McGeeney
I was going to title this article, The Power of Change and decided to
focus more on what we can do for ourselves rather than waiting for
things happen to us. There is a well-known quote which says, 'to live
'to live
is toischange,
to live
well well
is toischange
often'.
I am sure we all have
to change,
to live
to change
often'.
a desire to live well and embrace change as it happens in our lives;
Ageing, relationships, loved one's dying.
There is a school of thought which says that no one can really
empower us, we can only empower ourselves. The Chinese say that
the word crisis also translates as an opportunity. Rather than moving
from one crisis to the next we see ourselves as moving from one
opportunity to the next. The most useful question to ask from every
experience is 'what can I learn from this'?
Embrace the learnings however hard and move on. I will say that
again, embrace the learning no matter how hard and move on. No
matter how hard on our ego or self-image, we need to continually
look at ourselves, especially our motivations for doing what we do. I
have read that by the time we reach thirty five we have our minds
made up about the big issues, having fixed views about everything.
I suggest change becomes possible when I love myself enough:
1. that I quit settling for too little.
2. that I come to know my own goodness.
3. that I begin taking the gift of life seriously and gratefully.
4. that I begin to slow down - way down - And that makes all the
difference.
5. that I re-define success and life becomes simple; oh, and the
pleasure of that.
6. that I come to know that I am worthy of knowing God directly.
7. that I give up the belief that God is hard.
8. that I learn to meet my own needs and not call it selfish.
9. that I quit ignoring or tolerating my pain.
10. that I start feeling all my feelings, not analysing them – really
feeling them. When I do, something amazing happens, try it and see.
11. that I quit wishing my life looks some other way and begin to see
that as it is my life serves my evolution.
12. that I begin to feel a divine presence in me and hear its guidance.
13. that I quit exhausting myself by trying so hard.
14. that I stop blaming myself for choices I have made which made
me feel safe, and take responsibility for them.
15. that I begin to see the abuse in trying to force something or
someone who isn't ready to include me.
16. that I become my own authority by listening to the wisdom of my
heart, this is how God speaks to me.
17. I begin leaving whatever isn't healthy; this means people, jobs,
my own beliefs and habits – anything that keeps me small.
18. that I give up perfection – that killer of joy.
19. that I can tell the truth about my gifts and limitations.
20. that I can feel God in me and God in you.
21. that I learn to say no when I want to and yes when I want to.
22. that I realise that I am never alone.
23. that I quit re-hashing the past and worrying about the future which
keeps me in the present where aliveness lives.
Changing any routine or behaviour is hard work, we must love
ourselves UN-conditionally to do so, pray to the Holy Spirit for the
strength to overcome our human weaknesses and humbly seek
guidance. I want to conclude with a favourite saying of mine, 'the
reason angels can fly is because they take themselves so lightly'!
I wondered where the draught came from! The organ
restoration
By Richard Watts
To recap - 2 years ago the organ rebuild project started after the
discovery of a split in one of the main wind reservoirs which led to the
discovery that all the leatherwork was over 100 years old and needed
repairs. Advice from the diocese was that all leatherwork should be
replaced and other repairs carried out as soon as possible.
An organ consultant was employed and three quotations obtained
with the winning quotation being just under £70,000.
As I write in mid-March 2015 much work has already been carried out
with the first two of the releathered reservoirs, together with other
parts, returned from the organ builders works to the church where
they sit, protected by cling film, on pews in the South Aisle.
Gradually more parts are removed from the organ and being returned
to the organ works for renovation and this process will carry on for
potentially three months since none of the upper work repairs have
been started.
The electronic organ installed temporarily has come from my home
and has been enhanced by the speaker system installed behind the
main pipes. The siting of the organ console is very good for seeing
and conducting the choir and did lead us to consider, at one point,
whether a better position for the pipe organ was possible. Sadly,
without a major incursion into the Lady Chapel this will not be
possible.
At the same time as the organ work is being carried out attention is
being given to a large area of bad plastering behind the bass organ
pipes to prevent further damp coming in and to remove and seal
plasterwork where it had crumbled away.
We all look forward to the completion of the work, possibly in May,
when a series of organ concerts will be announced and the church
wardens able to reclaim the South Aisle pews for the use of the
congregation.
St Barnabas Wives Fellowship.
There was no meeting in January.
February - we had a silent Auction which raised £74.90 for our funds,
we also had a Jacket Potato Supper which included Apple Strudel
and Custard followed by tea/coffee and the drawing of the raffle.
March - Melodica a group of 10 working mums came and sang for
us. Steph explained how they got together before they sang songs
from Chess and Wizzard of Oz followed by a selection of songs some
by Adele and the Corrs.
After which we had Simnel cake made by one of our members with
tea/coffee and the usual raffle.
The Men of Linslade: 2 by Kate Crooks
Private Jack Walker 9519, 2nd Bn., Bedfordshire Regiment
Died 8 November 1914, age 23
Jack Walker’s father John moved from East Dereham in Norfolk to
Leighton Buzzard in the 1880s. John Walker was a “coachsmith”, as
was his father before him, and it is tempting to imagine him moving to
Linslade for a job at W King’s Battlesden Steam Carriage Works, the
predecessor of Morgan & Co on the site now occupied by Tesco.
John was born in Suffolk and married Letitia Oakes, also from
Suffolk, in Leighton Buzzard in the summer of 1887. They had three
sons, Harry, Jack (actually another John) and Albert, moving to 38
New Road, Linslade between the births of Harry, in 1888 and Jack, in
early 1891. John died in late 1899 at the age of 34, leaving Letitia to
support her family as best she could. Although her house was small,
she took in four boarders.
On the 1911 Census Jack appears as a 20 year old Private in the 2nd
Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment in Bermuda. It is likely that Jack’s
older brother Harry was also a serving soldier; from early in WW1 the
Leighton Buzzard Observer consistently includes “Harry Walker of
New Road”, as well as Jack, in its regular list of men who were
serving.
At the outbreak of WW1 the 2nd Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment
was in South Africa, from where they returned to England
immediately to re-equip. They reached Belgium on 7 October 1914
and took up a position on the Ypres-Menin road. They first saw action
on 18 October, and fought throughout the 1st Battle of Ypres (19
October - 22 November).
Jack Walker was presumed to have died on 8 November 1914 and is
commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial. The Battalion War
Diary shows that the Battalion was relieved on 5 November; they had
been in the trenches for eighteen days of heavy fighting and suffered
many casualties. On 8 November the Battalion was in Ploegsteert
and the Diary records no action or casualties on that day.
Jack’s younger brother Albert, a coach painter, enlisted in the middle
of September 1914 in the Buckinghamshire Battalion of the Territorial
Force (at seventeen and a half he was too young for the Regular
Army) and served throughout the war. Despite being gassed several
times he was declared fit on demobilization in 1919.
Answer to Ian’s puzzle from last month.
No, it is not that they all have at least 2 double letters....
Answer:
In all of the words listed, if you take the first letter, place it at the
end of the word, and then spell the word backwards, it will be the
same word. Did you figure it out? No? Then send this to more people
and stump them as well. Then, you'll feel better too.....
Christian Aid Week 2015
10-16 May 2015
Christian Aid Week is the single biggest act of Christian
witness in Britain and Ireland.
For thousands of people throughout the country, it's a way
of answering Jesus’s call to help people in need, and showing the
community just how much good the church is doing in the world.
Back to Basics by Ian Woodward 26th, October 2014
At St Barnabas 08:00 & 10:00 .Readings: Leviticus 19:1&2, 15-18, 1
Thessalonians 2:1-8, Matthew 22:34-46
Open our hearts, Lord that we may hear you speaking to each one of
us. Amen.
Have you heard the weather forecast?
Tomorrow will be muggy, followed by tuggy, weggy...
Two drunks met on a train and one said to the other, “Is this
Wembley?” “No, it’s Thursday!” “So am I. Let’s go and have a drink!”
Little word jokes. I like words and word puzzles and jokes.
The scribes and Pharisees liked words and used them. They used
them to try and trip up Jesus. They asked questions to which any
answer was wrong. Or so they thought.
But Jesus just wanted to point people toward God. He wanted
them to get back to basics. Jesus wanted people to understand
God’s words. Not to be confused by them.
But the Chief Priest and his friends had other ideas. I am sure that
the Chief Priest had a group of scholars, tucked away, thinking of
questions to ask Jesus. Questions to bring down his popularity.
Questions with impossible answers.
And they would follow Him around waiting for the moment. But
sometimes questions came up spontaneously. Someone would ask
the question. The crowd would nod that it was a good question.
Then everyone would wait.
The woman was caught in adultery! “Should we stone her?”
Answer “No!” and Jesus is not following the law. Answer “Yes!” and
he condemns the woman to death. Jesus tells them to follow the law,
but let him that is without sin cast the first stone.
That could have happened spontaneously but this question, “Should
we pay taxes to Rome?” I don’t think so. “Yes!” is not a popular
answer, and “No!” is treason. But Jesus takes a coin and says this is
Caesars head. Give to Caesar what is Caesars and to God what is
God’s.
The scribes would be ready to jump on any indiscretion. The ordinary
people would just wait for the answer. Several times it is recorded,
“That no one dare ask him any more questions.” That is until the next
time. Until the “group” comes up with another question.
Then they come up with a question. An age old question for
academic Jews of their era. What is the greatest
commandment? How often did the learned men of Judah
discuss this? Some approach the commandments like an exam.
Attempt any three.
So they ask Jesus. Which is the greatest commandment? And
there is no messing about with the answer, No parables, no “Let me
ask you a question first. And I am sure he looked them in eye and
said,
“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your
soul and with all your mind.” “And the second is likened to it
“To love your neighbour as you love yourself.”
And he adds, “On these two commandments hang all the Law and
the Prophets.” Back to basics, love God, love your neighbour. In
almost everything when stuck, back to basics.
I worked for BT for thirty years and a friend of mine always said,
Whenever we were stuck on a fault, “Its only two wires, Ian”.
To love God is a direct quote from, what we know as, Deuteronomy
6:5. Jesus is telling them and us to love God with everything we
have. Last week Bernard told us, at harvest, that we were thanking
God.
Thanking Him for His gifts to us and for ourselves.
That is how we love God with all our being. When we see a tree or
flower, an animal or bird. When I see a red kite circling, trying to
catch a thermal, I want to stop the traffic and get everyone to watch.
When we lived in Dagenham we found a mummy hedgehog and
babies in our garden. I am sure that you have seen some wonderful
sights in God’s World, met some wonderful people. We should all
Praise God for all those things.
The love your neighbour quote comes from Leviticus 19:18. He had
already told them who their neighbours were. He had demonstrated it
also in never turning anybody away.
It is not easy, but we must keep asking ourselves, “Would I want to
be treated in that way?” “Am I being as fair to that person as I would
want others to be to me?”
Let us not play word games. Let us not think that it will not matter this
once. If we love God it always matters how we treat others.
Because we are watched, by ourselves, by others and by God.
There is a story at the end of the 19th century a woman came for
communion. In those days you needed a communion coin to be able
to take communion. So she came to the priest and he asked her
several questions about the Catechism and asked her to read a
passage from the Bible.
The poor woman had no learning whatsoever and looked up from the
Bible and said, “Sir, I cannot answer your questions and I cannot
read these holy words, I just want to worship and praise my Lord and
Saviour.” She got her coin.
Let us get back to basics, Love God and Love your
neighbour.

designed by Sheila Deighton and feature much symbolism.
There are five kneelers. The central one has a unique design whilst the
four outside are of a similar pattern. The motif in the middle of the central
kneeler of chalice and ears of wheat, flanked by bunches of grapes, is
emblematic of the elements of the Eucharist. The upper and lower borders
are common to all the kneelers. The roses are symbolic of the diocese of
Saint Alban’s, whilst the lower border of thistles are the emblem of Saint
Barnabas.
In the centre of the outer kneelers is a scallop shell an emblem of our
pilgrimage.
The kneelers were embroidered by Sheila, Carolyn Birch, Anne Ewart,
and Sandra Moore. The canvases were mounted on frames for
embroidery by John Deighton, who also drove to and fro to Norfolk
several times to organise the filling.
The canvas has a mesh of 10 per inch. Therefore 100 stitches are needed
per square inch of embroidery meaning that in total we have close to half
a million stitches!
