Welcome Address We are honoured and pleased to welcome over 200 participants and guests from eighteen different Countries, at the International Symposium on the European outbreak of Xylella fastidiosa in olive, held in Apulia, Italy. The Scientific Committee with the collaboration on the invited speakers have built a scientific program which will provide an in depth and updated overview on this harmful pathogen, and illustrate the current situation in the outbreak area of Apulia. The researchers directly involved in the ongoing research activities on this new emerging threat will share, the knowledge and the data so far gathered, with the international scientific community and critically discuss the future steps and efforts to boost the ongoing research programs. As a complement to the core scientific program, the National and the Regional Plant Health Services have organized a specific session for the presentation and discussion of the phytosanitary and legislative measures to be adopted and implemented. The Symposium offers, with the field trip, a unique chance to visit the diseased area and have a look of the incidence and severity of the symptoms. We are delighted to invite a broad scientific community to this symposium. We very much hope that you will share our enthusiasm for this Symposium and we thank everybody who have decided to join us in this beautiful area. When viewed from the sea, Gallipoli‟s white skyline reveals itself in all of its oriental beauty, resembling a village of the Cyclades islands. The old town, perched on a limestone islet, is connected to the mainland via an arched bridge. The walls, ramparts and towers that once defended the city from foreign raiders, now provide shelter from the rough sea and confer the city a special charm that takes visitors back in time. Don‟t miss to visit the baroque cathedral dedicated to Saint Agatha and the Hellenistic fountain close to the bridge, rich in bas-reliefs depicting scenes from Greek mythology, and the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Canneto. The city‟s fascination adds to its beautiful nature, offering long beaches of very fine white sand that are mostly cherished by family vacationers and water sports fans. 8 WORKSHOP LOCATION: LOCOROTONDO (BARI) The village is located in Valle d‟Itria and you can enjoy the typical rural landscape from various sight of the historic centre with his small “trulli” locally called “casedde” and farms. A center of concentric streets, low houses with the typical pointed roof and whitewashed, originally built to fight against the sun and the pestilence, and then become the symbol of the country, the “cummerse“. Entering at the city centre by Napoli‟s door, you are immediately greeted by an efficient tourist information service, where you can find all the information materials, in various languages, to better organize your visit. Then you go in the nice built-up area made pleasant by the open spaces and by the white houses with main entrance and railings profiles stone. The food and wine is strongly linked to the local tradition: the white wine Locorotondo DOC and oil, and dishes such as orecchiette with broccoli and the mashed fava beans with wild chicory. In the midway between Cisterino and Alberobello, three are the stage unmissable (all certified with the Orange flag by Touring Club Italiano) a cultural and culinary excellence itinerary through the Itria valley. 9 PROGRAMME SCHEDULE SYMPOSIUM SESSIONS Monday, 20th October 17:00-19:00 REGISTRATION AND POSTER HANGING PROCEDURES 19:00-21:00 WELCOME RECEPTION AT COSTA BRADA RESORT, GALLIPOLI (LECCE) Tuesday, 21st October 08:30-09:00 REGISTRATION AND POSTER HANGING PROCEDURES 09:00-09:30 WELCOME G.
