A Newsletter for Oak Meadow Residents Presented By The Oak Meadow Homeowners Association Oak Meadow Woman’s Club Oak Meadow Swim Club OAK MEADOW MARCH 2015 Meadowlark Oak Meadow Homeowners Association News Hello neighbors! We are well into the first quarter of the New Year and the annual HOA meeting, to which all residents are invited, will be coming up on May 7th at OMUMC. One of the items on the agenda will be voting on board officers. Not all officers are voted on each year since we usually serve a two-year term. For the past two years, we (Veronica Gonzalez and Eleanor Settle) have been serving as co-presidents. We are not running for another term in this position and so are appealing to any residents of Oak Meadow to please contact us, or any board member, if you are interested in a position on the board. Trust us, if we can do it, you can do it. There are several people on the board who have many years of experience, so it’s not as if you have to “go it alone.” One of the hardest things facing any HOA board is recruiting board members. We appreciate and understand that many of you have jobs, children, and other commitments which rightly deserve your attention, but we really are in serious need of new board members. There are over 600 homes in Oak Meadow, so we want to get more folks involved in keeping Oak Meadow a progressive and welcoming neighborhood. We don’t even want to think of Oak Meadow without a vibrant, concerned board. Many projects have been accomplished in recent years and our neighborhood is in a great place right now: stable or increasing property values, planned events to bring neighbors together, community education about our restrictive covenants and city code enforcement rules, and a good working relationship with various government offices. We all need to do our best to keep this beautiful neighborhood from deteriorating or becoming one where neighbors do not communicate with or look after each other. Please give serious consideration to serving the Oak Meadow community. We would be happy to speak personally with anyone who has questions about the board and how it functions. Just contact: Eleanor Settle at 492-2771 (e.settle@hotmail.com) or Veronica “Ronnie” Gonzalez at 683-7441 (gonzalezx3@aol.com). If you personally know any of the other board members listed on the roster in this newsletter, they too would be happy to speak with you. www.neighborhoodnews.com/oakmeadow Oak Meadow Woman's Club News & Events The sun came out for a few days in February reminding us that Spring is just around the corner. Neighbors will be out cleaning up their yards and making them ready for a beautiful summer. Debra Lara spends a good amount of her time driving our streets, checking out landscapes for Yard of the Month. Only one is selected to have the Yard of the Month sign, but there are al-ways several Honorable Mention yards. These are published each month in the newsletter. Debra always welcomes nominations either by email or phone. debra@om-wc.org or 213-4930. The annual Wine Tasting Party was held on February 7, at the home of George and Colette Langdin. The event was well attended and fun was had by all. Guests brought either a red or a white wine to be tasted and voted on so that guests could leave with a new label for their wine racks. There was a wide selection of appetizers brought by guests which made the event a big success. Thank you to the Langdins for opening their home and for the nice selection of wines. Mark your calendars for March 7 when the Progressive Dinner will be held. An Evite will be sent to WC members with details. It will be an evening of good food and good conversations. Whether rain or shine, every day is a fine day to read a good book. The WC Book Club meets at different homes the 4th Thursday of each month at 12:45 to discuss the month’s selection. February’s title, My Beloved World, was an autobiography by Sonia Sotomayor who serves on the Supreme Court. The selection for March is fiction, The Diplomat’s Wife by Pam Jenner. For more information contact Celia Glasgow at 492-5593 or celia@om-wc.org. New members are always welcome. Eleanor Settle and Veronica Gonzalez, Co-Presidents OMHOA A Neighborhood News ™ Publication (continued on page 2) Meadowlark mented at the school called The Seven Habits of Happy Kids. We had a table set up to show how OMWC has supported the school this year with school supplies for OM and pajamas for their sister school. Visitors were impressed with our involvement and we were im-pressed with our school. The Sign and Sing choir was most impressive, as were all the children involved with the different aspects of the day. Great job, OM Elementary! There really did seem to be a lot of happy kids there. Speaking of school, WC will be collecting Box Tops and Labels for Education to be used by our schools for much needed items. The labels are worth $.10 each and add up quickly when many clip and collect. Check out these websites for all the everyday products that have labels and start clipping: www.boxtops4education.com www.labelsforeducation.com http://projectaplus.com This will be an ongoing project, year around. Drop them in an envelope and leave them with Marcia Krolick at 14315 Chimney House or with Emily Marshall at 14418 Vantage Hill or with any WC. Let’s help our schools with little labels that are otherwise thrown away. As always, it is never too late to join WC. Check out the Side Groups available and know that you will not regret being a part of this great group. Norma Murphy President OMWC Dial-A-Trailer Coming Soon! The city Dial-a-Trailer will be coming soon to the pool parking lot. We are trying for one of the last Saturdays in April, so now is a great time to start going through your house, garage and yard looking for discards. The trailer will take both bulky items and brush, but if you have any questions about your items please refer to the DAT website for lists of what is acceptable and non-acceptable items at: http://www.sanantonio.gov/swmd/Brush/DialaTrailer.aspx Be sure to check the April newsletter for exact date and details. Signs will also be posted at our neighborhood entrances in advance of the event. The membership drive is in full force, plus plans to re-plumb the pool. Block Walk – March 14th through the 22nd, please be on the lookout for volunteers walking the neighborhood to collect donations to replumb the pool. The plumbing is original to the pool and is in dire need of replacement. It would be disastrous to develop another leak, like the one last year, that cost thousands of dollars in water loss. If every house in the neighborhood donated $50, we would have no problem meeting our goal, plus be half way to new tennis courts. Please consider a donation, and while $50 would be great, anything would help. Also, we will happily collect your membership dues for the pool. If you haven’t been a member before, or it has been years, please give it a try. The pool is a great place to relax, play, and meet new people. Swim Team Sign-ups – The Stingrays are gearing up for a new season! The 1st of two sign up days will be April 18th from 1-3pm at the park. The second date is May 2nd, time to be determined. Everyone is looking forward to another awesome season of competition and fun. Your child does not need to be a strong swimmer to participate on the swim team. Everyone has to start somewhere! Annual Clean Up Day – Calling all volunteers!!! Saturday, April 18th, from 9-12 is clean up day at the park. I love all those beautiful oak trees, but man, can they make a mess. Many hands make light work, so consider giving the pool board a hand with raking, scrubbing, power washing, painting, cleaning, and organizing. I will be happy to sign off on any volunteer hours for local high school students looking for hours. Whether you have 15 minutes or 3 hours, we would love the help. Lifeguards – I will be interviewing for lifeguards in early April. If anyone is interested, please email Anna Clark at annaclark77@sbcglobal. net. Lifeguards must be certified (or in the process of being certified) to be considered. Anna Clark, Pool Manager Part time worker needed for help around the yard and garage. The thieves obliterated the written information on the check (law officers refer this as washing the check.) Thieves using this method then have blank checks to buy merchandise at various local businesses. My friend’s altered checks were written for $500 to $700 at upscale stores and cashed around town. His bank has recovered a number of his stolen checks as they were processed by the banks and is working with law agencies in an attempt to identify the thieves. You are wondering why the stores accepted the checks and that I cannot answer. They probably use stolen or false identification for the customer information on the check. To be safe, consider paying bills by using your bank’s on line BILL PAY SERVICE or dropping your bills off at the post office (inside location.)
