SCHOOL
MARCH 2015
HEADTEACHER’S MESSAGE
It is difficult to believe that I have now been in
post for over half an academic year. Such a busy
school means that time flies so quickly and we are
already at that crucial stage where examinations
for our Year 11, 12 and 13 students are in sight. In
addition to the excellent teaching in the classroom,
there are so many varied extra-curricular sessions
now in place to further support students to achieve
their very best this summer. As a school, we are
determined to be our best and to continue to
ensure that Bungay High School is a place that we
are all very, very proud to be a part of.
This is another excellent edition of our Insight
newsletter, full of fantastic and very varied
achievements. I absolutely loved watching Archie
Dobson’s War; our Key Stage 3 students performed
brilliantly and were supported with music from
our Year 10s that was super! I was also delighted
that our Year 10 students’ success with the Royal
College of Art competition made the front page of

the Beccles and Bungay journal – the art work was
spectacular and particularly original and exciting.
There are many more examples of academic and
sporting achievements alongside enrichment
activities in this edition – please enjoy reading it.
Finally, I am in the process of writing to all parents
about whether they would like to join our school
‘Friends’ association (our Parents and Teachers
Association – PTA). As always, when students get
to the end of their Bungay experience and new
ones begin, it provides new opportunities for us
to ‘grow’ this hugely supportive group. We are
inviting interested parents to an informal meeting
on 16th April in the Library (7pm) where there will
be nibbles, we can introduce ourselves, chat and
discuss some future ideas together.

...AND MORE!
ARCHIE DOBSON’S WAR
Bungay High School’s production
of ‘Archie Dobson’s War’, written
by Rob John and set during World
War I, was staged by a cast of
mainly Year 7, 8 and 9 students.
Directed by Head of Drama, Joel
Gunning, the performance saw the
young cast working closely as an
ensemble, with narration roles being
shared between them, interspersed
with scenes creating almost a
‘docudrama’ feel.
Isaac O’Hanlon (Year 8) gave a
sincere portrayal of the young boy
trying to make sense of the war and
its sometimes devastating effects
on his own family. There were also
engaging performances by Daisy Armstrong, Oskar Broderick-White, Hannah Pywell, Gabrielle Raywood
and Helena Drew-Batty as the other Dobsons.
The story was carried along by some well-known World War I songs, including ‘It’s a long way to Tipperary’
and ‘When This Lousy War is Over’, which the whole cast performed with confidence and energy,
accompanied expertly by a band of musicians from Year 10 led by musical director Fran Drew-Batty. Year
7 student, Emilia Bell, contributed some assured solo singing, notably in the final song ‘Can You, Can You
Remember?’ (one of three original songs by Barry Gibson), providing a moving end to the play.

FRENCH EXCHANGE RETURN VISIT
Thursday, 19 March - Monday, 23 March, 2015
This will be the third return visit made to us by the students of the French school in Bouchain with which
we are twinned and as previously, there will be an additional 10 students for whom we are trying to find
host families. The students are aged 14/15 years.
The programme for all the students, English and French will be as follows• Thursday – English hosts meet their French visitors at lunch-time and have lunch together.
• Friday – both English and French students travel by French coach for a fun day of activities in
Cambridge.
• Saturday and Sunday – the French students have the experience of an English weekend.
• Monday they return to France, leaving BHS at 0815.
If you are able to host a French student, please would you contact Mrs. Mortimer either through the School
office or by email on emortimer@bungayhigh.co.uk
There will be a meeting for all involved prior to their visit, shortly after the half-term holiday.
THANK YOU.

YEAR 11 MOCK INTERVIEWS
Between the 11-13th February, Year 11 students took
part in a mock interview. Students had learnt about
writing a CV, interview preparation and interview
techniques in Early Bird Careers sessions to prepare
them for their interviews. The interviews encouraged
students to think about their career paths and their
future plans.
The interviewers were from a selection of industry
personnel, local businesses and school staff. The
interviewers were very impressed with the way the
students engaged well and had prepared themselves,
which for most was the first time they had taken part in
an interview.
Student feedback was very positive:
‘I was really happy and impressed with the
professional setup of the interviews, which has made
me feel more comfortable in going for interviews in
the future’.
‘I felt the interview went very well and the
interviewer gave me lots of advice about taking part
in interviews in the future’.

NUMB3R DAY
On January 9th, 166 Year 7s helped raise both
awareness and funds to support the NSPCC and
Childline. Both of these charities support under
19 year olds with trained councillors, campaigning
on children’s issues and offer advice for adults and
children on bullying and cyber bullying, abuse and
neglect, online safety and many other topics which
can affect the lives of young people. Their work
increasingly focuses on preventing abuse. Working
tirelessly with schools, they are doing everything they
can to understand it and find the best ways to keep
children safe.
The students completed their activities with great
enthusiasm, learning how numbers matter through
games, quizzes and Maths investigations. Overall we
raised £54.93!!
The NSPCC and Childline are available to every child
and young person until their 19th birthday. We hope
to continue to support such a worthwhile cause in the
future.

SPANISH DOUBLE CLUB TRIP TO CARROW ROAD
Since August, a group of 11 students have been taking part in a Spanish Double Club (learning Spanish and
playing football).
On Wednesdays, we have a 40 minute Spanish session after school and the topic has been football which
included students receiving a football training session for 30 or 40 minutes with Matt Leech and they had to
use Spanish words during the game.
As part of the Double Club, on Wednesday 28th of January Matt Leech, Dick Allen and I took the students
to Norwich City Football Club. We arrived at Carrow Road where a guide was waiting for us.
We had a guided tour of the stadium in Spanish (press room, changing rooms, football pitch, trophy room)
and then we had a study session in Spanish, where students had to prepare a list of questions in Spanish.
Later on, they used the questions to interview the Norwich City defender CARLOS CUÉLLAR. Then, the
footballer handed out certificates, signed pictures for the students and had pictures taken with them.

YEAR 12 TRIP TO ST. CATHERINE’S COLLEGE
On Wednesday 11th February, 14 Year 12 students
went on a student visit day to St Catherine’s College
Cambridge. St Catherine’s is the Suffolk Link College
and the day was organised by the schools’ liaison officer
Chris Page. The college is one of the smallest of the
31 colleges at Cambridge with only 400 undergraduate
students. The day incorporated a tour of the college,
an explanation of the Cambridge University application
process, and what the admissions tutors are looking
for. There was also a sample Maths and Physics lecture,
where our students were able to demonstrate their
ability to link topics together. Students were also
involved in an interview workshop where some of the
myths and legends that exist around the Cambridge
interview process were dispelled.
It was lovely to see the excitement and enthusiasm in
our students, and how inspired they were by the place.
Many thanks to Mr Allen for driving the minibus.

LIFE AS A CAMBRIDGE UNDERGRADUATE
a shadow really reinforced his ambitions to apply
and attend Cambridge university. The shadowing
scheme also helped him to consider which of the
29 colleges to apply to as they are all so different.
Helena Blair, Access Officer for CUSU and one of the
organisers of this year’s scheme, explains:
“The Shadowing Scheme gives bright students from
state schools the chance to experience University
life, and really helps to break down the myths
surrounding Cambridge.”
Year 12 student Jake Turner has been trying out
life as a Cambridge undergraduate, as one of 420
participants in the 2015 Cambridge University
Students’ Union (CUSU) Shadowing Scheme.
Organised annually by CUSU, the scheme aims
to give bright young people from non-university
backgrounds the opportunity to experience life at a
top university.
Jake studies at Bungay High School Sixth Form.
At Cambridge he teamed up with a student from
Jesus College, attending lectures, supervisions,
practicals and social events, for a taste of what
undergraduate life at the University is really like.
Jake who is interested in studying Natural Sciences
(Physics) at University, said that his experience as
“We know that some students may be put off
applying to Cambridge by misconceptions and
negative stereotypes, while others just may not
have considered Cambridge or Higher Education as
a viable option.”
“There’s no better insight into being at University
than shadowing a student for a few days during
term-time, and we hope the experience students
like Jake get from the Shadowing Scheme will help
them to make an informed choice about their
options post 6th form.”
‘Shadows’ stay in a Cambridge college, attend
lectures with their undergraduate mentors, and try
out social activities with the University’s student
societies. Cambridge’s 700 societies cover almost
every interest, from journalism to American
football, and theatre to debating.
ROYAL COLLEGE OF ART ACCOLADE
Art Ambassadors were set the task to
create a piece of artwork for the ‘Young
Art’ competition, run by Cancer Research
UK. Sixteen Ambassadors independently
produced stunning pieces of work
for ‘city living’. Out of all the entries,
Bryn Daines, Hannah Cox and Tilly
Mclean have been picked to have their
work displayed in an exhibition at the
Royal College of Art in London, a huge
achievement and accolade for any artist!
Their work will now be judged in the final
round by the charity’s governors and
famous artists in April.

COMPETITION SUCCESS
Sixth Form student, Beatrice Pruton, recently spoke
at the regional heat for the Articulation competition
held at the Cambridge Fitzwilliam Museum.
Articulation, run by the Roche Court Educational
Trust, aims to bring students together united by
their passion for art and their desire to improve their
public speaking skills.
Beatrice was chosen by the Art department at BHS
to attend the regional heat in Cambridge. Beatrice
was one of seven students speaking at the event.
Students had to deliver a ten minute presentation
about the artist of their choice, proving that they
can understand, interpret and analyse artwork in an articulate manner. The judge at the event was Dr
Caroline Vout, reader in classics and lecturer at the University of Cambridge. Beatrice delivered a “highly
academic” presentation about Fiona Rae, an artist that has inspired Beatrice’s own artistic creations. Out
of seven and against stiff competition Beatrice came second, an outstanding effort. She was praised for
her academic content and confident delivery. The judge commented “you clearly make artwork yourself”,
showing Beatrice’s advanced practical understanding of art. Well done Bea from all at Bungay High and
Sixth Form Centre!

6th FORM MIXED HOCKEY
Hartismere High School 0-4 Bungay High School
Bungay travelled to Hartismere, confident of a win after last term’s outstanding draw with Langley. A
strong side made the trip, with the addition of Bea Flatt making up for the injury of Michael Sobel. Bungay
tried to impose themselves as the stronger team from the start, but direct counter attacking nearly
allowed Hartismere to score early on. After this wake-up call, the visiting team started to take control,
with Jack Frere-Smith going close to breaking the deadlock. Both teams were trying to use individual skill
to beat players, which was proving ineffective, but once Bungay started to pass the ball, space was created
for Bea Flatt to fire the ball home to open the scoring.
At Half time, Bungay condensed their press in midfield to stop the dangerous Hartismere long ball. This
provided a lot more turnover ball for Bungay, giving them a stronger platform to attack from. Good
midfield play by Sonny Molloy, Amy Lockwood and Ellen Fewkes-Woodrow constantly led to threats on
the Hartismere goal, eventually leading to Jack Frere-Smith striking to make the score 2-0. Sonny Molloy
then showed great individual skill and strength the beat a few defenders and finish from a tight angle.
Cameron Robson scored the fourth with a deft deflection after a powerful pass across the goal.
Hartismere continued to utilise their pace
upfront well, again drawing Bungay into a
dribbling battle, but May Bowden marshalled
the defensive line strongly , with George Collins,
Sarah Kett and Connor Peck making some vital
interceptions and tackles, requiring Jess Harvey
in goal to only occasionally make smart saves.
Bungay have started the mini-league with
a victory, but with matches against Thomas
Mills and Langley looming in the distance, the
destination of the league title is still far from
certain.
U15 FOOTBALL
Bungay High School’s Under 15 Boys have
progressed through to the Final of the Suffolk
County Football Cup. In the earlier rounds the
lads had comfortable wins in the High Suffolk
Partnership Tournament. Bruno Brown and Jimmy
Morrissey scored the goals in a 2-0 defeat of
Hartismere High. A 3-0 win over Sir Thomas Mills
followed with goals from Brown, Connor Morgan
and Henry Caplin. The lads then qualified for the
Quarter Finals with Jake Sewell and Charlie Delaney
(2) on the score sheet with a win over Debenham
High.
In the quarter final the Bungay boys had a long
journey to Haverhill to play Castle Manor, where
Jimmy Morrissey was the star of the show with a
super hat trick. Our other scorer was Ben Snowling
which ended in a comfortable 4-1 win.
the storm and gradually worked their way back into
the game and it was no surprise when Callum Read
bundled in a deserved equaliser.
A home semi-final followed against East Bergholt on
a chilly afternoon. Bungay’s opponents had several
players who are involved with the County squad
and Ipswich Town. East Bergholt made the stronger
start and went ahead with a towering header from
an in-swinging corner. The Bungay lads weathered
This really was an outstanding win for Mr Bennett’s
team who will play their final in the second half of
the spring term.
Bungay dominated the second half and created
several good opportunities to take the lead.
Pressure was building and the quick feet of
Morrissey won a free kick on the edge of the box
from which the outstanding Brown curled in the
decisive goal. The Bungay boys were first to every
ball and never looked in danger as they played out
the remainder of the match winning 2-1 to clinch
their place in the County final. The win was even
more pleasing as the Bungay lads were without
two of their regular central midfielders and special
mention must be made of Henry Garratt who came
in for his first match and was tireless in midfield.

THE FRIENDS OF BUNGAY HIGH SCHOOL
Join our Parents’ and Teachers’ Association – The Friends of Bungay High School
Dear Parent/Carer
The ‘Friends’ of Bungay High are such an important part of our school. They represent a crucial link
between school and parents and in addition to the fantastic work they do in raising money for us, I
personally value the many discussions that we have, providing me with valuable insights. I strongly
believe that at the heart of a successful school is a supportive and thriving Parents’ and Teachers’
Association.
Over the last two years, our ‘Friends’ committee has become smaller due to members’ children
naturally finishing school. We are very keen to ensure that the excellent work they do continues to
add so much value to the students at Bungay High School. Various projects have included auctions
of promises, cake stalls, supporting with refreshments at school events and wreath making
sessions. Last year, money raised was used to contribute to departments who had made bids to the
Friends for special resources and projects. In recent years, money raised contributed to the school
canopy and students’ outdoor eating area.
Going forwards, we would like to ensure that we are able to take on some really exciting projects!
We are very keen for new members to join us and are happy to accept that different people are
able to make different types of commitment.
Details of our next meeting follows are below. We would like to welcome you to join us for nibbles
and an informal discussion around projects for the summer and 2015-16:

EAST ANGLIAN INTER-CLUB TOURNAMENT
Over half term a much smaller contingent of
Bungay and Beccles Taekwondo students than usual
travelled the 100 miles to Northampton in order
to compete in this year’s inter-club competition.
Many of the usual stalwarts were on holiday or
unavailable due to prior commitments but those
that did attend achieved great success.
From Bungay High School Christian Everett (Year
7) and Liam Everett (Year 9) represented the club
superbly with Liam getting 2 silver medals for
sparring and patterns in his age and belt category
whilst his brother Christian gained bronze for
patterns and brilliant gold for sparring in his
division. He was also praised by all the black belts
for his level of technical ability and self-control
whilst fighting some slightly smaller boys in his
category. Mr Baddour’s son Jed, who trains in the
Wednesday after school club also did really well to
win gold for patterns and bronze for sparring in the
Pee-wees (under 12s).
Mr Gillett finished of the medal haul by winning
gold in sparring and silver for patterns in the
Veteran black belt males. With the medals won
by our Beccles colleagues we came 4th in the
area, only beaten by much bigger towns such as
Wellingborough and Northampton which was a
great, if somewhat surprising achievement!.
Students are getting ready for the British GTUK
Championships at the moment but it is still possible
to come along and train, just contact Mr Gillett for
further details.
Training times; Tuesday 7-8pm, Wednesday 4-5pm
and Thursdays 7-8.30pm.
