Christ Ascends
Perhaps no doctrine in the Christian Church has
been more misunderstood in the modern age
than this one. In an age when "up" literally did
mean "heaven" the ascension made sense.
Today scenes of Jesus jet-packing into the
clouds merely evoke
giggles. Interestingly, the
lack of realism in icons
makes this less of a
problem. Once you know
that the unearthly
mandorla represents
heaven (here, the concentric blue circles around
Christ) the icon can be
taken clearly for what it
represents ... not Jesus
"going up" literally but the
glorification of Christ in
heaven.
The ascension happened
some time after the
resurrection when the
appearances of the risen
Christ had largely
ceased. The apostles
gathered with the Virgin
Mary and Christ and angels
appeared, Christ himself
radiantly disappearing from
sight. Perhaps even the
Scriptures do not imply a literal "cloud," (Acts
1:9). When the Jews talked of the divine glory
in the Old Testament they frequently spoke of a
radiant cloud (shekinah). So there we have it,
Jesus, at the Ascension was glorified and
received into heaven. This was the necessary
prelude to the gift of the Holy Spirit. With the
ascent of One came the descent of Another.
But Why us?
The title ... may be a little puzzling. Why are
we invited to focus on something to do
with us when the ascension has commonly
been thought to apply only to
Christ? They key to this may be found in
the 17th Chapter of the Gospel of St.
John when Our Lord prays the so-called
High Priestly prayer with his disciples
before he goes to his death. These
passages are significant and anticipate the
ascension, (which is not otherwise
recorded in St. John's gospel).
1
Jesus spoke these
words, lifted up His
eyes to heaven, and
said: “Father, the hour
has come. Glorify Your
Son, that Your Son also
may glorify You, 2 as
You have given Him
authority over all flesh,
that He should give
eternal life to as many
as You have given
Him. 3 And this is
eternal life, that they
may know You, the only
true God, and Jesus
Christ whom You have
sent. 4 I have glorified
You on the earth. I
have finished the work
which You have given
Me to do. 5 And now, O
Father, glorify Me together with Yourself,
with the glory which I
had with You before the world was.
and ....
24
“Father, I desire that they also whom You
gave Me may be with Me where I am, that
they may behold My glory which You have
given Me; for You loved Me before the foundation of the world.
In St. John's Gospel, the hour of glory

Landscaping Changes at St. Anthony
It's almost summer, and St. Anthony Church is getting a
new look! If you haven't been to church lately, you're
missing all the excitement. Changes are happening inside
the church, and just in time for festival planning, the outside of church is under development as well. Some of the
plants are in desperate need of help, and many overgrown
plants require removal.
If you would like to purchase a rose bush in memory of a
friend or family member, please contact the church office.
Roses and other plants can be purchased for $50.00 each,
which includes fresh dirt/installation. Please mail or drop
off your checks earmarked, LANDSCAPE. If you would
like to volunteer to plant roses or other plants, please
contact Mike Stollings at 775-453-1406 or Stollings3@msn.com. May 13th will be Rose Bush Sunday!
With just a few hours a week, the outside of the church
will be extra beautiful and ready for festival time.
However, your help is needed!!
Check out our work-party pictures on page 6.

ALTHOUGH IT IS ONLY MAY,
our Greek Festival will be here
before you know it! Planning and
2012
work has already begun. In the
operations area, I’ve already
started reserving the tents,
entertainment and everything we
need to ensure a successful
Festival. AND the kitchen is already busy with yummy food
preparation.
However, I’m writing to ask for your help! I DESPERATELY NEED
SOMEONE TO STEP UP AND BE THE SILENT AUCTION CHAIRMAN. This is a very important part of our Festival. The Silent Auction
results in pure profit for our church. Someone will need to step up and
volunteer their time and talent for this endeavor... could it be you?
Perhaps you are not able to volunteer to be the Chairman? You
can still help with the Silent Auction! We can all try to solicit our
friends and merchants in the community for donations. Think
about this: If everyone in our parish were to get even one item, it
would ensure that our Silent Auction is as profitable as it should
be. Please consider helping in this way!
If you can volunteer in other areas, please let me know. I’m
currently trying to confirm booth chairmen for all of our areas,
but every year, we need people to step up and take leadership
roles. Remember, a successful Festival requires everyone to take
on a role! We will have a Greek Festival kick-off meeting some time
this month. Please look for the date and time in your e-mail and in the
weekly Bulletin.
I am looking forward to working with everyone again this year.
TOGETHER LET’S MAKE THIS YEARS’ FESTIVAL THE BEST ONE

Into Hell and Out Again
In this Byzantine-inflected icon
of the Resurrection, the murdered Christ
is still in Hell, the chief issue being
that this Resurrection is of our agéd parents
and all their poor relations. We find Him
as we might expect, radiant
in spotless white, standing straight, but leaning back
against the weight of lifting them.
Long tradition has Him standing upon two
crossed boards--the very gates of Hell--and He,
by standing thus, has undone Death by Death,
we say, and saying nearly apprehend.

refers to the Lord's death but in this gospel it is also taken to include - on the resurrection side - the appearances of
Christ, the gift of the Holy Spirit and the Ascension. The events are not separated out chronologically (as in St. Luke's
Gospel) but rather telescoped together in the Paschal period.
Now the glory from the Father belongs to Christ ... but not to Christ alone. Listen to St. Paul …
18
But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from
glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord. [2 Corinthians 3:18]
.. and the definitive text comes from St. Peter who himself had witnessed the Lord glory before ... on the Mount of the
Transfiguration.
4
by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine
nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. [2 Peter 1:4]
Here then is the neglected truth, arguably the most important truth about salvation for it speaks of the goal of our
Christian lives: our glorification in Christ, i.e., our own ascension. Sometimes this is called "theosis" in the Orthodox
Church or deification. St. Athanasius said that "God became Man so that man might become god." In this we do not
become God by a change in our being but rather we partake of his energies by the power of the Holy Spirit. The Virgin
Mary was the first to ascend, the first to be glorified at her Dormition. We are called to follow her in our own
ascension. We may only do so by the measure of how we repent in this life for it is repentance only that makes us "light
enough" to ascend. †

"Remember that
the Lord is in
every Christian.
When your neighbor comes to you,
always have great
respect for him,
because the Lord
is in him, and often
expresses His will
through him. ' It is
God which works in
you both to will and
to do of His good
pleasure' (Phil.
2:13). Therefore,
do not grudge anything to your
brother, but do
unto him as unto
the Lord; especially as you do not
know in whom the
Lord will come
and visit you; be
impartial to all, be
kind to all, sincere
and hospitable.
Remember that
sometimes God
speaks even
through unbelievers, or disposes
their hearts towards us, as it happened in Egypt
when the Lord
gave Joseph favor
in the sight of the
keeper of the prison. (Gen. 39:21)."
THANK YOU to all that worked on the Holy Week and Pascha flowers. Your generous help made our church look beautiful! Special thank you to Esther Brunswig,

Saint Nicholas Ranch is a Ministry of the Greek Orthodox
Metropolis of San Francisco.
We at St. Nicholas Ranch believe that our Orthodox Christian Faith is "caught, not taught". In other words, Christian
friendship teaches kids more about their faith than any book or class. This Christian friendship is an increasingly rare
thing in the world and becoming harder to find, but easy to find at camp... Campers will get to do in six camp days
what they may not get to do all year: pray with their friends, discuss their faith, create life-long friendships, enjoy
God's natural beauty, experience what it is like to be away from home: all this in a spiritually safe and familiar environment... It is a place to experience Christian joy that will be remembered for a lifetime.
