MAIN POSITIONS AND COLLABORATIONS:
1. I entered the Dental School of the ‘G. D’Annunzio’ University of Chieti in 1995 and obtained my
degree in Dentistry in November 2000. In the 4th year of my course, I started to work in the
laboratories of the Department. In particular, I began in the biochemical laboratory of Prof. Giuseppe
Spoto, where my research was mainly focused on the enzymatic activities in inflamed dental pulp
and in gingival crevicular fluid.
2. After I received my degree in Dentistry, I remained as a Research Fellow in the Department of Oral
Sciences for seven months, before spending some months on a Research Fellowship at the
‘Consorzio Mario Negri Sud’ Institute. Then, from May 2002 to January 2004, I had a position as a
Research Fellow in the same Department of Oral Sciences (at the ‘G. D’Annunzio’ University).
3. Subsequently, in the period from August 2005 to December 2008, I returned to the ‘Consorzio Mario
Negri Sud’ Institute and entered the PhD Programme in ‘Life Sciences’. In particular, I worked in the
Unit of Protein Sorting and Biogenesis, headed by Dr Roman Polishchuk, which was part of the
Laboratory of Membrane Traffic of Dr Alberto Luini (who was the Head of the Department of Cell
Biology and Oncology at that time). While the ‘Consorzio Mario Negri Sud’ Institute was a
sponsoring establishment, the University holding the PhD programme was the Open University, UK,
and according to its regulations, Prof. Christopher Hawes (Research School of Biological and
Molecular Sciences, Oxford Brookes University, Oxford, UK) was my English Supervisor.
4. Since the completion of my PhD, from January 2009, I have been in the School of Dentistry at the
University of Trieste where I got my Master of Science Degree in Orthodontics. At present, I hold a
post-doctoral position within the Department of Medical, Surgical and Health Sciences, headed by
Prof. Roberto Di Lenarda, within the same University of Trieste. In general, most of my current
research activity is into the orthodontic field. At the same time and since 2004, I have been involved
in a private dental practice in Orthodontics.
5. Finally, until 2010 I kept some collaborations with my former Department of Oral Sciences (‘G.
D’Annunzio’ University) and Department of Cell Biology and Oncology (now known as ‘Cellular and
Translational Pharmacology’) which is limited to statistical advice and morphometric analyses.

MAIN PAST AND PRESENT ACTIVITIES ACCORDING TO EACH FIELD:
(please refer to publication list ordered by topic; underlined, most important research activities)
A. Biomedical and clinical studies in Orthodontics
I started with studies into the modifications of gingival crevicular fluid during orthodontic treatment. In
particular, I focused on modifications to its enzymatic activity during tooth movement. However, my main
activities at present are related to biomarkers of skeletal maturation in growing subjects. At present, reliable
methods of diagnosis rely on radiographical methods that are thus invasive to the patients, while noninvasive methods would be preferable. In this regard, we have initially demonstrated that the gingival
crevicular fluid composition, and in particular its alkaline phosphatase activity, is sensitive to systemic growth,
and are investigating the possibilities of its use as a non-invasive biomarker for skeletal maturation. More
research is in progress to further define the use and reliability of this biomarker. Apart from these
biochemical investigations, I have also been investigating the diagnostic performance of other morphological
indices of skeletal maturity, such as dental maturation. At present, investigations on the biochemical or
morphological of skeletal maturation represent my main research activity.
B. Other clinical studies
As a second research line, I have investigated the relationships between dental occlusion/TMJ disorders and
body posture, as recorded through static posturography. The results of these studies, which do not support
aspects of previously published data, showed no detectable correlations. More recently, I have been involved
in systematic reviews of the topic. According to our results, detectable correlations do exist, but they would
be of little or no clinical relevance, even when considering patients with temporomandibular disorders.
C. Epidemiological studies
In 2003, I was the main assessor for the orthodontic part of the Italian OHSAR Survey, in which about 1,200
mixed dentition children were monitored for their malocclusal traits. As with the caries part of this project,
this is to date among the most comprehensive surveys performed in Italian children. We described the
prevalence of several malocclusal traits in Italian mixed-dentition children, along with their main correlations.
This was achieved using the dental class (canine or molar) as dependent variable, and then correlating all of
the other traits in a multivariate model.
D. Biological Studies
My biological studies were mainly performed during my two periods at the Consorzio Mario Negri Sud
(CMNS) Institute. In the first, short-terms stay, from June 2001-April 2002, I was initially working under the
direct supervision of Dr Maria Di Girolamo within the projects investigating the role and regulation of
endogenous mono-ADP-ribosylation of the heterotrimeric G protein β subunit. At my second and longer
period at the CMNS from 2004 to 2008, I was involved in the PhD Programme project that was an
investigation into the morphological features relating to intra-Golgi transport, as revealed through a novel
technique known as ultra-high resolution laser scanning microscopy (4Pi-microscopy). This project was a
collaboration between the CMNS and the Department of NanoBiophotonics at the Max-Planck Institute for
Biophysical Chemistry (Göttingen, Germany), headed by Dr Stefan Hell, who is also the developer of 4Pimicroscopy (http://www.4pi.de/). In particular, in collaboration with other researchers, I validated the imaging
acquired by this novel instrument by developing the new process that we call ‘correlative 4Pi-electron
microscopy’ (4Pi-CLEM). Here, the very same cell structures seen under 4Pi-microsopy can also be found at
the electron microscopy level, so that direct comparisons of both of these imaging technologies can be
made. Moreover, the difficulty of obtaining true structural boundaries from complex intensity curves, a
specific problem that has limited the use of fluorescence microscopy for morphometrical analyses, was
overcome by our novel objective image segmentation method, referred as the zero-crossings procedure.
Finally, I have also had collaborations within my former Department of Cell Biology and Oncology which have
led to further co-authorships.

Since 2003, I have had major responsibilities in supervising both undergraduate and postgraduate MS
(Orthodontics) students in the management of their theses. This activity was kept even during my PhD term
when I was primarily working at the CMNS Institute outside the Dental School. To date, a total of over 30
undergraduate or postgraduate students have been fully supervised in their research activities, and thesis
writing and dissertation. My supervision related to studies into the orthodontic or periodontal fields, and
most of these theses have been published on international peer-reviewed journals. At present, about 2
undergraduate and 2 postgraduate dental students per year at the University of Trieste are under my
supervision.
G. Clinical activities
My clinical activities are all in orthodontics. Since January 2004, I have been working ‘freelance’ in the
orthodontic field. In particular, I am working in private officers in Pescara and Pordenone (Italy). At present,
about 200 patients have undergone or are undergoing my treatments. Overall, since the beginning in 2004,
about 30% of my time has been spent in this clinical activity (about 5%-10% during my PhD up to about 60%
at present). My clinical activity includes interceptive and dentofacial orthopedics, as well as full fixed
appliance therapies. I also manage adult patients undergoing combined orthodontic treatment combined to
and maxillo-facial surgery.
H. Reviewer activities
Since 2003, I have been a reviewer for the Angle Orthodontist, the American Journal of Orthodontics and
Dentofacial Orthopedics, Journal of Oral Rehabilitation and European Journal of Oral Sciences. In particular, I
have been asked to review manuscripts related to biological aspects of orthodontic tooth movement, and to
the correlations between dental occlusion and posture. In 2009, I also joined the Editorial Board of the
American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics.
I. Assistant Editor activities
Since January 2011 until beginning 2013, I have been an Assistant Editor of Progress in Orthodontics, the
official journal of the Mediterranean Integrated Orthodontic Project (MIOP), which was founded in 2000 by
the Italian Society of Orthodontics. Progress in Orthodontics at that time present edited by Dr Lorenzo
Franchi.
