciding which
trail is the most beautiful. No matter where you go, you see simply stunning scenery.
And the Monday of our trip was a beautiful sunny day, although still a bit cool.
River Walk
In the evenings, we had our usual happy hours to snack, drink, discuss the day’s
events and plan the following day. We also fanned out to enjoy the many restaurants
in Springdale for dinner.
Although Mother Nature was not our friend on this trip, we still managed to have a
wonderful time, and we would like to thank Steve Zorick for organizing this trip.

MAH JONGG_______________________
Mah Jongg thought of the month …
“A day without Mah Jongg wouldn’t
kill me, but why take the chance?”
The Mah Jongg Club continues to promote
the social and competitive aspects of this
enjoyable and popular game. We have three
reserved play times – Tuesdays and Wednesdays from noon to
4:00 p.m., and Thursdays from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. in the
Morris/Nelson Room in Independence Center. On Tuesdays, we
meet in the Morris/Nelson and Penn Rooms to accommodate
our ever-increasing membership. The club plays both American
(western) and Asian mah jongg and tournaments and socials are
held frequently.
To participate in a club event, you must be a club member. New
members are welcome to join at any time; annual dues are $7.
Contact Nancy Lebish, membership coordinator, at 702-614-8694
or owlster@cox.net for more information.
Our next event is our Paid Membership Social on Tuesday,
February 10 from noon to 4:00 p.m. in the Morris/Nelson Room.
Join us to welcome new and returning members. Come alone or
bring your American or Asian game. We’ll have door prizes, raffles
and light snacks. Contact Helene Laefer at helene@laefer.com to
reserve your spot.
52 | Sun City Anthem | February 2015
Do you want to brush up on your mah jongg skills or learn how
to play the American or Asian versions of this addictive game? Our
instructors are available on Thursdays at 10:00 a.m. in Liberty
Center.
If you need to purchase an American mah jongg card, they are
available online at www.nationalmahjonggleague.org, or call 212246-3052. We also have Asian Fan payout cards available for sale
to members for $1 and non-members for $2. For lessons or cards,
contact Elaine Galant at 702-444-2528 or elainegalant@gmail.
com for more information.
If you are not part of a regular group, there are lists available and new
groups are always forming. Check the bulletin board in the Morris/
Nelson Room and make sure you are on our email list to receive
Elaine’s “A Little Bit of Gossip from the Mah Jongg Club” newsletter.
PADDLE TENNIS_____________________
The Paddle Tennis Club invites you to visit our
courts at Liberty Center and check out this
easy-to-learn sport. Come dressed to play and
one of our members will be happy to hit some
balls with you and review the game rules. You
should be up to speed in just a few minutes,
especially if you have previously played tennis,
pickleball or another racquet sport.
Paddle tennis is basically half-court tennis with the same scoring
and rules, but only half of the running and no strenuous overhead
serves. If you don’t like to run after tennis balls, this game is for
you. We use a fiberglass paddle and low-energy tennis balls. The
club has balls and racquets available for check-out at the Liberty
Center reception desk, so you do not need to buy any equipment
to play. However, to avoid injury, please wear non-marking court
shoes and stay hydrated during the warm weather.
You can play at any time. However, the club has scheduled
drop-in play that varies by season; check the Liberty Center court
bulletin boards for the current schedule.
Our club is all about getting your exercise and having fun playing
and mingling with fellow members. Dues are $5 per year and
membership forms are available courtside. See you on the courts.
PAN_________________________________
Mark your calendars for our big Pan Tournament in March.
More info will follow once the committee meets. This has been
a great event in the past and we look forward to lots of members
participating. If you are not a member of our club, we’d love to
have you join our fun group.
Our club promotes social and competitive aspects of this
enjoyable game. It’s a rummy-based game with some extra twists
and turns. As a member, you can drop in and play as often or as
little as you like since we have several sessions available to make
it convenient for your schedule. The game does not require a
partner or a specific number to play; just show up.
Weekly Pan sessions are Mondays and Saturdays from
12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., and Wednesdays from 6:30 p.m. to
9:30 p.m. We’re located in the lower gallery of Anthem Center.
Please arrive 10 minutes early for table assignments. We look
forward to seeing you at our sessions.
You don’t need to know how to play; we will teach you at no
cost. For information on lessons, contact Frank Eckenrod at
702-570-7567. If you have any questions about the game,
send an email Carol Franklin, communications chair at

PARTY BRIDGE______________________
The Party Bridge Club had a joyful holiday season. Club
members celebrated with dinner at Buckman’s. The members
thanked outgoing president Gerda Hager, vice president Bernie
Matusow and treasurer Penny Tourangeau for their work.
We also extended special gratitude to member Jim Green for
presenting a series of lessons for new bridge players.
New club officers are president
Shirley LaChance (photo), vice
president Kathy Stelling and
treasurer Lori Eastman.
Our club provides a welcoming
environment for a relaxed social
game of cards. If you play now, or
have played in the past and feel a
bit rusty, don’t worry; join us. If
you have never played, contact
Shirley LaChance at 702-8379924 to be wait-listed for a new
beginners’ class. Bridge is played
at the Emerson Franklin Room
from 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.
Members usually arrive a half-hour early, at about 12:30 p.m.
PERFORMING ARTS_________________
We have kicked off the new year with a bang. The first event on
January 24 was a fun-filled afternoon of Readers Theatre’s version
of “C’mon Get Happy” with many of our long-time and newer PAC
members giving us a different way of presenting the written word.
If you haven’t been to one of our performances, this is definitely
something you should put on your to-do list.
For those of you who are looking to perform but fearful of
memorization, this is the perfect opportunity for you to join our
group. Ron Seifer, the representative for Readers Theatre, is a
wonderful director and would be happy to chat with you about
joining. His email is MARRONY@cox.net.
That same evening at Buckman’s Grille, many members of
our club celebrated the new year of shows and the successful
productions they have put on in the past. This festive gala was
coordinated by Arline and Paul Thornquist. Hats off to this
wonderful couple and their assistants. Dinner was scrumptious;
the view was breathtaking as the lights from the Strip twinkled
behind us. Entertainment was provided by several veterans of past
PAC shows and our dance groups got in on the act. Needless to say,
we know how to party.
54 | Sun City Anthem | February 2015
At our November 2014 meeting, we honored Mary and Karl
Bruner as the recipients of the annual Barry Friedman Award.
Barry was a club founder and the award in his memory is given
to the person(s) who has contributed selflessly to promote and
enhance the betterment of the Performing Arts Club. Mary and
Karl over the years have truly been a perfect example of what this
club is all about.
Coming up on March 13 and 14 will be another musically filled
performance by our Choraliers Group under the expert direction of
Dick Field. This show is titled “A Musical Mosaic and Americana”
which will feature many of your favorite classic tunes from various
Broadway shows. Tickets are on sale now; visit the Anthem
Center front desk or go online (www.sca-hoa.org). Tickets are also
available at the Performing Arts Club website at www.scapac.org.
There are many Shared Interest Groups (SIGs) within our club. If
you are looking for something new to fill your time, please consider
one of our many dance groups. The clowns who perform in our
shows and reach out to the community – whether to a hospital or
senior center – are always looking for new talent. If performing
isn’t for you, then there is a vital need for assistance behind the
scenes with our talented tech crews. Oh, and don’t forget karaoke
is twice a month in Freedom Hall.
If you would like to contact or join one or more of these SIGs,
contact club president Harriet Wise at 702-492-9451 or at
imwise748@aol.com. See you ‘round the theatre!
PET_________________________________
The Pet Club had a fantastic holiday party in December. Jill
Curtis Webber and Todd Webber enthralled the members by
explaining what the Shiloh Horse Rescue does to save horses. The
late Tony Curtis and Jill started the rescue and residuals from his
movies help to support the operation. The Webbers were excellent
speakers and the members really enjoyed their visit.
Santa arrived and assisted with the gift exchange. The weather
was inclement, so unfortunately no photos of our animals with
Santa were possible.
Vic’s catered a buffet brunch and the food was great. The folks
in the Activities office did a wonderful job setting up the room
with little notice. Thank you very much.
The February meeting will have Hearts Alive Village explain to
us what they do to help animals in our community. The Pet Club
hotline for lost and found animals is 702-638-5757. The Pet Club
email is SCAPetClub@cox.net.
Pet of the month: Watson Flanigan
Watson is the proud pup of
Caroline and George Flanigan.
He is a spaniel mix with lots of
energy, and was adopted from My
Furry Valentine last year. Watson
has attended Fun with Obedience
and the Trick Click training
classes from Michael’s Angel Paws
sponsored by the Pet Club. Watson
had a few previous homes that did
not work out since he was very
protective of the family members.
He fits perfectly in his new home
and the Flanigans love him.

game. Club dues are only $5 per year and
payable upon joining. You do not need to
know how to play. Join our club and we
will teach you, at no extra cost.
We offer many different poker games
to meet a variety of interests. If you
would like to learn any of the games we play or learn more
about the club, contact club president Joel Kleinman at
JOELKLEINMAN4@gmail.com.
We play three times a week: Tuesdays from noon to 4:00 p.m.,
Thursdays from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., and Saturdays from
10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.. Choose any or all of the sessions that
fit your schedule.
We also have our weekly sit-and-go Texas hold ’em tournaments
on Thursdays from 6:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. and Saturdays
from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.
The Poker Club meets in the lower gallery of Anthem Center.
We look forward to seeing you soon.
Joining Vince as officers on the seven-person board are vice
president Irwin Binimow, secretary Lisa Carter and treasurer Bob
Wendling. At-large members are Jane Gerhart, Clay Joiner and
Buddy Pyle. It is expected that Jane will be responsible for social
activities and Clay for player development. Buddy is being seen as
tournament director.
Vince says the Pickleball Club continues to grow very fast.
Now at 236 members, he sees the club going over the 300-mark
this year. “We’re going full-steam ahead to get more courts”, he
says. “We need at least eight more, but of course we’ll take what
we can get.”
Ask him what’s making the club so popular and he’ll tell you it’s
because pickleball can be played at all skill levels. “We have rank
beginners and tournament champions,” he says. “Anyone can
play pickleball. You’ll see people play who have had back surgery,

PORCELAIN_________________________
Our club meets on Wednesdays from 9:30 a.m. to noon in the
Porcelain and Ceramics Room at Anthem Center. Experienced
members are available to share their expertise in painting on
porcelain. Explore or expand your creativity in painting
on porcelain.
To increase the range and number of items completed and
start painting immediately, club members paint on white glazed
porcelain items available from local stores or mail order. The
yearly membership is $5 and to keep your costs low, the club
provides the paints needed as well as some other required
supplies.
For information about the Porcelain Club, please call Carol

during club hours.
REPUBLICAN________________________
The Republican Club of Sun City Anthem
(RCSCA) will meet at 10:00 a.m. on
Saturday, February 14, at Independence
Center. Our speaker on that date will be
City of Las Vegas Councilman and Mayor
Pro-tem Stavros Anthony, who will bring
us up to speed on the current happenings
within the Las Vegas City Hall.
2015 has brought change to our RV Club, too. Some new officers
are on the dais and we want to introduce them. We also want
to acknowledge the outgoing crew with special thanks to Fred
Arnow, who has been at the helm of the club for the past two
years. Fabulous job, Fred!
Some topics will include the recently
approved $200 million soccer stadium,
downtown redevelopment, upcoming
municipal elections, the State of the City
address, 2015 budget and future needs and
challenges for the city. We hope you can
join us for this very interesting program.
At our January meeting, club membership approved the 2015
RCSCA college scholarship for $1,500, awarded to Dallin Black,
a senior at UNLV majoring in political science and president on
the UNLV College Republicans. Dallin plans to seek an advanced
degree in political science, perhaps becoming that rarest of
individuals – a conservative college professor. He graduated
from El Dorado High School in Las Vegas.
The Henderson municipal elections for Wards I, II and IV will
take place this year. Sun City Anthem is in Ward II. All council
members are elected at-large on a non-partisan basis. The
primary election is on April 7. If a candidate receives more than
50 percent of the vote, the candidate is declared elected, so the
primary is very important. The general election on June 2 will
be a runoff for those wards where no candidate received more
than half of the vote. Consult the RCSCA website for ongoing
information on these elections.
The purposes of the RCSCA are to promote the principles
and core values of the Republican Party through education
programs, publicity and forums for discussion and debate;
to encourage such civic duties as voter-registration drives,
candidate forums and constituent services workshops; and to
identify, promote and support Republican candidates for office.
The 2015 board officers are president Don Manning, vice
president Virginia Bear-Finnegan, treasurer Karl Johnson, and
secretary Kay Dwyer. Past president is Fred Arnow.
At-large board members are Suzanne Arnona, Mary Bruner,
Linda Buckardt, D.C. Collins, Bob Goldfried Larry Minnick,
Les Norman, Jeff Palmer and Favil West.
Who’s who in the new regime? As of January, club president is
John Strasner, shown here with his wife Emma. Vice president
is Donna Dickey, secretary is Barb Thompson, and treasurer
is Joanie Prince. It looks like the women have outnumbered
the men this year but not to worry, John. The old standbys like
wagon master Roy Prince and club photographer Jack Silas have
your back.
The new year finds us zigzagging the country with our friends,
enjoying adventures and fun rallies.
If you want more information about the RV Club or our 2015
rallies, join us at one of our meetings. We meet at 4:00 p.m.
on the last Tuesday of the month in the Independence Center
Penn Room with the exceptions of June, July and December.
Drop by to say hello and then join us for dinner at a local restaurant.
For details about club membership, call Steve Thompson at
702-896-0711.
Check www.sca-rv-club.com for more information about our
club’s schedule. Until next time, this is Dianne Hahn for the
RV Club. See you on the road.
Contact Don Manning at don.manning@cox.net or
702-453-1492, or Kay Dwyer at kaycd@cox.net or 702-733-0401,
for more information. You can also visit www.thercsca.org.
RV___________________________________
Have you acclimated yourself to the new year yet? Sometimes
change takes a minute or two to get used to. How many times
have you mistakenly written 2014 instead of 2015? Never mind.
My brain goes on pause occasionally and I forget what year it is
and what month we’re in ... especially when I’m writing checks.
I guess it’s the accumulation of all that stored data in the gray
matter after all these years. Squeezing in just one more tiny bit of
information gets iffy. Thank goodness my cell phone knows the
time and the date. If only I could get it to remember names, places
and things.

SCRABBLE_________________________
Have you played the game Scrabble? If not, would you like to
learn how to play? Our club meets Friday afternoons in the
Emerson/Franklin Room in Anthem Center, from 1:00 p.m. to
5:00 p.m. We have been around for 13 years now, and we’re still

Congratulations to winners Lori Eastman, Mary McManus,
Susan Charon, Barbara Kawell, and Rosemary Renois.
SEWING AND QUILTING_____________
Come by and start on that project you have been putting off for

projects.
The Sewing and Quilting Club is excited to announce the second
biennial Quilt Show on Saturday, April 25 in the Delaware Room
from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Eighty quilts made by club members
will be featured.
_ ll SCA residents are invited to attend. The quilts range in size

in our club interest groups. We welcome new members, and now
is a great time to join so you can participate in a full year of fun
activities and friendships. For only $20 dues, you are welcome to
a full year of classes, training, workshops and activities as well as
open sewing.

We are lucky to have Ira Ellis, a professional photographer,
in our club. He takes great group photos of us every year and
December was no exception. Thank you Ira.
Also, our special interest groups are open to all club members.
These include the Loose Threads (quilting), the Stitching Divas
(machine embroidery) and the Featherweight Group (for members
who own or want to learn more about these small, collectable
sewing machines).
We welcome newcomers. Please visit www.scasaq.org to learn
more about us, or pick up a club brochure outside the Sewing
Room, or stop in and speak with one of our club monitors. You’ll
get information on the club, classes and upcoming events. We
guarantee that you will be pleasantly surprised by all we have to
offer.
We look forward to meeting you and sharing our friendly
atmosphere and love of sewing.

Clubs
SINGLES_____________________________
If you are a single resident of our community and would like to
meet other single members, plan to join us for TTime on the first
and third Fridays from 5:00 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. Order a drink
of your choice and mingle with us, and you’ll find out all about
our club.
TTimes are usually at Buckman’s, but sometimes they are
at Café V. Our monthly calendar will show the location. We
dine afterwards at a nearby restaurant. Sign up for the dinner
at TTime.
At our TTimes, greeters will make you feel welcome and tell
you about our exciting get-togethers. You’ll be able to sign up to
become a member – dues are $10 per year. Eileen Shepardson
will have a signup sheet at TTime if you wish to join our club, or
call her at 702-269-8151. If you need information about upcoming
activities, visit our new website at http://scasingles.com, where
you will find our monthly calendar and upcoming events, or call
our president, Joan Moore, at 702-476-9167.
Our members are an active bunch. We meet for breakfast on
Wednesdays, and lunch on Mondays. We have many cooking
clubs that meet once a month for dinner at a host’s home; guests
bring food that conforms to the host’s theme or menu. We
occasionally have soirees, which are potluck dinners, on Sunday
from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A member volunteers his/her home,
all members are invited, and guests are asked to bring a dish and
beverage of their choice. Call Eileen Shepardson at 702-269-8151
if you need more information about these soirees.
As a Singles Club member, you can pick and choose club events
and be as active and social as you like. We get together to play
games, go bowling and to the movies, take bus trips to shows on
the Strip and The Smith Center. If you like to dance or just listen
to a great band, join us on Wednesdays at South Point from 6:00
p.m. to 9:00 p.m. where Déjà Vu plays. Admission is $5, which
includes a drink and $5 free play with your Player’s Card. We sit
together and enjoy each other’s company.
On February 17, we are going to the District for a painting-andwine afternoon. From 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Pinot Palette,
which is located next to the Elephant Bar, we will have a fun
event. Cost is $25; wine is a separate cost. Sign up at TTime.
_Board meetings are held on the first Monday of each month
at 5:00 p.m. in the Concord Room. Call Joan Moore at 702-4769167 for more information. We look forward to meeting you and
having you join this fun, active club.
On March 13, we will go to the Venetian to see Human Nature.
Tickets are $91.85, which include gratuity and tax. Look for
details on our monthly calendar or ask at TTime.
SOFTBALL___________________________
_The photos were taken at our last TTime of 2014 at Buckman’s.
The Softball Club invites all SCA residents to join in the fun. Men
and women, if you enjoy playing slow-pitch softball, come watch
for a time or two – or better still, bring baseball shoes, a glove
and a bat, and start playing. The club will provide a bat if you
don’t have one. You can play up to three times free, to see whether
you still enjoy the game. After the third time, we will ask you
to join the club and pay $35 ($17.50 after July 1) annual dues to
continue playing.
A typical day at the field starts with individual warm-up,
usually stretching and running, and then a little throwing. After
that, we have batting practice for around one-half hour before
dividing into between two to four teams, depending on the
number of players who show up on any given day. We are usually
at the field for around three hours.
We play Tuesday and Friday mornings at a City of Henderson
park. Most of the time we’re at Anthem Hills Park, which is right
down the hill from us – head north on Anthem Parkway, make a
right at the light at Reunion, turn left just before the Del E. Webb
Middle School, make the next left into the park. On your right,
you’ll see a lamppost sign that says “Field 1” … go up the hill to the
field. Sometimes the City of Henderson moves us to another park,
which is usually Vivaldi Park on Seven Hills Drive.
For start times and to verify locations, contact John Paul
Molfetta at 702-361-4572 or jpmvegas@yahoo.com. Also check
our website at www.scasoftballclub.wordpress.com.
You must sign the Application/Release form before you
can play. It’s on the website; you can bring it with you on your
first visit if you like. If you need more information, email
club president John Paul Molfetta at jpmvegas@yahoo.com,
or call him at 702-361-4572.

First meet-and-greet of the year
New and returning club members are
invited to a Fat Thursday Mardi Gras meetand-greet at Liberty Center on February 19
from 4:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. Enjoy fun,
food, music, wine, soft drinks … or BYOB.
Learn about upcoming club events, make
new friends, get to know someone you’ve seen on the courts but
don’t know well, find out about our winning league teams, and
even pay your dues if you haven’t already. No need to reserve, just
show up!
League news. The USTA 40+ league kicked off January 10
and will run through early March. SCA is fielding three teams/
captains: W 3.5/Karin Bridges, M 3.5/Chris Payne, W 3.0/Linda
Joven. The league format is two singles and three doubles. There
is still time for anyone interested to sign up with a 40+ team.
Contact the team’s captain.
Mary Anne Van Liere, Karin Bridges, Mel Garraway
USTA 55+ league teams are now being organized. The league
is based on the combined ratings of the doubles pair and the
most appropriate-for-our-age group. Matches consist of three
doubles. We anticipate forming several teams – two W 6.0, one
M 6.0, three W 7.0 and one M 7.0. Matches are scheduled for late
February through May. Recruitment of players is now in progress
and interested players are urged to join. Contact Josie Baker at
josietbaker@cox.net for more information.
We are actively advocating for the formation of a 65+ league.
Many sections in the country have programs for players 65 and
older. Our Intermountain section is still trying to figure out how
to run this league.
Membership. Annual membership dues of only $10 entitles
you to attend our many social events and to use the tennis courts
in the prime time, early-morning hours between 6:00 a.m. and
10:00 a.m. when courts are reserved for Tennis Club members.
The deadline for renewal of dues is the end of February. Members
not paid up by this date will be removed from the member roster
and will lose privileges of playing on club courts during club time.

VETERANS___________________________
The mission of the Sun City Anthem
Veterans Club is to support all service
members, veterans and their families.
Veterans Club meetings are the second
Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m.
in the Delaware Room. Meetings are
open to all residents.
Thank you, members, for your support last year,
evidenced by record attendance averaging 207 per meeting. Your
contributions and dues enable your club to function and fulfill
our philanthropic mission statement.
Our February speaker will be
resident and retired Air Force senior
master sergeant Jerry Jones. He
served throughout the world during
his 20-year military career. One
prestigious assignment was as a
member of the USAF Thunderbirds
Air Demonstration Squadron. He will
address the three tiers of veterans’
pensions, particularly the third tier,
aid and attendance. Few are aware
of this pension, but many veterans
and/or spouses qualify for it. Please
plan to attend and hear Jerry’s informative address. Additional
information on USAF Senior Master Sergeant Jerry Jones is on
our website, www.scaveterans.com.
Davis Leonard. Sadly, this
club founder and decorated WWII
US Army Air Corps hero passed
in December at the age of 91. The
SCAVC owes much to Davis for his
guidance and sage advice. He flew 64
missions over Europe in a B-26 as a
navigator and bombardier, earning
the Distinguished Flying Cross and
most recently the French Legion of
Honor. He truly was one of the great
generation of our time. We miss you
Dave … rest in peace.
The FINF team has interviewed 70 WWII, Korean
War and other veterans. The team is shown here. Clockwise
from top left are Herb Solomon, facilitator; Brian Abbott,
Library of Congress liaison; Tony Calabro, director, cameraman
and editor; Steve McCarthy, host; and interviewer and show
producer Bill Campbell. Please make it a point to view these
compelling and historic interviews posted on the SCA-TV
website at www/sca-tv.com. If eligible, we actively seek your
participation: contact Bill Campbell at 702-263-9302 or
wealthbc@cox.net.
Tune in to our Veterans Corner monthly report
by Herb Solomon, club president, especially for community
veterans on Cox channel 980, or visit www.sca-tv.com the first
week of each month.
Visit the Anthem Veterans Memorial Hall. Those
veterans in good standing in our HOA are eligible to have their
names included on the plaque. Send an email to scaveterans@
cox.net or call Herb Solomon at 702-949-0900 with your request.
Blue Star Mothers. Year after year, your veterans club has
supported this charity and its cause. Recently, the Blue Stars
stuffed 1,260 holiday stockings for shipment to our armed forces
serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. Every year cards of appreciation
are received for this special and patriotic gesture from our brave
warriors. Ladies, the SCAVC membership stands with you.
64 | Sun City Anthem | February 2015
If want to find out where your name is on the Veterans Memorial
Plaque, visit www.scaveterans.com and click on the “plaque” tab.
You can then search for your name alphabetically.
Visit www.scaveterans.com for information about
our club. We cordially invite you to attend our meetings.
Refreshments are served at each meeting.
WOMEN’S_________________________
Message from new president Karen Wilcox:
January saw a new year arrive and the first
event for the Women’s Club 2015 board of
directors, the monthly luncheon, which
was a great success. But it is only the start
of the events scheduled for this year. We
have exciting entertainment for the upcoming luncheons. Sam
Walker Chirico, a local musician, will charm us with his songs
in February, and retired casino security guard Stu Michaels will
keep us laughing with his entertaining stories in March.
Our theme for this year is “15 years of paying forward.” The
Women’s Club has contributed more than $253,000 to local
charities during that decade and a half. That’s a pretty impressive
number! Our generous members have donated not only money;
they also contribute time and resources to local schools, women’s
services and shelters, hospitals, veterans’ services, libraries,
churches and animal shelters. We want to acknowledge these
generous women throughout the year.
The 2015 fashion show will be held once again at the M
Resort on May 15, so mark your calendars. We will be featuring
accessories from Brighton Collectibles and fashions from Chico’s.
“Springtime in Paris” will be the theme. The program is still
under wraps until we have confirmation, but you will love it.
Cost this year is $35 for members and $45 for guests. We know
you will be anxious to get your checks in for the best seats in the
house, but checks will not be accepted until March 15. After that
date, place your check in the Women’s Club box at the Anthem
Fitness Center to reserve your spot. We expect to have lots of
fabulous raffle prizes and the Decorations committee is already
hard at work.
Nine enthusiastic board members are shown with the newly
elected 2015 officers in the photo. The board of directors is
president Karen Wilcox, vice president Sandy Shapiro, secretary
Sue Gordon, and treasurer Candace Karrow, treasurer. They have
a wide range of plans for luncheons, mini events, raffle prizes,
charity donations and special events so stay tuned for upcoming
announcements. Please feel free to contact any board member
with your ideas and suggestions.
If you are looking for a way to get involved in the Women’s Club,
please join us and we will find a committee for you. If you want
to become more involved in the community, let us know and we
will put you in contact with a variety of organizations that could
use your help.
The last day to pay your annual dues and continue being a
member is February 28. After that we must drop you from the
membership list and you’ll miss out on all the exciting activities
of the Women’s Club and will no longer receive the Chatter. We
don’t want to lose you, so be sure you pay your $20 to continue
participating. If you are new to the community or have been away
from the Women’s Club for a while, please join us for our exciting
events and share your talents and ideas with us.
Don’t forget, if you work full or part time, there is a Shared
Interest Group (SIG), the 9 to 5’ers, that meets the second Saturday
of each month at various local restaurants for breakfast and good
fun. Contact Stella Giordano at 702-492-9923 or scaldgior@aol.
com.
Or if you like to bowl and want to meet new friends, another SIG
is the Spare Timers. The group meets the first and third Mondays
at 9:30 a.m. at Southpoint Casino. It’s only $1.75 per game and
that includes shoe rental if needed. Contact Nan O’Malley at 702407-8407 or bnomalley@centurylink.net for more information.
Questions, comments or suggestions? Contact Karen Wilcox at
kwilcoxscawc@centurylink.net or 702-617-6431.

WOODCHIPS________________________
Westward ho! No! It’s Woodchips
hoe! as in Hoe Down! On
December 15, the Woodchips
Club held its annual holiday
party in Independence Center.
The party’s western theme was
perfect for the food provided by Famous Dave’s.
AR Band provided the music and kept the dancers moving.
These boots were made for line dancing, slow dancing and
rocking the night away. A couple of our members were former
drummers; they sat in for a couple of sets showing they never
lost their beat.
_Jeanne Zorick and Bruce Litchfield are to be commended for
putting together a very successful party. They organized a silent
auction that evening and raised $1280 for SAFE House and Blue
Star Mothers.
Woodchips membership is open to all Sun City Anthem
residents for only $35 a year. After mandatory safety training,
new members will be on their way as woodworkers. Woodchips
hours are Mondays (for foremen only, shop projects) and
Tuesdays through Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. for
general member use. The woodshop is located at the rear of
Independence Center.
Visit www.scawoodchips.org for information on the club and
pictures of our members’ projects. We welcome you to stop by
the shop or contact Moira Malone at 702-215-1182 or malone7@
cox.net to become a member.
