DEDICATION OF THE LATERAN BASILICA
The Dedication of the
Lateran Basilica
"When he was raised
from the dead, his
disciples remembered
that he had said this,
and they came to
believe." Jesus
predicted his
resurrection in today's
Gospel. But it wasn't
until after the disciples
witnessed the miraculous event that they realized what he had
been talking about. At the time, Jesus' words seemed
mysterious, even confusing. Those who heard him
understandably thought his reference to "this temple" was about
the Jewish house of worship. But it wasn't. He was talking about
his body. This only became clear later.
As the saying goes, "hindsight is twenty-twenty." How often do
we find ourselves in the midst of a situation that doesn't make
sense at the time? We question the "meaning" of a sickness, a
lost job, a betrayal, or a disappointment. But then, after time has
passed, we can begin to see it from another angle. In fact, many
times we begin to see how good came out of these tough
situations. St. Paul says, "We know that all things work for good
for those who love God," (Rom 8:28).
Sometimes it's hard to trust in God's promises, especially when
his plan seems mysterious or confusing. But just as the disciples
learned that Jesus knew what he was talking about, we can
believe that too. He tells us that he is "the way and the truth and
the life" (Jn 14:6). Although the way may seem indirect, Jesus'
perspective is bigger than ours. He knows how to lead us to the
fullness of life, in this world and the next. The path may not be
one that we would choose. Even Jesus had to journey through
the cross before his resurrection-the temple of his body was
destroyed before it was rebuilt. But looking back, it's obvious that
God's plans really do work out for the best.

LITTLE CHESTER’S HEAVENLY BARK
A football coach walked into the locker room before a big
game, looked over to his star player and said, “I’m not
supposed to let you play since you failed math, but we
really need you in there. So what I have to do is ask you a
math question, and if you get it right, you can play.” The player agreed,
so the coach looked into his eyes intently and asked, “Ok, now
concentrate hard and tell me the answer to this: “What is two plus two?”
The player thought for a moment and then answered, “4?” Did you say
4?” the coach exclaimed, excited that he had given the right answer.
Suddenly, all the other players on the team began screaming, “Come on
coach, give him another chance!”

Each New Year brings many known and unknown challenges to the local
Church, and we are tasked to share the Light of Faith. This year we are
called to respond to the many needs of our families of our diocese.
Through pastoral, charitable and educational services administered
compassionately to the people throughout the Diocese, each of us can
renew our faith by sharing the light of faith with our neighbor. The Annual
Catholic Appeal is the primary vehicle for raising the necessary funds that
will allow our community to continue to share their gifts with others.
Last year our Parish of St. Francis of Assisi-St. Blaise reached our Pledge
Goal of $60,000. In fact we surpassed our 2013 ACA Goal with a total of
$65,003.90 ! Thanks for your generosity!!!
This year as stated above, our 2014 Parish Goal has been
raised to $65,000. Let us respond to the ACA 2014 with a
giving heart that will surpass last year’s Appeal. I am sure we
can do that. Let us remember that God indeed takes care of
us.
"Dear God, Make me a cheerful giver of all my tithes and offerings. I
chose to receive all of Your promises and blessings as I am obedient to
Your Word. Help me to remember the poor, knowing that I am lending
to You and You will repay. Let me give with an attitude of gratitude
and worship. I have nothing without You and I will take nothing out
with me--only souls. I love to give! Help me to hear the exact amount
and to whom to give of my offerings. In Jesus' name. Amen."
