Overview of emergency medical assistance during Winter Olympics 2014 in Sochi, Russia December, 5st, 2013 7- 23 February 2014 in Sochi will be held the worlds brightest sporting event – Winter Olympics. The Olympic Games in Sochi will be holding events in 15 disciplines of 7 winter sports: Biathlon Winter Olympics & Paralympics 2014 Bobsleigh: Bobsleigh and Skeleton Curling Ice Hockey Luge Skating: Figure Skating, Short Track Speed Skating and Speed Skating Skiing: Alpine, Cross Country, Nordic Combined, Ski Jumping, Freestyle and Snowboard 7 – 16 of March 2014 Sochi will host the Winter Paralympics. The Paralympic Winter Games in Sochi will be holding events in five winter sports: Alpine Skiing Biathlon Cross-Country Skiing Ice Sledge Hockey Wheelchair Curling Location Coastal Cluster The central focus of the coastal cluster will be the Olympic Park. It will connect all competition venues, parking zone and infrastructure elements. For the first time in the history of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, all ice arenas will be within walking distance of one other. The Olympic Park will be able to accommodate about 70,000 visitors when full. Mountain Cluster The Mountain Cluster includes: Biathlon and Ski Complexes Bobsleigh Track Ski Center Ski Jump Complex Snowboard Park Freestyle Center There are 3 hospitals in Sochi which are included into the program of preparation for Winter Olympics 2014. They have been chosen on a territorial basis and taking in account their medical profiles: Emergency & Healthcare Facilities State Clinical Hospital # 4 in Sochi Regional Clinical Hospital #4 in Adler State Clinical Hospital # 8 in Krasnaya Polyana In both clusters there will be local emergency teams (MCHS), ambulances, each Olympic Cluster will have 2 medical units called Olympic Polyclinics. In Mountain Cluster MCHS teams will be responsible for the first emergency help and evacuating patient from the mountain to the hospital. Mobile Medical Unit was invented by Russian scientists, it’s Russian “know-how”. It was first tested in Kazan, during Russian Universiade in 2013. Two of them will be installed in Mountain Cluster for Winter Olympics. Technically a Mobile Medical Unit is a bus, where all the seats are removed and the interior space is converted into medical unit. Olympic “Polyclinic” – Mobile Medical Unit Medical Units will be equipped with: GE Optima CT Scan 660 64 slice (picture 1) and GE Signa HDxt 1,5T MRI (picture 2) and will include: 1. Examination Room 2. Control Room 3. Technical Room 4.Technical Compartment State Clinical Hospital # 4, Sochi State Clinical Hospital # 4 in Sochi is specialized in: cardio surgery, vascular surgery, otolaryngology , ophthalmology, therapy, neurology, traumatology. The main specialties of the hospital are cardio surgery including vascular surgery and neurosurgery. Cardiology department situated in a new separate building (built according to the Olympic program and launched in 2013). Hospital has about 700 beds, 12 of them are ICU, 20 – therapy, 60 – neurosurgery, 118 - cardiology. Regional Clinical Hospital #4, Adler Regional Clinical Hospital #4 in Adler specialized in: traumatology, pulmonology, rheumatology, surgery, therapy, neurology, cardiology, cardio surgery. The main specialties are: gynecology, infectious diseases. Medical facility also has a children department in a separate new-built building. The hospital has about 305 beds, provides medical services on 32 specialties including department of infectious diseases both for adults and children. State Clinical Hospital # 8 in Krasnaya Polyana State Clinical Hospital # 8 in Krasnaya Polyana specialized in traumatology, rheumatology, surgery, therapy, neurology, cardiology, rehabilitation, urology, gastroenterology. This hospital is similar in it’s capabilities to the Regional Hospital # 4 in Adler, but here the main specialties are traumatology (including osteosynthesis) and diagnostic services. This is the 1st and only hospital where the patients from Mountain Cluster will be taken. During the Winter Olympics the above mentioned state medical facilities will be a priority but private medical facilities will also be available. Private Healthcare In Krasnaya Polyana, Adler, Sochi private ambulance will be on duty as well as the state ones during the Olympic Games. In Adler and Sochi house-call / hotel visit also will be available. If you are seriously injured or ill your first step is to seek treatment at the nearest hospital or doctor or if you have been involved in an emergency and cannot get to a hospital call the emergency operations centre at 03. During the Winter Olympics the region of Moscow will send to Sochi a big MCHS team and 1300 doctors to man ambulances and medical units from January 15th, Kazan will send 1000 doctors for outpatient clinics and Krasnodar - 1000 doctors for inhospital services. Medical Staffing issues Krasnodar region will send additional medical helicopters. The number of doctors and nurses in the medical unit in Adler International Airport will be doubled. Language courses for the staff of all of the hospitals which are part of Olympic program is a must. Some of the hospitals already have doctors who speak English, French, German. There will also be about 25 000 volunteers helping the sportsmen and guests during the Games including medical translations. Medical facilities in Sochi are fully equipped to provide all necessary medical treatment, but in case patient has to be transported to his home country it can be arranged promptly: As soon as the incident has occurred, the patient will be attended by MCHS doctor on site. Evacuation & Air ambulance access Then, he’ll be taken down (from the mountain or Olympic object) by helicopter or sledges, depending on situation, and brought to the hospital responsible for this cluster. There he’ll be provided with all the necessary treatment. If the evacuation is requested either by patient, his home country doctor or his insurance, he’ll be stabilized and prepared for the flight in a very short term. The nearest airport is Adler International Airport, and that’s the main point of access for the international Air Ambulances.
