The palace used to be a fortification protected by bulwarks and towers, partially preserved today. Near the palace there are two Roman towers dating from the 13th century. On the southern side of the palace, there are two watchtowers with the armourer’s shops. On the front surface of the left tower there’s a sundial. Today’s Kaštel is completely renovated. Three palace stores are transformed into apartments for public sale. The parochial church of St Martin In the vicinity of Kaštel, the church of St Martin is settled. Its foundations were laid in the 19th century. The construction continues over the period between 1927 and 1935. The church tower was built in 1991. The church displays interesting art objects. The rich Istrian cuisine offers variety of meals. Every village has its own typical seasoning and aroma. Still, Istrian cooking stays faithful to its tradition, offering its typical traditional meals, such as “maneštra”(thick soup containing noodles, rice, vegetables, etc, and Parmesan) with fennel, macaroni, polenta cooked in Istrian way, cabbage with lamb prepared under a baking lid. Most famous meals are the Istrian smoked ham, pork fillet and sausages. Istrian sea is rich with seafood. The most valued fish is the sea bass, as well as gilthead and sole. The most famous shells are oysters and mussels. The following pages display all the restaurants and inns offering the right choice of a good Istrian meal. Wine has been part of the Istrian tradition for centuries. The most popular white wines are the Istrian malmsey, the grey and white Pinot, Sauvignon and Chardonnay.
