UVODNA RIJEČ
Uvodna riječ organizatora
Institut za razvoj obrazovanja
Poštovane/i,
Zadovoljstvo mi je pozdraviti sve posjetitelje
ovogodišnjeg Sajma stipendija i prateće obrazovne
ponude u ime Instituta za razvoj obrazovanja (IRO),
pokretača i organizatora Sajma stipendija.
studenti i ostali zainteresirani mogu saznati sve o
mogućnostima studija i stipendiranja u Hrvatskoj i
inozemstvu.
bez potpore njegovih partnera, sponzora i donatora.
Uspješna organizacija Sajma rezultat je partnerstva više
od 50 institucija, kao i angažmana brojnih volontera.
Svima navedenima upućujemo iskrenu zahvalu i
donosi niz novosti i inovacija:
• Sajam se ove godine održava po prvi puta u dva
hrvatska grada: Zagrebu i Rijeci. Nadamo se da
će u nadolazećim godinama i drugi sveučilišni
gradovi biti zainteresirani ugostiti Sajam u svojim
gradovima.
• Osim bogate ponude za studente i učenike (više
od 30 uglednih izlagačkih institucija iz Hrvatske,
Europe, Sjeverne Amerike i Azije), ovogodišnji
Sajam po prvi puta nudi bogat popratni
program namijenjen i donosiocima odluka,
nastavnicima, istraživačima, administrativnom
osoblju zaposlenom na institucijama u visokom
obrazovanju te široj javnosti. Naime, Sajam
dovodi renomirane svjetske stručnjake koji će
govoriti o komercijalizaciji i financiranju visokog
obrazovanja, a održat će se i prezentacije i okrugli
stolovi na temu internacionalizacije visokog
obrazovanja.
• Zemlja partner ovogodišnjeg Sajma su
Sjedinjene Američke Države, zemlja s preko 4
900 akreditiranih visokih učilišta i s najboljim
sveučilištima na svijetu prema međunarodnim
rang listama sveučilišta.

Studying in the United States
Why Study in the United States?
The United States continues to host more
international students than any other country.
International student enrollment at American
colleges and universities has been growing steadily
over the past five years, increasing by 5% in 2010/11,
to reach a record high of 723,277 students.
GOOD TO KNOW:
The most recent report produced by NAFSA: The Association of International Educators estimates that
international students studying in the United States in 2010-11 received a total of $7.7 billion in financial
assistance.
With more than 4,500 accredited higher education institutions, the United States offers the greatest diversity
available of students, campus environments, entry requirements, tuition fees and living costs, making it the
premier international destination for higher education.
“The United States continues to host more international students than any other country in the world. Active
engagement between U.S. and international students in American classrooms provides students with valuable
skills that will enable them to collaborate across cultures and borders to address shared global challenges in
the years ahead.” – Dr. Allan E. Goodman, President and CEO of the New York-based Institute of International
Education
Here are just a few of the reasons why international students from around the world are furthering their education
in the United States:
Quality: U.S. colleges are known worldwide for the quality of their facilities, resources, and faculty. Accreditation
systems ensure that institutions continue to maintain these standards.
Choice: The U.S. education system features many types of institutions, academic and social environments, entry
requirements, degree programs, and subjects in which you can specialize.
Value: As an investment in your future, a U.S. degree offers excellent value for your money. A wide range of
tuition fees and living costs, plus financial assistance opportunities, make study in the United States affordable for
hundreds of thousands of international students each year.
Flexibility: U.S. universities and colleges offer flexibility in choice of courses; more importantly, students also have
the option to move from one institution to another. Completing the first two years of a degree at one institution,
usually a community college, and then moving to another, is very common.

“Students are drawn to the experience of U.S. campus life and the flexible degree programs that offer them an
opportunity to develop new skills and a deeper understanding of their full potential.” – Wesley Teter, Regional
Director of EducationUSA
Another contributing factor is greater access to comprehensive and accurate information about study in the U.S.
through EducationUSA advising offices and increased level of activity by United States colleges and universities
to attract international students.
GOOD TO KNOW:
583 Croatian students studied in the U.S. in 2010/11. Most of them attended Undergraduate (45,8%) and
Graduate (40,0%) programs. Top three Undergraduate institutions were: Florida International University,
Lindenwood University and DePaul University. Most popular Graduate institutions for Croatian students were
Harvard University, University of Chicago and Yale University.
Top fields of study of International students in the U.S.: Business and Management, Engineering, Math and
Computer Science.
Primary source of funding of International students in the U.S.: Personal and Family (63,4%), U.S. College
or University (22,9%), Foreign Government or University (5,8%).

“Your 5 Steps to U.S. Study”
About
In an ongoing effort to explain the road to U.S. higher
education in a more easily understood manner, EducationUSA
released “Your 5 Steps to U.S. Study” on the “For International
Students” section of the EducationUSA site
(www.educationusa.info).
GOOD TO KNOW:
Visit the U.S. Embassy booth and EducationUSA Corner at the Fair (available from 10:00 till 18:00 in Zagreb
and 10:00 till 17:00 in Rijeka) and find out more on the „5 Steps to U.S. Study“, take part in the standardized
tests workshops and talk to the U.S. Alumni! Central presentation “Access American education: 5 steps to
U.S. Study” will be held from 13:15 till 14:15.
To help students navigate their way through the sometimes overwhelming college search, application, financial
aid, visa, and pre-departure process, EducationUSA recommends the following steps all students should take:
1. Research Your Options
Get Started Today! The first step to studying in the United States is researching your choices to find a college or
university that best fits your needs.
“Don’t try to match yourself to a university, rather try to pick a university that matches you.” – Undergraduate
student from the United Kingdom
10
PARTNER COUNTRY: UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
2. Complete Your Application
Plan Ahead! Plan adequately for the time and effort involved in preparing your application package.
“The essay is such an important part of your application. Take the chance to show that you’ve got something
extra.” - Mathematics student from South Korea
3. Finance Your Studies
Invest in Yourself! The cost of living and studying varies across the United States. With the right amount of
planning and research, it can be made affordable with high returns on your investment.
“If you are doing well academically and have good grades, think about applying for an international student
scholarship.” - Student from Morocco
4. Apply for Your Student Visa
Be Prepared for the Student Visa Process! Become familiar with the student visa requirements in your country
and allow plenty of time to prepare your application.
“Because interviews are short, do your best to explain why you want to study in the United States, how you plan
to support yourself while in school, and what your plans are for when your studies are finished.”- Vice Consul, U.S
Consulate Monterrey, Mexico
5. Prepare for Your Departure
The Journey of a Lifetime! Studying in the United States is a memorable and rewarding experience—
congratulations on taking this exciting step towards your future!
“Find out about airline and immigration policies and procedures so you do not panic if something strange
happens—luggage, passports, what you can and what you cannot bring. It’s always better to know everything
beforehand.” - Computer Science student from Brazil
Whether seeking an undergraduate, graduate, English language, or short-term/exchange program, international
students will traverse their way through these different steps. At EducationUSA, our goal is to broaden the reach
of what our advisers on the ground can do by providing these useful, interactive guides online to better prepare
students for the road ahead, and to propel them closer to achieving their dream of U.S. study.
GOOD TO KNOW:
No official ranking system exists for colleges and universities in the United States. The best college or university
is the one that is best for you and meets your requirements—academic, financial, and personal.

U.S. Alumni Community of Croatia
(USACC)
About
USACC is a voluntary non-governmental, non-profit association of
US affiliated Croatian individuals. Established in 2011, USACC serves
as a community for connecting Croatian Alumni, US academics
and Croatia-bound US Scholars in order to improve mutual
understanding between Croatian and US societies.
USACC aims to bring all existing American alumni associations, such as existing associations of the American
Fulbright Alumni Program and Ron Brown Association, under a single umbrella organization. As the first such
organization in Croatia to encompass all American Alumni, USACC hopes to facilitate increased networking, the
exchange of ideas and the building of new initiatives within the Croatian alumni community. On a global scale,
USACC aims to build cooperative relationships with like associations across the globe. The goal of this Community
is to secure mutual transfer of knowledge and expertise and build new initiatives in Croatia’s public, business and
civil sectors.
The first and only of its kind in Croatia, the U.S. Alumni Community in Croatia is part of the project which was
implemented by the Institute for the Development of Education Zagreb and generously supported by the U.S.
government and U.S. Embassy Zagreb, Croatia.
For detailed information on USACC please visit http://www.usaccroatia.com.
GOOD TO KNOW:
You can talk to the U.S. Alumni at the U.S. Embassy booth and EducationUSA Corner at the Fair!
Sharing a U.S. Alumnus experience: Assist. Prof. Dejan Vinković, physicist, Faculty of Science Split
“I can state with certainty that my higher education in the U.S. – PhD in physics at University of Kentucky, followed by
4 years of scientific work at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, has greatly influenced me and my work as a
university professor and scientist. This experience has primarily changed my view on the role universities and scientists
have in the community.
Integration of universities in the life of local community, professor-student relationship, cooperation between
universities and the economy, enhancing the quality of teaching and science, relationship between universities and the
alumni community, as well as the communication between the universities and the public are only a few of many issues
that you become aware of while living and working at American universities.
Working as a scientist in the U.S. gives you an insight in steps required to foster science and why the U.S. is one of the
leading countries in the process of transferring technology from an idea or scientific discovery into a final product.
It is not by chance that American universities are ranked among the best in the world and that the U.S. is a leader in
science and technology.
Therefore, I am strongly confident that students or young scientists would benefit from spending at least a few years in
the United States in order to personally experience the atmosphere of the American academic community and hopefully
transfer at least a part of the knowledge and skills gained in the U.S. to their homeland.”

About the Keynote Speaker
Rebecca Zeigler Mano is an Educational Advisor at the U.S Embassy Public Affairs Section in Zimbabwe. On a
daily basis, she assists, informs and guides both school leavers and graduates who are interested in accessing an
American education. For the past ten years, she has worked tirelessly to ensure students are accepted into U.S
colleges with adequate funding.
Formerly an Oversees Advising Coordinator for NAFSA: the Association of International Educators where she
served as the Liaison between the board and International Educators worldwide, Rebecca was elected Chair of
one of only five of NAFSA’s Knowledge Communities, a role she has held as of January 2007.
In May 2006 she received the Marita Houlihan Award for Distinguished Contributions to the Field of International
Education from NAFSA. In 1999 she was recognized by the city of San Francisco, her hometown, and awarded the
Certificate of Honor from Board of Supervisors.
In 1999 Rebecca Zeigler Mano founded a small, ambitious but highly organized program called the United States
Student Achiever’s Program (USAP) in Zimbabwe. Primarily, the program’s goal was to encourage and assist highly
talented but economically disadvantaged high school graduates access scholarships and full-funding at top US
colleges and universities. Starting off with 13 students, USAP has since grown into an international program
spanning countries across the continents such as South Africa, Nigeria, Benin, Mongolia, Brazil, Ecuador, Estonia,
Romania and The United Kingdom, among others. Rebecca’s vision of educating the underprivileged has broken
borders and through a dedicated network of Educational Advisors in various countries, USAP has significantly
impacted the lives of the recipient youths. There are currently over 150 USAP students in the United States, most,
highly dedicated to their communities, bringing about change both on their campuses and in their communities
back home.

osoblju zaposlenom na institucijama u visokom
obrazovanju te široj javnosti. Naime, Sajam dovodi
renomirane svjetske stručnjake koji će govoriti o
komercijalizaciji i financiranju visokog obrazovanja,
a održat će se i prezentacije i okrugli stol na temu
internacionalizacije visokog obrazovanja.
Paralelno
s
izlagačkim
dijelom
Sajma,
održavat će se i predavanja izlagača vezana uz
mogućnosti studiranja i financiranje studija. Na
predavanjima će posjetitelji moći saznati više o
pojedinim studijskim programima i programima
stipendiranja, o uvjetima za upis i dobivanje
stipendija te o preporukama za uspješan odabir
željenih programa i ostvarenje obrazovnih ciljeva.
Na početku popratnog programa će biti predstavljena
Inicijativa u visokom obrazovanju za Jugoistočnu
Europu, nastala na poticaj University of Georgia (SAD),

Poznata međunarodna stručnjakinja prof. dr.
Sheila Slaughter (University of Georgia) govorit će
o akademskom kapitalizmu, kontroverznoj temi
poduzeća, profesori poduzetnici, a studenti kupci
obrazovnih usluga.
Strateški planovi za jačanje internacionalizacije u
hrvatskom visokom obrazovanju te povećanje
akademske mobilnosti bit će predmet diskusije na
okruglom stolu između predstavnika Ministarstva
znanosti, obrazovanja i sporta RH, visokih učilišta i
drugih partnera.
Danas se većina zemalja u svijetu susreće s problemom
osiguranja dostatnih financijskih sredstava studentima
za pokrivanje rastućih troškova studiranja - o
financiranju visokog obrazovanja će u svojoj radionici
govoriti renomirani američki stručnjak prof. dr. Robert

Grad Rijeka
Stipendije Grada Rijeke
Stipendije grada Rijeka za darovite učenike 3. i 4. razreda srednje škole
i studente
prioritet: “Stipendiranje studenata deficitarnih zanimanja u socijalnoj skrbi”. Sukladno tome, u akademskoj

Ministarstvo pomorstva, prometa
i infrastrukture
O nama
Ministarstvo pomorstva, prometa i infrastrukture je 2006.
godine započelo s provedbom Projekta stipendiranja redovitih
studenata preddiplomskog sveučilišnog studija nautičkog i
brodostrojarskog smjera i učenika koji pohađaju srednjoškolsko
obrazovanja nautičkog i brodostrojarskog smjera.
plovidbe, zaštitu ljudskih života i zaštitu morskog okoliša.
srednjoškolsko obrazovanje nautičkog i brodostrojarskog smjera. Prema navedenom Projektu, stipendija za
studente iznosi 1.200,00 kn, a za učenike 800,00 kn mjesečno.
Kriteriji za dodjelu stipendija:
·· Upisana prva godina redovnog studija na pomorskom fakultetu, odnosno viša godina studija, ukoliko su prethodne savladane bez ponavljanja
·· Upisan prvi razred srednjoškolskog pomorskog obrazovanja, odnosno drugi, treći i četvrti razred, ukoliko su prethodni savladani bez ponavljanja
Odabir stipendista se vrši temeljem javnog natječaja, a stipendije se dodjeljuju ovisno o osiguranim sredstvima u
Državnom proračunu RH.
Ciljevi
·· stimuliranje upisa odgovarajućeg broja učenika u srednje pomorske škole odnosno studenata na pomorske fakultete
·· kontinuirano unapređenje razvoja stručnog kadra na brodovima hrvatske trgovačke mornarice, kao jamstvo za sigurnost plovidbe, zaštitu ljudskih života i zaštitu morskog okoliša
·· promicanje strateških ciljeva pomorstva

Ministarstvo znanosti, obrazovanja
i sporta RH i Agencija za mobilnost
i programe EU
O nama
Ministarstvo znanosti, obrazovanja i sporta od 1996. godine dodjeljuje državne stipendije
redovitim studentima sveučilišnih (preddiplomskih, diplomskih i integriranih preddiplomskih
Hrvatskoj pripadnicima romske nacionalne manjine. Nadalje, Ministarstvo nudi i različite
Temeljem ugovora i bilateralnih programa s dvadeset i devet zemalja svijeta Ministarstvo znanosti, obrazovanja
i sporta posredstvom Agencije za mobilnost i programe Europske unije objavljuje natječaje i predlaže kandidate
za sljedeće kategorije stipendija:
·· preddiplomski i diplomski sveučilišni studij
·· poslijediplomski/doktorski studij
·· istraživačke stipendije i studijski boravci
·· jezični ljetni tečajevi
Natječaji i potrebna dokumentacija objavljuje se na mrežnim stranicama Ministarstva znanosti, obrazovanja i

CEEPUS (Central European Exchange Program for University Studies)
obrazovanja i usavršavanja u visokom obrazovanju.
Marie Curie stipendije (EU)
Unutar Sedmog okvirnog programa Europske unije za istraživanje i tehnološki razvoj osmišljen je i program
People koji financira usavršavanje istraživača kroz međunarodnu mobilnost unutar, ali i izvan Europe. Aktivnosti
pruža mogućnosti usavršavanja istraživača kroz obveznu mobilnost i to unutar mreže istraživačkih organizacija
