The testing window is open February 25 through March 12. Parkside is doing the bulk of the testing the week of March 2. The ISTEP+ is the high stakes assessment given by the state of Indiana to assess student achievement as well as to grade schools and school corporations. Our third grade students will be taking IREAD 3 March 10-11. It is very important that students attend school during these testing windows and do their very best on each and every test. School Pictures Mark your calendar for spring pictures on April 13. All spring pictures will be prepaid this year as we have done in the past. Only students with prepaid envelopes will have their picture taken. More information will be sent home in the Tuesday folder. Call regarding abscences I would like to remind parents to call school by 8:30 if your child is absent. We need to know by then as we begin calling all parents of students that are unverified. Construction Our secure entrance may be finished when you receive this newsletter. If it is not, it should be in the next couple of days. This means all visitors must pass through the office to get anywhere in the building. We are very pleased to finally have a secure entrance at Parkside to improve the safety for our students. The remainder of the construction will begin during spring break. The Harrison room will become two classrooms that will be temporarily used during renovations. The primary wing of the building will be getting new technology and new cabinetry. The intermediate wing will be getting new technology, new flooring and new cabinetry. Primary classes will only be out of their rooms one to two days. Intermediate classes will be out of their rooms one to two weeks. No work will be done in the intermediate wing during the second round of ISTEP testing. Summer break will bring new flooring in the cafeteria, bathrooms, office, library, Harrison room, forum, and intermediate hallways. Bathrooms will also be remodeled with new stalls, sinks, and tiled walls. We are very excited about the fresh look and greater access to technology this renovation will bring to our school. If the answer is yes, come attend the Parkside Pop Band Concert on Thursday, March 12 at 6:30 p.m. in the cafeteria. This concert is free to attend and will feature two student bands, solo and duet acts, and a surprise ending. There will also be an opportunity for those attending to donate! All donations will go towards funding the music classroom at Parkside. Parkside Pop Band was started as an idea for a senior project. A group of several talented 4th-6th grade students have been practicing very hard for the past five weeks and promise to put on an entertaining show featuring songs such as “Happy” by Pharrell Williams, “Firework” by Katy Perry, and many more. Be sure not to miss out on the opportunity to come and support your fellow classmates and Parkside students as they take the stage! We hope to see you there! Let your child know that you think attending school daily is important. Show them you are interested in their school activities and tell them that you want them to do well in school. • Read the school newsletter. Post the school calendar and notes on the refrigerator, or other prominent location to highlight school activities and important student information. • Good attendance habits start at an early age. Make sure your child goes to school regularly and on time. This helps them develop a positive view of school and the importance of attendance. • Do not provide inappropriate excuses for your child to miss school. Do not let them take time off from school for minor ailments–particularly those which would not prevent you from going to work. • Discuss with your student that arriving to school on time and to report to class when dropped off. • Don’t expect or let older children stay home from school to babysit younger siblings. • Become involved in your child’s school life and school activities. • Set good examples and enforce rules. Speak well of the school and support school staff. • Take an interest in your child’s school work. Check homework for accuracy and completeness. • Make a contract with your child to improve his/ her attendance. Reward positive improvement. Thank you to all third, fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students for leading a healthy lifestyle and firing up their brain neurons for learning by jumping rope for 30 minutes from 7:308:00 a.m on Wednesdays and Fridays during the month of February and the first week of March. Students learned a variety of jump rope skills, cross-lateral skills, rhythms, partner skills, jump rope games, and small group jump rope skills. Very proud of you! Divisions for the competition are based on school size and grade levels participating. Parkside earned a score of 30 out of a possible 32 questions, beating the Richards Raiders by three points! That score was then used to rank Parkide RUNNER UP in the STATE competition. There were 107 schools that competed in the blue category this year. This new service will be offered every other week starting in this month. Sign up for a free recycling toter, find out what material are accepted, and find out more at http://www.columbus.in.gov/columbus-recycles/. Caps recycling direction We are making a change in plastic caps recycling at Parkside at the end of this school year. We will continue to collect caps until the end of May if you need a place to recycle them. You can put caps in the recycling toters provided by the new Columbus Recycles program. Mrs. Starnes plans to make outdoor furniture using the caps she has on hand to create more outdoor furniture. Thank you for your caps recycling efforts! parkside paper retriever recycling Parkside will continue to have PaperRetriever bins for recycling newspaper, junk mail, and other paper. Even with the new Columbus Recycles curbside program, not all residences are eligible for the city program. We are still recycling paper from Parkside Court Retirement Center and paper from Parkside School in the PaperRetriever bins, which earns money for Parkside PTO. Whether you choose to recycle with the new Columbus Recycles program, PaperRetriever, or another choice, we thank you for helping save trees by recycling! Key Club’s Aluminum Tab Collection Contest to benefit Ronald McDonald House The Key Clubs from North and East hereby invite you to participate in our 14th ANNUAL Aluminum Tab Collection Contest. The school which collects the most tabs per student, will be awarded possession of the traveling trophy with its school name added as the 14th year winner in the annual “Aluminum Tab Collection Contest.” Traveling trophies will also be presented for second and third place schools. For each 25 pounds of tabs that your school collects, you will receive one entry into our drawing for ONE FREE special program on recycling, provided by the BCSWMD Education Director, Heather Siesel. This is not the usual free program offered by BCSWMD. It will be provided for one classroom (perhaps the class that collects the most pop tabs in your school) and will include several free goodies for every student. Send your aluminum tabs in a plastic bag and deposit into the Ronald McDonald box located outside the cafeteria. The Ronald McDonald House, near Riley Hospital, serves families whose children require care at any Indianapolis area hospital. Guests stay at the House regardless of their ability to pay the requested $15 per night donation. The House depends on the support of other organizations, such as Key Clubs, to maintain operation. 13
