Free Guided Tours
■Tours of Nagoya Castle: departs East Gate of Nagoya Castle every Wednesday and Saturday at 13:30.
Entrance fee (500 Yen). No reservations needed.
Reservations are required at least 7 days before for the following tours:
■Toyota Commemorative Museum of Industry and Technology: departs museum reception on Saturdays
at 13:30. Entrance fee (500 Yen).
■Atsuta Jingu Shrine: departs Main (South) Gate of Atsuta Jingu on Saturdays at 13:30.
■Osu Shopping Arcade: depart West Gate of Osu-Kannon Temple on Saturdays at 12:50.
■Arimatsu, hometown of tie-dyeing: depart Ticket Gate of Arimatsu Station 有松 (Meitetsu Main Line) on
Saturdays at 13:30. Entrance fee (450 Yen).
Join the English Haiku Ginko Walk on September 24 (09:00 -13:00). Begins at Osu Kannon Temple
stepa, passes through the shopping arcade, and ends at Mondo Books in Kamimaezu for writing workshop and

Movie Theatre Schedule
The Japanese F1 Grand Prix returns to nearby Mie for the 15th race of the 2011 season. Twenty-four world-class drivers will compete over 53 gruelling
laps of the world famous Suzuka Circuit 鈴鹿サーキット gaining top speeds of over 300 km/h. The 2010 race was won by German Sebastian Vettel.

SING and DANCE for a CAUSE, a Charity Concert
PSJNC 主催 チャリティーコンサート
The Philippine Society in Japan, Nagoya Chapter (PSJNC) will hold a charity
concert to raise funds for the completion of NAGOYA VILLAGE, a
thirty-house community for the homeless in the Philippines and for the
victims of the tsunami in the Tohoku Region. Featured performers are
Studio Clara Ballet, Force Studio Hiphop, Core Belly Dancing School,
Philippine Folk dances, and seven Filipino singers.

Concert 名古屋フィルハーモニー交響楽団定期演奏会
Featuring French conductor Frédéric Chaslin. Pieces will include Ravel's
"Pavane for a Dead Princess", Chausson's "Poem of Love and the Sea",
Bizet's "Suite from Carmen", and Chaslin's own Wuthering Heights.

Daniel Gaede, the concert master of the world-renowned Vienna
Philharmonic will be performing a free private mini-concert with his
Gaede String Quartet on November 15 (14:00 - 15:00) at the historic
Nagoya City Archives Building. All 100 seats are up for grabs in a ticket

Autumn Moon Festivals at Tokugawaen
Tickets for Friday practice are 4000 Yen for adults, 3000 Yen for students,
1600 Yen for junior-high students, and 800 Yen for children; only on sale at
the gate.
Toyohashi Fire Festival 第16回炎の祭典
When: Saturday, September 10 (10:00 - 20:30)
Where: Toyohashi Koen 豊橋公園, Toyohashi City
Access: A 3 minute walk from Toyohashi Koen Mae street car stop 豊橋公園前 or
a 20 minute walk from Toyohashi Station (Meitetsu & JR).
Toyohashi is the birthplace of "tezutsu" fireworks. These fireworks are hand-made,
hand-launched fireworks that send an amazing pillar of flame directly over the
person who launches it. The "tezutsu" display is the climax of the festival. As well
as fireworks there are also stage events all day from 10:00 in support of recovery
efforts in Eastern Japan.
The highlight of the festival is the fire dance 炎の舞 (17:30 - 20:30) at the
Toyohashi Baseball Ground (located inside Toyohashi Koen). Tickets are required.
Buy in advance (on weekdays only until Sep 9) using P-code 619-460 from Circle K,
Sunkus, Seven Eleven, or Ticket Pia. Tickets are priced between 500 and 2500 Yen.
Infield (700 Yen) and outfield (500 Yen) stand tickets are only available on the day.
ETJ-Aichi Workshop 英語講師向けのワークショップ
English Teachers in Japan (ETJ) - Aichi is a professional development and
networking group for aspiring, new, or established English teachers and
school owners - join for free. This workshop will be run by Bob Pensak who
will be show you how to use “magic in the classroom” and will present
ideas for Halloween.

School of Cross-Cultural Studies, Room 108.

There are 19 different categories of tickets. Tickets are available at Lawson
with the below L-codes (l-tike.com/sports/f1) or from www.suzukacircuit.jp.
Prices vary depending upon location and start from 11,000 Yen for adults and
3000 Yen for children (L-code 50283 & 50285) for a 2 or 3-day pass. There
are also sections set out for seniors, ladies (L-code 50287), and group seats.
Children’s and student discounts are also available. When: Friday, September 16 to Sunday, September 18 (10:00 - 18:00;
last day until 17:45)
Where: Oasis 21 and the adjacent NHK Nagoya Building in Sakae
Admission: Free
Watch traditional craftsmen making kimonos, candles, tofu, traditional
confectionary, tatami, stone & wood crafts, dolls, clocks, lanterns, and
rattan furniture. Some booths allow visitors (for a nominal fee) have a go
at making some of the crafts.
Special Exhibition: The Tokugawa Princesses 企画展: 徳川の姫君
The Tokugawa Art Museum holds many possessions from various princesses of the Tokugawa
family, including those from the Tokugawa Shogunal family that rules Japan from 1600 to 1868
and the Gosanke (the three houses of the Tokugawa), among which the Owari Tokugawa
were the most senior.
How did these princesses, who stood at the pinnacle of female society, spend their days?
Through furnishings, clothing, texts and paintings that these princesses may have viewed, held
in their hands, and used to comfort their hearts, this exhibition will uncover their lives.
When: Until Monday, September 19 (10:00 - 17:00); closed on Mondays except 9/19.

Admission: 1200 Yen. Students 700 Yen & JH & ES students 500 Yen - however free all
students on Saturdays!
Tsukimi 月見, literally moon-viewing, is a traditional event that takes
place on August 15th in the lunar calendar. In 2011 it falls on
September 12. The moon isn't always full, but its meant to be at its
brightest and most beautiful. Free tsuki-mi-dango (moon
dumplings) will be available in the Garden’s grounds - limited to the
first 200 people.
When: Sunday, September 11 (17:30 - 20:30); special extended
opening time.
Where: Tokugawaen 徳川園, Higashi Ward
Admission: 300 Yen, under 16s free; Nagoya seniors (over 65) 100
Yen.

The par 72 west course at the Miyoshi Country Club hosts this annual golf tournament. Its an annual event on the Japan Golf Tour and attracts top
players from across the Asia-Pacific region with this year’s winner taking home 24 million Yen (approx $US 300,000). Past winners include Ryo
ISHIKAWA, former US Open winner Corey Pavin, and former US Masters winner Mark O'Meara.

Nagoya International Center Children’s Japanese Class 子ども日本語教室
This course is taught by volunteers and is designed for children (born between April 2 1996 and April 1 2005) whose native language is not Japanese.
Students learn Japanese skills necessary for school and daily life. The autumn term has 11, 90-minute classes and runs every Sunday (10:00 - 11:30)
from September 18 to November 27; 1000 Yen covers all 11 classes and there are only 30 places available.
Applications will be accepted on Sunday, September 11 (09:45 - 10:15) at the Nagoya International Center 4F Lecture Room 3; fee collection will start
at around 11:00. A parent or guardian should attend the application process and bring a filled out application form; part of the form needs to be filled

School Guidance Seminar for Children of Foreign Nationals
外国人の子どもと保護者のための進学ガイダンス
Coming from a different cultural background, most foreign parents living in Japan have a
different idea of what further education should be. The lack knowledge about the Japanese
school system and the language barrier make it difficult for the parent to fully understand the
potential further education choices available to their child. This Nagoya International Center
seminar, in coordination with both the Nagoya and Aichi boards of education, will provide
advice and possible options students will have available to them once they have graduated
from Junior High School. English, Spanish, Portuguese, Filipino, and Chinese interpreters
are available by reservation. After the seminar, representatives from a number of local high
schools will be available to answer your questions.
The seminar is free, however places are limited to 80 parents and students. Reservations are
required can be made by calling (052-581-0100) or visiting the Nagoya International Center
3F Information Counter.

Setomono Matsuri せともの祭
The Ragús Show ザ・アイリッシュダンス
This popular and long-running festival offers a

Making the Most out of Nagoya City Sports Facilities 名古屋市のスポーツ施設の利用方法
Municipal sports facilities can be used for various sports and other purposes. There are over 130 municipal sports
facilities - including sports centers (with volleyball, badminton, basketball, and futsal courts), tennis courts,
baseball fields, athletic fields, football and rugby fields, gateball fields, and baseball stadiums. A full list of
available facilities is available on line (in English) on the City of Nagoya website - http://bit.ly/nagoyasportslist.
★Example Costs
Compared to private clubs and facilities, Nagoya’s municipal sports facilities can be rented at a very reasonable
rate if used for amateur sports or public recreational use. There is no change in costs for weekends or holidays!
 A badminton court at Chikusa Sports Center’s #1 Arena from 09:00 - 12:00 costs 1800 Yen.
 A basketball / volleyball court at Chikusa Sports Center’s #1 Arena from 18:00 - 21:00 costs 3400 Yen.
 To rent the entire #1 Arena at Chikusa Sports Center from 15:00 - 18:00 costs only 8900 Yen!
 A tennis court at Meijo Tennis Courts in Kita Ward from 15:00 - 17:00 costs1000 Yen.

If you would like to use a facility for a game with friends or colleagues, the person reserving the facility has to first pre-register. User registration applications are free and are accepted at each facility or at the Sports Information Center (located opposite the Nippon Gaishi Arena in Kasadera). On registration you will receive a user number and PIN. You can then reserve a sports facility for use either in person at the facility or on the Internet (some facilities
excluded). There are no registration or annual membership fees.
★Reserving a Facility Through Lottery
The usage of courts and facilities are first filled by lottery:
 For the exclusive use of an arena or facility (全面専用) - you can enter the usage lottery between January 1 - 19 (for April to September) and
July
1 to July 19 (for October to March).
 For a tennis court, part of an arena (example badminton court), baseball ground etc (一部専用) - you can enter the usage lottery held 2 months
before your desired month.
 Payment of rental fees decided by lottery can be made by direct debit or in cash.

★Reserving Available Facilities on a First-Come Basis
Any facilities not taken during the lottery are available on a first-come basis and usage fees can be paid in cash on the day (except Shonai Green Plaza).
You can check the availability of facilities and reserve them on-line on the Nagoya City Sports and Recreation Information System website (08:00 24:00) - http://bit.ly/nagoyasports. The interface is all in Japanese as shown below in steps 1 to 3.

- 18:00). Closed on Mondays and at New Year. The number of lanes and opening times are restricted on some days. The pool is segregated to
provide exclusive lanes for strong swimmers, walkers, slow swimmers, and general recreational use.
