The earthquake: simple experiments for a complex phenomenon
Introduction
Schools have a fundamental role to broaden the understanding of
earthquake hazards and to build the awareness in the community. Recent
earthquakes in Italy, and around the world, have clearly demonstrated
that the poor perception of the natural hazards diminishes the
effectiveness of the efforts towards the mitigation of seismic risk. Since
years the Seismology’s department of OGS is involved in education
projects and public activities to raise awareness of education on
earthquake.
.
Students under the guidance of their teachers, can exploit different class activities on the earthquake issues. Some examples are given in the
following.
How the Earth works?
Recording an earthquake
Shaking effects on a building
Bricks to build simple
structures or more
complicated shaking table
From basic seismograph to digital professional instrumentation
Awareness of living in
an seismic prone area
is the first step
towards the risk
mitigation.
.
Earthquake casualties since1900 in Italy
Earth Interior, stick-slip and tsunami
explained to kids.
Are people aware about earthquake ?
Physics behind the earthquake
Local properties of terrain influence the
ground motion. Simple demonstration
and measuerements of seismic noise
help to explain the phenomenon.
