Message from Fr. Michael L. Pastrikos, Protopresbyter
Help Us Continue Our Mission by Giving of
Your Time, Talent, and Treasure in Return. As the summer fades, we begin to prepare for
the New Ecclesiastical Year that comes rushing
forward each and every September. As of July
2014, our records show that out of nine hundred
(900) registered Stewards, only five hundred (500)
members have pledged to date. Currently, our
members have pledged two hundred and ninetyfour thousand dollars ($294,000.00) of which one
hundred and sixty-three thousand, three hundred
and sixty-seven dollars ($163,367.00) has been received. This is an amazing accomplishment and it
signals that we are on the right path. But, just
imagine if all of our remaining four hundred (400)
members pledged today , showing their commitment to further our mission of spreading the word
of our Lord, Jesus Christ.
Several times a year, our Stewardship Committee sends a pledge card to our parishioners
asking that you bless our church with your financial support as well as give of your time, and
talent. Having St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox
Church is a wonderful haven for the parishioners
who join me for Divine Liturgy for all the Holy
days and not just on Sundays. I am pleased that
the St. Nicholas Church has always been there to
meet our members and visitors Spiritual
needs. Help us continue our mission by giving of
your Time, Talent, and Treasure in return. Our motto, “A church that is ALIVE needs the
generous sacrificial support of those who love it.
Only a dead church demands no sacrifice,” says it
all. For instance, when an acquaintance asks
you, “What Parish are you from?” Many of us do
not hesitate to say proudly that we are members
of St. Nicholas of Baltimore. But ask yourself, is
that a true statement? “Are you a proud supporting member of the church with your time, talent
and treasure? Do you worship in the church with
your family? Do you volunteer your service to
the church in any capacity? Are you in financial
good standing with the church? Do you answer
the call to serve freely and willingly? Do you
complete a Stewardship Pledge card every year to
support your church through her ministries? If
you have fulfilled all of the above requirements,
then you deserve to be called a faithful “Steward”
of the church.
As St. John Chrysostom wrote, “That family is
the most essential unit of our society” and so is
our religious family at St. Nicholas Church
important. Help us to keep that family spirit
alive within our parish life and community life so
we can all experience the positive and rewarding
aspects of Stewardship. Help us meet our goal of
having 100% of parishioners participating in our
Stewardship Program.
Commit yourself to attend church more often
on Holy Days and Sundays. Commit to making
religious education in your children’s life a priority by bringing your children to Sunday school and
grow in your faith with us by reading the bible and/
or attending Bible Study at St. Nicholas Church.
Our mission in this world is to affirm the importance of the family as a blessed gift of God and
to address the specific needs of families as they try
to live in a very challenging culture and world. As
Orthodox Christians, we know that each and every family needs to be connected to the church—
a place where true relationships with God and one
another are nurtured and sustained. Thus through
our current Stewardship program, we are working
harder this year to bring more aspects of our faith
into the home and bring more families into the
Church.
I praise the Lord, that our Church is celebrating its 60th Anniversary this December,
2014. Sixty years is an amazing accomplishment
and a testament to our devoted parishioners to
keep our church open during these challenging
times, where on a daily basis Christians are being
martyred in Middle East and our faith tested at
home.
Work with us to restore our church to its original glory. Let us break down the church doors
with our enthusiasm to volunteer our services in
any capacity, to help our community grow and
prosper. Let your pride and love for St. Nicholas
Church show on our sleeve.
May the Lord continue to bless our Community
and our wonderful Parishioners with the abundance of health and prosperity.
With Love in Christ, Fr. Michael L. Pastrikos,
Protopresbyter

MESSAGE FROM THE
PARISH PRESIDENT
MHNYMA TOY
¶ƒO∂¢ƒOÀ ∆∏™
∫Oπ¡O∆∏∆∞™
Welcome back from your summer vacations. We are gearing
up for the start of many activities that begin again in the Fall. We
have identified several areas in the church and its community
buildings that require repair, renovation and
replacement. Many items have been put on
the back burner when other more critical
conditions required immediate attention.
As we celebrate Saint Nicholas’ 60th Anniversary , it is time that we take steps toward remedying these items that need attention. With that in mind, we are asking that
each parishioner and organization to consider donating toward these areas. We have
listed several opportunities that with your
help, whether it is financial or donate services or equipment, we
can update the church and its facilities.
We have listed some items and the estimated cost that we
would like you to consider:

COMMUNITY NEWS
A MESSAGE FROM THE STEWARDSHIP
COMMITTEE:
As summer vacations come to an end, we welcome the Beginning of the Ecclesiastical Year which arrives every September 1st. Unlike New Year which marks the beginning of the calendar year, the Ecclesiastical New Year is when the Church begins its cycle of spiritual events and bible readings. Just as many
of us make our New Year resolutions, I would like to propose a
few Ecclesiastical New Year resolutions—
ñ Submit your 2014 Stewardship pledge card
Several times a year, our Stewardship Committee sends out a
pledge card to our parishioners asking for their
support. However, our records show that as of July 2014, about
five hundred (500) out of the approximately nine hundred (900)
registered Stewards have pledged to date. I would like to thank
the Stewardship Committee members for their work in increasing the number of stewards and every steward who has faithfully
pledged so far this year. We encourage those who have not yet
pledged to come forth and submit their stewardship card
ñ Complete your 2014 Stewardship pledge
Currently, our members have pledged $294,000 of which
$163,367 has been received, leaving a balance of $130,633 left
unpaid. Have you forgotten to submit your remaining
balance? Please make every effort to fulfill your 2014 pledge.
ñ Dedicate time and talent to the Church
There are many areas which are available to each steward
within the church and its programs. Do you want to see progress
continue in our community? Consider running for the Parish
Council! Do you love to sing praises to the Lord? Come tryout
for the Church choir! Do you have writing skills? Offer your
services to the Koinonia staff! Do you love teaching others
about the Lord? Contact me or one of the Sunday School Directors about becoming a teacher or aide! Do you love to cook or
set up table arrangements? The Plateia is always in need of
help! Do you love helping the poor? Philoptochos is the place
for you! Do you have talent with using tools and making
repairs? The church building is in need of maintenance, repairs,
and replacements!
There are many other areas that will fit everyone’s talents.
ñ Attend church services and other religious
programs more frequently
Our beloved Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church has been
a sanctuary for the parishioners who join me for Divine Liturgy
for Sunday as well as for weekday services. Where else can
people go to meet their spiritual need—Saint Nicholas Church is
always available. Commit yourself to attend church more
often. Commit yourself to bring your children to Greek School
and Sunday School. Make it a priority to bring your children to
Sunday school where they will learn to grow in our faith. Read
the bible either alone or with your family. Join the Bible Study
group at Saint Nicholas Church. We have many opportunities
for everyone!
ñ Partake of the Holy Sacraments
Holy Communion is not only meant to be received during
Holy Lent and on church holidays. Every Sunday at the Divine
Liturgy, all who are baptized in the Greek Orthodox Church are
welcome to receive the Blood and Body of Christ. If you have
any questions regarding what is required to prepare for Holy
Communion, please contact Father Michael. Confession is an-

other sacrament that can be requested at any time by calling me. Let’s make this New Ecclesiastical New Year a year of dedicating more time and love to our beloved Saint Nicholas
Church. May the Lord continue to bless our Community and our
wonderful parishioners with the abundance of health and prosperity.

RAISING TOMORROW’S SAINTS!
SUNDAY SCHOOL NEWS
The purpose of Sunday School is to teach our children how to
live their Orthodox faith. By teaching them about the life of
Christ, we give them the foundation to live Christian lives, to go
out into the world and share their faith and do good works. We
encourage our children not only to learn about our faith in the
classroom, but in their homes as well. Giving your child a strong
spiritual foundation is priceless.
The Sunday School welcomes children as young as 3 years old
in our nursery and offers classes from pre-school through high
school. Registration for the 2014-2015 Sunday School year will
begin on Sunday, September 7th and 14th in the Small Hall after
church services. Registration fee is $10 per child which helps to
defer the cost of books and materials. Sunday school classes for
the coming school year will start on Sunday, September 21st .
On Sunday, September 7th after registration, all Sunday
School teachers and aides are asked to stay for a meeting. We
will discuss class assignments, schedules and programs at that
meeting.
All teachers, aides and students must be in church by 10:00 am
9
∫Oπ¡O∆π∫∞ ¡∂A
or earlier and attend Divine Liturgy through the reading of the
Gospel. After Fr. Michael’s sermon, all students will exit the
church and go to their respective classrooms.
If you are interested in helping in the Sunday School as a
teacher, teacher’s aide or office aide, please join us for a meeting in the Small Hall on Sunday, Sept. 7th. If you are unable to
attend the meeting, please visit the Sunday School office and fill
out a volunteer form. Teachers must be at least 20 years of age.
Aides must be a Sunday school graduate in good standing. If an
aide is under 20, they must be approved by the Sunday school
directors.
Won’t you dedicate some of your time on Sundays to volunteer in the Sunday School program and help spread the word of
God to our young students!
May God Bless you and your family as we welcome all of you
back to church and to another Sunday School year. Again, Sunday school classes will begin on September 21st.
Thank you, The Sunday School Volunteer Staff
GOYA NEWS
Welcome Back Everyone!! We hope you had a great summer.
We are excited to start the year with our Annual Basketball
Tournament. It will be held on Saturday, October 4th and Sunday, October 5th, at The Park School of Baltimore, located at
2425 Old Court Road, Baltimore, Md. 21208. We encourage all
of our parishioners to attend the festivities and support our
GOYANs.
GOYA is a way for the youth of our church to come together
and experience the Holy Orthodox Faith through worship, fellowship, service and fun events. Here are some of the ways we
give back:
ñ Help during the neighborhood cleanup
ñ Visit Kennedy Krieger
ñ Make pillows for breast cancer patients
ñ Fill shoe boxes with goodies for children less fortunate (part
of Operation Christmas Child)
Our first meeting this year was held on Monday, August 25,
2014. If you were not able to attend, it is not too late to still join.
We welcome all youths entering the 7th grade, between the ages
of 12 years old to 18 years (current high school students) to join
the St. Nicholas GOYA program. Parents are welcome to attend
our meetings so they may become familiar and learn about this
youth program. Registration forms are available on our church’s
website at www.stnicholasmd.org, under the category of ministries.
Please complete all the forms which may be found under the
heading “membership” on the website and give them to GOYA
advisor, Patricia Topouzoglou or Mia Atsidis on Sunday after
the Divine Liturgy, along with the registration dues which are
$25.00 per child.
Also, on Sunday, August 24th, our new officers were sworn in
and they are ready to begin a great year of service.
We are looking forward to another great year!!!
Thank you. The St. Nicholas GOYA Advisors

A message from Colonel John E. Gavrilis, CEO
Through the efforts of the Greektown CDC the green area
around our gateway sign and the tree beds along Eastern Avenue
were trimmed and weeds removed. Additionally, through our
efforts, the City responded to remove the unsightly weeds, some
over two feet tall, along the 500-800 blocks of Quail Street and
throughout the Underpass.
The National Night Out, August 5, 2014, hosted by the
Greektown CDC was a great success. This event is a stand
against crime thru unity. Many neighbors, children, elected officials and police representatives attended. The children received
school supplies and other fun items. We thank Greektown Business Alliance, Mrs. Gloria Hertzfelt, our neighbors and the East
Baltimore Church of God volunteers who helped make this event

such a success. We want to thank Councilman Jim Kraft and
Delegate Luke Clippinger who attended. The Governor of Maryland issued a Proclamation to the Greektown CDC for its effort
in supporting the National Night Out.
Officer Todd Brown, our neighborhood foot officer has transferred out of the Southeastern District. We thank Officer Todd
Brown for his service to our community and wish him well!! We
would like to welcome Officer Juan Minaya as our new foot officer. We look forward to working together to keep Greektown
as one of the safest communities in the City.
The Greektown CDC has represented the community at several Liquor Board Hearings. Based on the community’s position the following action was taken: the re-opening of Latin
Quarters, 646 Newkirk, was opposed. The liquor board agreed
with our position. We supported the transfer of ownership for
4701 Eastern Avenue, Asadito Lounge and the Liquor Board
agreed. The business has been a good partner to the community.
Also, the owners have invested in the restaurant with an upgraded kitchen and menu – we wish them the best!
Safety awareness tip – please keep valuables out of view and
hidden in your car.
We remind all residents to dial 911 immediately when witnessing any illegal activity including loitering and 311 to report
any sanitation, zoning or other minor violations.
Also, use Metro Crime Stoppers to help protect our community
by reporting crime anonymously, 1-866-756-2587 or text information to 274637.

THANK YOU!
I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to all of you, who showed your support and love during the
difficult moments addressing my health challenges. Your cards, your flowers, your fruit baskets, your phone calls and
your concern, moved and delighted me at the same time. I felt as though someone, other my immediate family, cares for
me. No one can understand this feeling, unless you put yourself in my place.
Now with the blessings and protection of our Lord and of our beloved Saint Nicholas, who I have served for
33 consecutive years, my health is restored.
Thanks to your wishes and prayers, I’m back with you, to continue from where I left off. I wish to every one
of you, above all, HEALTH, and family happiness. May God bless you and protect you and yours.
With all my love, Maria Salpeas
