MESSAGE FROM THE PARISH PRESIDENT
Dear parishioners,
On Sunday, March 17, 2014, I was able to address many of
you who attended the Special General Assembly meeting. The
meeting was cathartic, and several issues
were robustly debated. But in the end, all that
were present resolved to stand together for
the betterment of the St. Nicholas community.
One of the key issues discussed was the financial health of the church. My pledge has
been and will always be the financial transparency of the church’s revenues and expenses. In this issue of the Koinonia, an audited 2013 financial report will be included, as well as the
Plateia’s financials for the parishioners to review and ask questions about.
Our treasurer, Popi Paragios, and assistant treasurer,
Emmanuel Diacogianis, have been working diligently to put into
place the proper financial controls to ensure that every bank account under the church’s federal tax identification number is recorded in the parish’s financial system and is audited.
This is a monumental task, but one that both individuals are
ferociously accomplishing. Again, I strongly believe that only by
being completely open and transparent regarding all matters of
the church will we, the parishioners, begin to trust and invest our
time, talent, and treasure once more.
My second pledge is that all church business will be conducted
in accordance with the Uniform Parish Regulations as set forth
by the Archdiocese. If you are not familiar with the regulations,
you may read them online (http://www.goarch.org/archdiocese/
parishcouncil/parishcouncil) or request a copy from the church
secretary.
My third pledge is that I will strive to improve communication within our church. But we can no longer be territorial about
areas of responsibilities. Instead, we must allow others to help
and accept their help graciously and lovingly, as well as listen
with an open mind to differing and challenging opinions. Together, we must govern with love, respect, and care. We do not
have to like one another, but we MUST TREAT EACH OTHER
WITH RESPECT.
Lastly, since my election to the Parish Council Board in December 2010, I have found all the members of the Parish Council
board to be hardworking individuals and genuinely concerned
about the welfare of the church. It is my hope that in our daily
dealings with one another we will conduct ourselves in a respectful manner and work together as a unified community. Thank
you.
In Christ,
Demos Anastasiades, Parish Council President

PARISH COUNCIL RE-ELECTION NOTICE
Dear Members of the Saint Nicholas Parish:
We are in receipt of a letter from His Eminence Metropolitan Evangelos of New Jersey dated March 5, 2014
stating that the December 1, 2013 elections have been deemed invalid and has instructed the Election Committee to
hold the re-election of the parish council. The reason given for the elections being deemed invalid is that our Parish Bylaws do not provide for absentee balloting. Therefore, NO ABSENTEE BALLOTS will be allowed. The date for the
re-election has been set for Sunday, APRIL 6, 2014 to be held in the Ladies Philoptochos Room. Elections will be held
immediately after the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy and will end promptly at 3:00 p.m. The number of positions to
be filled remains the same. The five (5) candidates receiving the highest number of votes will serve a three (3) year term
and the next two (2) receiving the highest votes will serve a two (2) year term.
This plan will bring the term of offices back on schedule with five (5) council members being elected each year
for a three (3) year term.
The candidates are listed below in alphabetical order:
1. Demos Anastasiades
2. George Gus Diacoloukas
3. William Fakas
4. Jason Filippou
5. Gus Karagianopoulos
6. Eleni Stakias Kostakis
7. Frank Mitsos
Two candidates, Vasileki (Vaso) Dimidis Karanikolis and Steve Tsakalas, have submitted requests to be
removed from the list of candidates.
All members in good standing are urged to come and vote. The Uniform Parish Regulations of the
Archdiocese state that:
1. In order to vote, a member must be current in his/her Stewardship commitment for the year which the elections
were originally held (2013). A parishioner in good standing and duly enrolled in the Parish Record but
delinquent in his/her Parish stewardship obligation for 2013 may vote in the elections by meeting his/her
stewardship obligation prior to the elections. Submission of a 2014 Stewardship card is not required for
this re-election since the election was originally held in 2013.
2. In order for a new member to vote, he/or she must be a registered member of the Parish for
at least three (3) months prior to the elections.
3. A voter must be baptized or chrismated in the Greek Orthodox Church.
Please make every effort to vote.
Sincerely,
Rev. Fr. Michael L. Pastrikos, Parish Priest
The Election Committee Members:
Efthimia Atsidis
Athena (Tina) Harris
Patricia Topouzoglou

Greektown CDC
A message from Colonel John E. Gavrilis, CEO
As spring approaches, it is time to spruce up our community.
Please sweep and clear your curb and alley of trash. The Greektown
CDC will be sponsoring community cleanups in the coming months,
and we will be looking for volunteers. It’s your neighborhood-let’s
make it shine.
The Johns Hopkins Bayview Sustainability Committee is holding a
community cleanup in Greektown on Tuesday, April 22, 2014,
10am-2pm. So mark your calendars, and spread the word! Many
volunteers are needed to do some Spring Cleaning of our neighborhood streets. For more information, contact John Long at 410-5502308 or jlong19@jhmi.edu.
Job Opportunity: Director of Development. The Greektown
CDC is looking to hire an individual with experience in community
organizing, economic development, and grant writing. Preferred
qualifications are a college degree, residence in Greektown, and
good writing skills. Salary is commensurate with qualifications. If
you are interested, send a brief two-page resume with the subject
line “Job Resume” to greektowncdc@aol.com.
Pemco follow-up: The Greektown CDC coordinated a meeting
with Greektown stakeholders on March 10, 2014, at the St. Nicholas Church. A group of developers made their presentation regarding possible development options at the Pemco site. We will be
meeting with the leadership of the Greektown community to decide
on the best option for our community. More information to follow.
Know someone looking to buy a home? Live Baltimore’s Buying into Baltimore will be Saturday, April 12, 2014, at the Baltimore
Polytechnic Institute (1400 W. Cold Spring Lane, Baltimore, MD,
21209), 9am-1pm. Opportunities may still exist to take advantage
of Healthy Neighborhoods low-interest loans and other incentives
for home purchases or rehab loans in Greektown. Please review the
website first at www.healthyneighborhoods.org to see if you qualify
within our target blocks.
Attention businesses! The mayor’s office is looking for support
for the YouthWorks summer job program. No matter how many
YouthWorks staffers join your business this summer, it will not cost
you one cent. The program is fully funded; you just need to supervise and mentor. For more information, call 410-396-JOBS (5627)
or visit www.baltimorecity.gov/hireoneyouth. Call before April 21
to participate.
Congratulations to the chairpersons and all the volunteers who
helped with the Greek Independence Day Parade. It was a great
event, and we look forward to next year’s!
We encourage all of our residents to dial 911 immediately when
witnessing suspicious or criminal activity. Call 311 or submit your
request online at www.baltimorecity.gov; use the “request service”
icon for nonemergencies and to request City services (trash, zoning, liquor board, etc.).

Pastoral Message from Fr. Michael L. Pastrikos
Remember, Pascha Celebrates the
Promise of Life in the Face of Death!
Continued from page 1
drama? Why would God expend all this energy to
come up short in the end? Why would God go to all the trouble
to come to earth and be born of the Virgin Mary and go through
his trials, his Passion, his sufferings, and in the end be humiliated
by crucifixion on the cross?
Why would God go through all this if there were no gift of everlasting life on the other side of the grave? Keeping this in mind,
hopefully we are able to control our senses and let the light of
our Risen Christ shine into our souls and get rid of the old baggage that has hindered our lives for so long. I have come to the
conclusion that I can never repay God for what he has done for
me, but I also realize that what God really wants from each of us
is a simple relationship, a true friendship. He wants us to know
him, and for him to know us.
May you have a blessed Pascha.
Christ is Risen! Truly He is Risen!

JOURNEY OF FAITH
PILGRIMAGE TO THE HOLY LAND,
TURKEY, PONTOS & CONSTANTINOPLE
Led by Reverend Father Michael Pastrikos
of Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Baltimore, Maryland
THE HOLY LAND
Your pilgrimage to the Holy Land will be an unforgettable and spiritually rewarding journey! Visit and venerate
Christendom’s most sacred sites. See where Jesus spent most of his life and performed the many miracles you have
read about in the Bible. Visit the cities of Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Nazareth, Capernaum, and Tiberias! Among the
many sites and churches you will see are the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, the Church of St. Anne and the Pools of
Bethesda, the Tomb of the Virgin Mary, the Prison of Christ (Praitorion), the Church of the Holy Apostles and the
Church of the Transfiguration on Mt. Tabor. Take the cable car up to the Mt. of Temptation Monastery and see the
rock that Jesus actually prayed by. Visit the Church of the Nativity and touch the spot where Christ was born!
Among the other sites you will see are the Church of Tabgha, Cana, the Church of the Annunciation, the Garden of
Agony, the Monastery of St. Gerasimos Iordanitis, Lazarus’ Tomb, Church of St. Elisseos and Zacchaeus Tree.
Take a boat-ride on the Sea of Galilee and experience a spiritual baptism in the River Jordan. Enjoy a private audience with Patriarch Theophilos III (subject to his availability) and attend midnight Liturgy at the Holy Sepulcher.
TURKEY
CONSTANTINOPLE: Our pilgrimage will take us to Constantinople, the heart of Orthodoxy. Visit the seventeenth-century Greek Orthodox Ecumenical Patriarchate. Pray at the St. George Cathedral and venerate the Holy
Relics of St. Gregory the Theologian and St. John Chrysostom. Participate in a private audience with His All Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew (subject to his availability). Visit the most important sites for the Greek
Orthodox in Constantinople: Agia Sophia, the Church of the Holy Savior of Chora, Baloukli Monastery and its
Underground Shrine of Zoodochos Peghe, Topkapi Palace, which houses the relics of St. John the Baptist, Panagia
Blacherna, where the beautiful hymn “Te Ypermacho” was chanted over 1,400 years ago, and the Grand Bazaar.
PONTUS: Visit the area of Pontus, on the shores of Turkey’s Black Sea and in the Pontic Alps, where Greeks once
lived. The Pontic Greeks had a continuous presence in the region of Pontus (modern-day northeastern Turkey),
Georgia, and northeastern Anatolia from at least 700 BC until 1922. Like Armenians, Assyrians, and other Ottoman Greeks, the Greeks of Trapezounta suffered widespread massacres and what is now usually termed ethnic
cleansing at the beginning of the twentieth century, first from the Young Turks and later from Kemalist forces.
Visit the historic monastery of Panagia Soumela near Trapezounta, on the mountains rising up on the south coast
of the Black Sea. In 2010 the Turkish government allowed Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew to preside at the
first historic liturgy there in eighty-eight years. According to tradition, the Monastery of Panagia Soumela was
established in AD 386 by the Athenian monks Barnabas and Sofronios on the steep cliffs of Mount Melas, south of
the city of Trapezounta (Trabzon) and has for sixteen centuries been the symbol of the Hellenism of Pontus.
DATES WILL BE ANNOUNCED SHORTLY!
