The course as a whole focuses on Turkish foreign policy from historical and conceptual
perspectives. It deals with the main issues, decision-making process, internal and external factors
influencing Turkey’s foreign policy from the late Ottoman times until the early 2000s. After
clarifying foundations and basic principles (in its historical evolution) of the TFP, selected issues in
TFP will be discussed.
Course Requirements
• Students are expected to do readings, watch weekly podcasts/videos and be ready to discuss in
class.
• Students will participate in class discussions and write weekly blog postings
• Each student is required to write a Foreign Policy Analysis paper (3500-5000)
• Guidelines for the assignments will be circulated early in the semester.
1. Attendance (5% of the final grade will come from participation over 70%)
Students are expected to take active part in the class,
2. Class discussions (25%)
As the format of the course is based on class discussions not lectures students are expected to
attend classes regularly and to take active part in class discussions.
3. Blog Posts (40%)
During the term students will be asked to have a blog for this course and write weekly blog posts in
class to publish in their blogs after instructor’s corrections/revisions. In total students are required to
write 8 blog posts.
4. Foreign Policy Analysis Report (30%)
Reading Guidelines
As participation of class discussions are significant part of the assessment students are expected to
read before the class. There is no weekly readings lists. Students are expected to read selectively
among suggested textbooks. In their blog posts and class discussions they are expected to show
their level of knowledge on the literature. Besides the following textbook suggestions students will
be provided a list of bibliography on Turkish Foreign Policy.
