“NEW YEAR’S GREETING”
“Immeasurable Light and Life.”
At the beginning of the year, I would like to
send you my greetings from Hongwanji, Kyoto.
May we all live our lives cherishing everyday and
reflect that all lives, including my own, are
illuminated and embraced by the light and
compassion of Amida Tathagata.
The restoration of the Hongwanji Founder’s Hall
will soon be completed. In the midst of the cold in
January 1999, following the completion of Rennyo
Shonin’s 500th Memorial Services, the groundbreaking ceremony was conducted. In June of the
same year, the image of Shinran Shonin was moved
from the Founder’s Hall to the Hall of Amida
Buddha. For the ten years since that time, the
restoration work has been carried out without any
serious problems thanks to your generous donations,
public subsidy, and the efforts of many professionals.
Historians describe Shinran Shonin as having
lived in temporary lodgings throughout his life
because he had never built a temple. They may be
correct. The Hongwanji’s Founder’s Hall was not
built because of a request made by Shinran Shonin.
Rather, the structure was erected by the many people
who highly regard him. I have no doubt that they
made great efforts to express their respect and
adoration for him. Constructed in an era when there
was no electricity, they used their ingenuity to make
the best use of natural light and sound. The main
entrance to the hall is on the east side because the
VOLUME 53 - NO. 1
Pure Land is believed to be in the west and it is a
custom for members to hold Buddhist services facing
west. However, it is really impressive to have the
sunlight shining into the Hall during the morning
service at Hongwanji. Moreover, a treasure of
Hongwanji is seeing and hearing Jodo Shinshu
Buddhists from throughout the country who have
gathered in the Founder’s Hall, chanting Shoshinge
with all their heart.
In the Founder’s Hall, I can feel the joy and
sadness of those who have paid homage there for 370
years. You can visit the hall with your friends and
family on an occasion of a Buddhist service, or you
can visit alone and quietly engage in a dialogue with
Master Shinran. Either way is appropriate when
visiting Hongwanji.
It may not be easy for overseas district members
to visit the Hongwanji in Kyoto, but I hope that you
will be able to come to Honzan when you have a
chance to visit Japan. Also, I sincerely hope that you
would have Shinran Shonin and Hongwanji in your
mind while you chant Shoshinge in front of the
Buddhist altar in your home or in front of the image
of Amida Buddha at your local temple.

JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2009
2009 will be a milestone year for the Honpa
Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii because we will be
observing Shinran Shonin’s 750th Memorial
Commemoration and Hawaii Kyodan’s 120th
Anniversary. The process began on January 9, 2005,
when His Eminence Monshu Koshin Ohtani issued
the message on the 750th memorial for Shinran
Shonin. On February 3, 2006, Governor General
Kosho Fujikawa came to Hawaii and presented
Monshu Koshin Ohtani’s message. The Double
Commemoration Committee began planning for this
event and the 96th Legislative Assembly approved
Shinran Shonin’s 750th Memorial Commemoration
and
Hawaii
Kyodan’s
120th
Anniversary
Commemoration Projects in February 2008.
The committees have scheduled many events
and the information has been distributed to your
temple and leaders. These events were planned for
your benefit. I encourage all of you to participate in
the event(s) scheduled for your district. For our
neighbor island sangha, if you were planning a trip to
Honolulu, consider making it in September to
coincide with some of the events.
As we reflect on the western influence on a 120
year old organization let us be grateful for the
teachings of Shinran Shonin and take this
opportunity to renew our commitment in the
international movement of Jodo Shinshu.
2009 will actually be a triple celebration for us
because it also marks the 50th Anniversary of
statehood. It will be a very busy year and we
humbly ask for your continued support, cooperation
and participation. Amidst all of this activity,
however, let us remember the profound teachings of
Shinran Shonin which binds the Sangha as one and
put it into practice in our daily lives.
In Gassho,
Alton H Miyamoto, President
Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii
HAPPY NEW YEAR
At the dawn of the year 2009, may I extend to
you my sincere wishes for the renewed joy and
aspiration for the New Year.
What does the year 2009 means to us? Each and
everyone of you may have your own definition and
aspiration for the new year. This is how I feel. As
Hongwanji member, the year 2009 is not simply the
120th anniversary year of our Kyodan. It is not just
the year that we have set aside to commemorate the
750th memorial year for Shinran Shonin. I look at the
year 2009 to be the year of renewed commitment to
Jodo Shinshu, and setting the direction for the future
of our Kyodan.
By observing the double commemoration, we
have opportunities to reflect on our Nembutsu
teaching in our daily life, and to think of the future of
our beloved Hongwanji in Hawaii.
The teaching of Jodo Shinshu reminds us of who
we are as individuals illuminated and embraced by
the Buddha’s Wisdom and Compassion that
universally surround us. As travelers and seekers of
the Buddha’s way (ondogyo ondobo), we are deeply
aware of our human limitations, but at the same time,
being nurtured in the Light and Life of the
Enlightenment, we are joyfully aware that we have
the inner strength to grow to our ultimate potentiality
as human beings.
The year 2009 promises to be another exciting
year in many respects. I humbly ask you to seek your
way of life in Nembutsu, and walk the path together
in the guidance of Amida Buddha.
In Gassho,
Thomas R. Okano, Bishop

HAWAII KYODAN PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Aloha and best wishes for a happy and peaceful
New Year! As we embark on a commemorative year
that we’ve spent countless hours planning for, I wish
to take this opportunity to thank everyone for your
time and dedication toward this effort. We are truly
grateful for your heartfelt contributions towards the
Double Commemoration Campaign.
MINISTER’S NEW YEAR’S MESSAGE
As we greet the New Year 2009, let me express
my most sincere best wishes to you and your loved
ones for a joyous and meaningful New Year! I
would also like to express my heartfelt gratitude and
appreciation to the Members, Friends, and
Supporters of Moiliili Hongwanji who extended your
support and generosity to the Temple and myself
during the past year.
The White Way is the newsletter of the Moiliili Hongwanji
Mission, 902 University Ave., Honolulu, HI 96826. It is printed

everyone’s support and help in making 2009 a year
to remember for all of us! Once again, Happy New

In gassho,
Rev. Eric Matsumoto/Disciple of

(Continued from page 2)
It is finally 2009 and what a momentous year!
Looking ahead, we have several significant events
that we will be observing as residents of the State of
Hawaii and members of the Honpa Hongwanji
Mission of Hawaii like the 50th Anniversary of
Hawaii’s Statehood in August, Shinran Shonin’s
750th Memorial and our own Hawaii Kyodan’s 120th
Anniversary with Gomonshu Koshin Ohtani and
Lady Noriko Ohtani coming to Hawaii in September,
and Project Dana’s 20th Anniversary in October, and
I am sure many of you are even thinking of traveling
to Japan in May 2011 for Shinran Shonin’s 750th
Memorial and the 14th Buddhist Women’s
Association World Convention.
It is said that a special ability of human beings is
being able to reflect. As we begin the New Year, it
would be an opportune time to reflect on our life.
The Teachings share “Hard is it to attain life as a
human being. Knowing we cannot live forever, thus
how precious the present moment. May we savor
each day.” As we contemplate the myriad events
and activities lying ahead in this New Year, let us not
forget that “Even a journey of one thousand miles
starts with a single step.” As Members, Friends and
Supporters of Moiliili Hongwanji, please do not
forget that along with your financial support, the
temple needs each and everyone’s physical
participation in carrying out its programs and
activities including your coming to Sunday Morning
Services. The significant events of 2009 are like
milestones in this year’s journey and that first step or
single step is your coming to the temple to hear/listen
to the Teachings/Dharma every Sunday. As our 8th
Spiritual Leader Rennyo Shonin said, “The wellbeing of our Jodo Shinshu consists neither of large
congregations nor grand appearances. Even as one
person awakens to Shinjin/Awakened Mind of True
Entrusting (in Amida Buddha), this is true prosperity
in the deepest sense of the word.” The blossoming of
Shinjin in more and more people results in the
prosperity of Jodo Shinshu. May I encourage you,
one and all, to please come to the temple for services
and also ask for your support of other temple
programs and activities.
I close by expressing my appreciation to Mr.
Bert Ogasawara, our Temple President, and the
Board of Directors, all organizations and its leaders,
and the Temple Staff especially Mrs. Jeanne Watari,
who after close to 2 ½ decades of dedication to the
Temple is retiring. In the New Year, may I ask for
THE WHITE WAY
FROM THE TEMPLE PRESIDENT
Aloha and Best Wishes to all for a prosperous
New Year. On behalf of the Board of Directors, we
would like to extend our heartfelt thanks and
gratitude to our many supporting members who
contribute to our activities throughout the year. I
would also like to extend a special thanks to the
Office Administration, Board of Directors,
Committee Chairpersons and volunteers who have
continued to execute the daunting task of maintaining
our Temple, Sangha and Jodo Shinshu faith.
In 2009 Shinran Shonin’s 750th Memorial Service
and the Hawaii Kyodan’s 120th Anniversary promise
to be the Hoshin (Shining Star) celebration marking
the year as a historical event in the chronology of
Jodo Shinshu in Hawaii. As being noted as a once in
a lifetime experience of culture and religion, I urge
all of our members to whole heartedly participate and
not miss this auspicious event.
The economic indicators for 2009 will bring us
an increase in the needs of our Sangha and
community for resources, support and participation
for providing the greater needs in life; namely faith,
compassion and fellowship. To that effort, we have
been and are still tasked with finding and acting on
solutions to decreasing membership, participation,
finances and our own free time. Moiliili Hongwanji
has left 2008 finding many new and old discoveries
and has just begun to find new ways to communicate
them with our members. In 2009 we will begin to
implement and integrate vital processes that make us
a temple where people want to be. As never needed
before, all of our members support and participation
is vital to our temple and religion’s longevity in this
new millennium. Your continued Aloha and support
is greatly appreciated. May the infinite light and
compassion of Amida Buddha guide all of our
actions and may we all attain perfect peace. Namo
Amida Butsu.

TEMPLE CLEANUP MAHALO
Thank you so much to everyone who came to
help with our annual temple cleanup on November
30. Approximately 50 members, led by Chair Susan
Morishige, worked hard to give the temple a good
cleaning. Members all pitched in to tackle the
various tasks, many of which are done just once a
year, and a delicious lunch prepared by the BWA
and a sense of satisfaction were the rewards enjoyed
by all. Thank you, members, for contributing your
time and elbow grease. Please be sure to join us
next year—the more hands, the merrier!

Place: Moiliili Hongwanji Mission
You are cordially invited to attend the special

Mission for their many years of dedication and
compassionate care. We take this time for
reflection and inspiration from the universal
principle of “Dana” as we extend our hearts and

We look forward to seeing our volunteers and
friends of Project Dana at this Appreciation Service.
Refreshments and fellowship will follow the
service. Please RSVP to Project Dana at 945-3736.
CONGRATULATIONS!
Project Dana received two awards recently. The
first award (Support Award) was given to The
Caring for the Caregiver Support Group by the
Hawaii’s Family Caregivers Coalition and
KHON2’s Elderhood project. Eunice Sakai has been
the outstanding leader serving as facilitator,
counselor, excursion planner, head chef and baker,
and backbone of this highly successful and
innovative support group since 2001. Here are a few
excerpts from the nomination, submitted by Elderly
Affairs Division’s Grants Manager, May Fujii Foo:
“Project Dana’s Caring for the Caregiver program
is being nominated because it exemplifies what
“caring” is about … taken the concept of nurturing
the “total person” approach in providing support to
family caregivers. It has created an environment
for caregivers to bond, build lasting friendships and
be nurtured in a comfort zone to get re-energized, to
continue to provide care and to reduce the stress
from their caregiving responsibilities.” Project
Dana is grateful for Eunice’s hard work, dedication
and knowledge in making this support group “award
winning” throughout the years. Caregivers are most
appreciative of her guidance and leadership. If you
are a caregiver or know of one who might benefit
from this support group, call Project Dana at 9453736 for more information.

HAWAII COMMUNITY FOUNDATION
Project Dana was chosen as one of two
organizations highlighted in its 2008 Annual Report,
who received funding from the Hawaii Community

organizations were recognized for their efforts in
making change “to benefit every island community.”
A one-page article about Project Dana with quotes

Rose, the staff, and scenes around the office were

years, is a truly memorable event .
The highlight of Hawaii Kyodan’s observance
of Shinran Shonin’s 750th Memorial Observance and
its 120th Anniversary Celebration will be the Ohana
Conference on Saturday, September 5, and the
Commemoration Service and Confirmation Rites on
Sunday, September 6, 2009. We are most honored
by the presence of Gomonshu Koshin and Lady
Noriko Ohtani.
The Ohana Conference will focus on the theme
“Annon—May Peace and Tranquility Prevail
Throughout the World,” beginning with an inspiring
morning service and a keynote address by the Rev.
Dr. David Matsumoto of Berkeley Buddhist
Temple. Afternoon workshops include: Special
sessions for youth and for adults by Rev. David
Matsumoto; Workshop for Peace; Buddhist Music
by B.J. Soriano; Buddhist Plants in Hawaii by Dr.
Osamu Kawabata & Rev. Jay Okamoto; Peace
Workshop “Gratitude” by Pacific Buddhist
Academy; Preschoolers Session—Arts and Crafts
“Making Peace T-shirts” & “Buddhist Holiday
Crafts”; Quiet time for Keiki. The workshops will
conclude by 3:00 PM and the Commemoration
banquet will be at 6:00 PM. The registration fee
including the banquet will be $100 for adults and
$50 for children.

HAPPY STRUMMERS NEWS
The annual Eitaikyo or Sangha Remembrance
Service on November 23 was a great opportunity and
honor for the Happy Strummers to play at the 9:00
AM and 10:30 AM services. The gatha When We See
the Golden Sun is a favorite enjoyed by
all. Hotokesama mentions father and mother, our
Sangha, being embraced by Buddha.
Several members stayed to listen to the Reverend
Shingo Furusawa of Pearl City Hongwanji. After
rendering Hotokesama at the 10:30 service, others had
a head start to go to Kyoto Osho for the annual gettogether. At Kyoto Osho we sorely missed Mr.
Matsuoka, our leader. We were happy that Reverend
Eric Matsumoto and Reverend Shingo Furusawa were
able to join us. The members had some time to look
over the list of 68 songs which Mr. Matsuoka has
diligently provided us with throughout the
years. There were 22 pieces members chose out of the
68. We will confine ourselves, for the time being, to
concentrate on them.
As Happy Strummers, we will be pleased to express
our happy feelings not only for our own pleasure but
also for different occasions at the temple and
community.

Sunday, November 16th Final meeting for 2008:
Hanamaru-maru! That’s a grade that means “terrific”!
About 40 of us enjoyed a wonderful lunch at nearby
Hanamaru Restaurant in Puck’s Alley after our BWAsponsored Hoonko service and installation meeting.
We all worked together to finish another fruitful year
as a BWA. The 2009 officers are a repeat of those
who served in 2008 and we thank them for their
continuing service and dedication to the group and
temple.
Sunday, November 30th Clean-up Day: We worked
with a spirit of “Hosha”, gratefulness to Amida’s
wisdom and compassion. Most of the ladies cleaned
the kitchen and parts of the Annex. Led by Sue
Sonoda and Helen Hamasu, they also prepared a
delicious lunch for all the workers. This year hardworking and scrubbing BWAers even took the time to
sort through old dishes and kitchen implements.
Banzai! Less clutter will lighten our hearts!
Welcome to New Member: A warm and hearty
welcome is extended to new member Joanne
Kealoha.
Honolulu United Officers for 2009: Moiliili’s Helen
Hamasu will serve as President of the Honolulu
United BWA for 2009. Other officers include Vice
President Lois Toyama, Secretary Mary Lou Lomaka,
Corresponding Secretary Jean Fukumoto, Treasurer
Alice Tokuda, and Auditors Amy Hirohata-Goto and
Sharyn Sekine .
Our heartfelt condolences to the family of the late
Nancy Kouzuki who passed away at 90 years of age.
She was indeed a very special woman who gave
unselfishly to our organization and temple for many
years. Also, to Karen Kikukawa who lost her
husband, Dane who was 56 years of age. Lastly, to
Betty Koseki whose sister, Ruth Matsuzaki, passed
away at 90 years of age.
Dates to remember:
Meeting: The BWA general membership meeting will
be on Sunday, February 22 at 10:30 AM.
Shinnenenkai: Don’t forget to mark your calendars
for February 8. It’s our Shinnenenkai at Treetops
Restaurant in beautiful Manoa Valley. The BWA
will be the hosts this year. Let’s welcome in the year
of the Ox all together! Moo~~~!

HEALTH AND WELLNESS
Mahalo to Shawnette Osborne and her
knowledgeable volunteers who presented us with an
educational program by the American Diabetes
Association and funded by HMSA. A powerpoint
presentation by three public health nurses followed
our Bodhi Day Service on December 14. It’s no
wonder diabetes and obesity is on the rise. The typical
serving size of a meal has tripled in calories in just a
few decades!
After the powerpoint presentation, everyone
moved to the lanai for diabetes screening, blood
pressure checks and health related information. Did
you get a pedometer? Have you put it to use? Your
goal should be 10,000 steps a day. Walking is great
exercise. “Move it or lose it!”
Thank you to those who braved the rainy weather
to attend service and participate in the health and
wellness program. Mahalo to Cyndi Osajima and
Jeanne Watari for the setup/take down and
coordinating duties.

JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2009
On November 28, we worked at the
University of Hawaii Women’s Basketball game at
the Stan Sheriff Concession. For many of us, it was
our first time and it was quite an experience! We plan
to work again on December 29 at the Rainbow
Classic, as a fundraiser.
And finally, on December 7, we made Bodhi
Day cards for the senior citizens at the Kuakini Adult
Day Care as a community service project. We made
simple cards using imprints of Bodhi leaves and
stating a brief statement on what Bodhi Day is.
We would like to thank Rev. Eric and Mrs.
Matsumoto for getting the Bodhi leaves for us.

DHARMA SCHOOL NEWS
On December 14, 2008 the Moiliili
Hongwanji Mission Dharma School had a lot of fun
participating in Bodhi Day activities. Along with
students from the Moiliili Hongwanji Preschool, the
children enjoyed a bouncy house, candle making,
bodhi leaf imprint card-making, and even some water
fun! The Dharma School would like to thank
Outreach Coordinator Alex for organizing the day’s
festivities, the Moiliili Jr. YBA for supervising the
bouncy house, Ms. Tamayo for teaching us how to
make candles from recycled materials and everyone
who brought the delicious food that we enjoyed at
the potluck.
As 2008 comes to an end, the MHM Dharma
School would like to thank everyone who has
supported our organization and hopes to continue to
receive the same compassionate support in 2009. We
are looking forward to working together as an
`ohana’ to learn about the Dharma while enjoying
the rest of the school year!

New Years Message
from Pieper Toyama,
Pacific Buddhist Academy
Head of School
With these thoughts, I wish all of you a
Happy New Year.
Namo Amida Butsu.
When I trained in kendo at the Hilo
Hongwanji Betsuin under Nishioka Atsuo Sensei,
we started each New Year with a special early
morning training session followed by the
Kagamibiraki ceremony in the temple. We marched
from the dojo to the temple dressed in our best gi
and hakama to join the judo and karate students for
a special service conducted by the Rimban. After
the service, all of the martial arts students retired to
the social hall for the traditional zenzai.

The 2008-09 Annual Giving Campaign
is in full swing!
Each year on that occasion, we were
reminded to look carefully in the mirror to see
ourselves as we really are and not as we want to see
ourselves. We were reminded to take the time to
evaluate ourselves to understand how we were doing
in our lives and how we were being of service to
others. It was a time to rededicate ourselves to
living more fully, to living more compassionately.
It was a satisfying and comforting ritual with which
to begin the year for it gave us an opportunity to
take a look at the past and to live in the present with
a renewed sense of optimism for the future.
Our current Annual Giving year began on July 1,
2008 and ends on June 30, 2009. Please make your
contribution today! Call Director of Advancement

As in my days as a kendo student, the
students and teachers of the Pacific Buddhist
Academy will gather in the temple of Hawaii
Betsuin on their first day back at school on January
5th and engage in our own ritual of renewal.
SAVE-the-DATES
Third Annual Taiko & Karaoke Festival
Sunday, March 8, 2009
Pearl City Cultural Center
Our ritual will include two parts. In the first
part we will take an honest look at our lives and the
opportunities we have taken and the opportunities
we have lost to live compassionately. We will sit in
silence and reflect upon our lives and see ourselves
as we truly are. In the second part of the ritual, we
will oshoko as a reminder that like the incense
rising, releasing its beautiful scent, and filling the
room, we must rise and release our compassionate
