TEACHING ACTIVITY (UNDER-GRADUATE, POST-GRADUATE, EXECUTIVE)
My under-graduate, post-graduate and executive teaching has been focused on the field of strategy,
strategic management and marketing with an average annual teaching load of 90-100 hours since the
moment I was recruited as an Assistant Professor. The very first class I was in charge of, even before
getting a position as an Assistant Professor at the University of Bologna has been Creative Industry for
the Graduate Degree in Innovation and Organization of Cultural and Arts at the University of
Bologna. Since the AY 2006/07 I have annually taught the aforementioned class, which has
undergone changes in terms of both denomination (to “Creative Industries” and later to “Business
Models in Creative Industries”) and contents, with an increasing focus on the evolution of business
models in the fast changing web-based creative industries and media.
Since the AY 2007/08, with the official recruiting from the School (Facoltà) of Economic in
Rimini, I was officially in charge of teaching classes related to both strategy and marketing with a
particular focus on the tourism sector, both for under-graduate and post-graduate students. As far as
under-graduate teaching is concerned, the School of Economics in Rimini gave me the responsibility
for teaching classes such as Marketing for the Corso di Laurea in Economia dei Mercati e dei Sistemi

Curriculum Vitae – Marcello M. Mariani
RESEARCH AREAS AND INTERESTS
I developed my research around five major areas which are described below.
1. Inter-firm and inter-organizational relationships. Since when I was writing my Ph.D. thesis, I have
conducted research on cooperation, collaboration and coordination across the different stages o fan
inter-organizational relationship lifecycle, especially in creative and cultural industries and in the
tourism sector. Furthermore, I have investigated inter-firm relationships where firms simultaneously
compete and cooperate (co-opetitive interorganizational relationships): in particular I have analyzed
the processes leading to the formation of coopetitive strategies in contexts originally characterized by
competition. Finally I have studied a particular set of inter-organizational dynamics labelled as publicprivate partnerships (PPPs).
2. New Business Models in the services sector, with a specific emphasis on creative industries, media
and the tourism sector. Within this increasingly important research stream, given the crucial role that
creative and cultural industries, media and tourism are playing in advanced economies, I focused on
economic, strategic and marketing behaviours of relevant actors (individuals and/or
organizations) active in the aforementioned industries, paying attention to innovation management
(both technological and organizational innovation, but also creative-artistic-aesthetic innovation) and
to new emergent Business Models. With reference to my expertise in creative industries (i.e.,
performing arts, movie sector, theme parks) and media, I already got a number of job offers from
prestigious academic institutions such as the Berklee College of Music, Boston, USA, in addition to a
number of collaboration proposals from such publishers as Routledge London and Palgrave
MacMillan New York. The latter one has showed an interest in recruiting me for a monographic
volume on creative industries. Due to my knowledge and expertise of the sector, I have been included
in the European Expert Network on Culture (EENC).
3. Performance measurement. This research theme has been investigated with reference to the
methodological problems related to the performance measurement of knowledge intensive and
creative sectors. More specifically, the attributes of Intellectual Capital (Human, Structural and
Relational Capital) have been connected with different dimensions of performance (i.e., commercial,
financial, aesthetic/artistic) in sectors such as creative and cultural industries and media.
4. Privatization processes. A number of privatization and outsourcing processes have been investigated,
for sectors which until some time ago where integrated into the public administration. In more detail,
the organization and division of labour as well as HRM in creative and cultural industries have been
tackled (with a specific emphasis on the performing arts).
5. Management, strategy and marketing in the tourism sector. This wide research field was developed
as a consequence of my engagement with tourism related subjects at the School of Economics,
Management and Statistics of Rimini. In particular I have dealt with aspects related to strategic
management, marketing and branding for tourism destination and tourism companies and activities,
revenue management in the hospitality sector and in air transportation, MICE (meetings, incentives,
conventions and exhibitions) management, application of ICTs in tourism (e-Tourism). I have
focused my analyses on the measurement of customer satisfaction for inbound Russian tourists into
Italy, with an emphasis on shopping tourism for luxury brands (and analysis of managerial
implications for tour operators and travel agents). My engagement with tourism research has pushed
me to initiate and plan ex novo the EIASM International Conference on Tourism and to accept
editorial proposals from Palgrave MacMillan New York for which I am authoring and editing two
volumes on tourism management and marketing.
I am currently involved in a National Research Project in the framework of “Progetto di Rilevante
Interesse Nazionale” (PRIN) titled “Collaboration and Combination: A Relational Analysis of
10
Curriculum Vitae – Marcello M. Mariani
Creativity in the Arts and Sciences” which tries to capture the impact of collaboration and
combination of capabilities on the multidimensional performance of creative and scientific sectors.
Simultaneously I am involved in a Tempus IV Program funded by the Commission of the European
Union. The Program is meant to support the development and harmonization of master programs
(with attention to teaching offer, syllabi and curricula) in the Western Balkans, in order to train
managers in the tourism, creative and cultural sectors and endow them with skills and competences
allowing them to be equipped while facing international challenges.
Below I illustrate with more detail the research projects I am currently and have been involved in and
further the list of my publications and the articles under review.
