New Kriwan INT69FRYL protection module
on Frascold screw compressors
Frascold is pleased to inform all customers that, starting from the beginning of June 2014, a new INT69 FRYL® Diagnose
for screw compressors protection module with additional features will become the new standard delivery.
The new module will replace the current INT69 FRY, guaranteeing the same main functions and keeping unchanged the
fixing points. Furthermore additional protections and diagnostic tools have been implemented in order to improve the reliability and extend the service life of a screw compressor system.
On the INT69 FRYL® Diagnose each protection device listed here below has its dedicated connection port (please refer
to the wiring diagram on page 4):
•
Motor PTC thermistors (1, 2)
•
Oil (discharge) temperature sensor (3, 4)
•
Oil level switch (5, 6)
•
Oil filter clogging sensor (7, 8)
•
Oil flow switch (9, 10)
However each of those protection devices can be connected directly from the logical controller of the system leaving unchanged on the INT69 FRYL® Diagnose the connections supplied with a bridge (as shown in the picture of the new device
here below).

This improvement reduces the number of cable connections between the control devices and the electrical panel; consequently the number of the required PLC’s I/O is lowered.
A built-in flashing LED has been added for status display and troubleshooting (for additional information please refer to
Kriwan’s data sheet). Moreover a connection for a remote reset button is now available.

Protection functions
In response to compressor malfunctions, the device identifies causes and enables protective functions as detailed below:
1. Phase monitoring - Phase monitoring is activated 1 second after the motor start.
•
Phase sequence: it is monitored for 5 seconds; in case of incorrect phase sequence the compressor is switched
off and a manual reset is needed.
• Phase asymmetry: always monitored until the motor stops; in case up to 3 phase asymmetries happening within
20 minutes the compressor is switched off for 4/6 minutes, then it restarts automatically; in case 4 phase asymmetries happening within 20 minutes the compressor is switched off and a manual reset is needed; in case up to
9 phase asymmetries happening within 24 hours the compressor is switched off for 4/6 minutes, then the error
resets automatically and the compressor can restart; in case 10 phase asymmetries happening within 24 hours the
compressor is switched off and a manual reset is needed.
• Phase failure: if there is a phase failure the compressor is switched off and a manual reset is needed.
• Contactor chatter: in case up to 2 phase failures happening within 1 hour the compressor is switched off for 4/6
minutes, then it can restart; in case 3 phase failures happening within 1 hour the compressor is switched off and
a manual reset is needed.
Phase monitoring is deactivated about 10 seconds after the compressor is switched off.
2. Monitoring of the switching cycles frequency overstepping - In case 3 switch offs happening within
30 seconds the compressor is switched off for 4/6 minutes, then it can restart automatically; in case 10 switch offs
happening within 1 hour the compressor is switched off for 24/36 minutes, then it can restart automatically.
3. Monitoring of oil (or discharge) temperature - Oil temperature, or discharge temperature, is always monitored without any reset delay; the compressor can restart when the temperature returns below the threshold value.
4. Monitoring of motor temperature
•
Static evaluation: the compressor is switched off for 4/6 minutes immediately after the motor temperature reaches
the threshold value, and the alarm resets automatically when the temperature returns below the threshold value.
• Dynamic evaluation: if the motor temperature increases unusually quickly the compressor is switched off even
though the temperature is far below the threshold value; if this happens once within 24 hours the compressor is
switched off for 8/12 minutes, then it restarts automatically; in case of 2 times within 24 hour the compressor is
switched off for 48/72 minutes, then the alarm resets automatically and the compressor can restart; in case this
happens 3 times 24 hours the compressor is switched off and a manual reset is needed.
A short circuit on the motor temperature PTC input contacts leads to a switch off as well.
5. Monitoring of oil level - The compressor is switched off if the contact of the sensor is open for more than 3 sec
onds; a manual reset is needed.
In the case of an application that requires a longer transition time, it has to be managed directly through the logic controller of the system and to be approved by Frascold.
6. Monitoring of oil filter contamination - The compressor is switched off if the contact of the sensor is open
for more than 10 seconds; manual reset is needed.
7. Monitoring of oil flow - It is activated 10 seconds after the compressor starts.
Compressor is switched off if the contact of the sensor remains open for more than 3 seconds; in case this happens up to
2 times within 1 hour the compressor is switched off for 4/6 minutes, then it restarts automatically; in case of 3 times within
1 hour the compressor is switched off and a manual reset is needed. In the case of a very specific application a longer
transition time could be allowed if agreed with Frascold, but has to be managed directly through the logic controller of the
system.

Diagnostics and data storage
In the case of compressor malfunctions, the corresponding error is recorded; the device is also able to record information
about switching on/off cycles and to provide statistics accordingly:
A. Detailed list of the last 20 errors
B. Statistics about start-up of compressor
C. Statistics about compressor running time of each switching ON
D. Statistics about number of switching ON during the last 7 days
E. Statistics about maximum number of switching ON during one hour
Interface
Recorded information can be downloaded from the INT69 FRYL® Diagnose using a serial-USB interface cable (supplied
as accessory) directly connected to the Diagnose Port (DP) and to a USB port on a computer; otherwise via DP-Modbus
gateway with a dedicated cable (both supplied as accessories). Dedicated Kriwan software may be downloaded from the
Kriwan website free of charge enabling the reading of data from the Diagnose.
Replacement
Wiring diagram
In case of replacement of the INT69 FRY with INT69 FRYL® Diagnose, please note that the only changes to be undertaken
in the electrical connections are the connection of the motor PTC thermistors to terminals 1 and 2 and the connection of
the oil temperature sensor to terminals 3 and 4 of the INT69 FRYL® Diagnose device as shown in the wiring diagram here
below.
Delivery
Compressors produced after 01/06/2014 will be delivered equipped with the new device INT69 FRYL® Diagnose.
Prices
No change is being applied to the current price list because of the new features.
