を占めています

が、二酸化炭素の排出量は運輸部門全体の
3.0%
（g-CO2 ベース）
にすぎません

。
したがって、
鉄道が１人を１km 運ぶのに排出する二酸化炭素の量は、
自家用車の約９分の１となります
（図３）
。
持続可能な社会を実現するためにも、
環境負荷の小さい鉄道は今後も重要な役割を果たしていくことが期待されます。
Rail transport accounts for 27.7% of domestic passenger travel (figure 1). However, it constitutes only 3.0% of transport-related CO 2
emissions (figure 2). CO2 emissions per passenger-km are approximately one ninth of the emissions of private car travel (figure 3).
In order to realize a sustainable society, eco-friendly railways are expected to play an important part.
