(With obvious apologies to Neil Young) Exaggerations can surely be forgiven on this occasion – Nagoya’s 30th annual Foreign Artists Exhibition (FAE)! With original founding members still at the helm, this year’s FAE is going to be something special. Dating back to 1986, this ever-popular show has not only enabled nearly 500 foreign artists from 45 different countries to show their artwork to the general public free-of-charge, it has also provided an opportunity for locals to appreciate the creative energy of the foreigners living among them. The FAE has been referred to as an “institution”, which grows increasingly accurate with each passing year. It is not just the aims and objectives of the exhibition that have remained unchanged since FAE 1; some of the original squad is still running the show, along with a number of the original members of the Central Japan International Society (CJIS), which organizes the FAE. Events for Kids and Families Pets Exhibition Day I know every time I see a tiny dog with a ridiculously oversized bow, or someone bending right down with a wet-wipe to their Chihuahua’s ass, or that old Japanese man who proudly holds his pooch in a knitted sweater and walks around Tsurumai Park, you will always find me in a state of awwwww (note the inflection). So get ready for the awws and the kawaiis at the biggest day for pets in Nagoya. You can check out the dog’s hair and fashion shows (who knows what will supersede the cube?!) and you can even get involved in the photo session with the pups. September 17 | 10:00~17:00 Kinjo-Futo Station Port Messe Nagoya, No.2 Exhibition Hall, Minato-ku Sakae Yaba-cho Haunted House The Curse of the Lullaby This is perhaps one for the big kids only... Get a scare in early before Halloween, as this haunted is unlike any other. Gomi Hirofumi, who is 4house NAGMAG responsible for this house of horrors, has created a series of interactive scenes involving a sick child and a murder. You will not be cheaply startled or tricked; you will follow the story throughout the house and will be begging with the people inside to stop. Don’t forget to bring a second pair of undies, because you will fill the first with sheer terror. I will be brining three. Until September 23 Wakamiya Odori Park, beneath the overpass at the Yaba-cho Intersection www.hicbc.com/special/obake/index.htm Dinosaurs in Noritake Garden You have probably already taken your kids to see the new Jurassic Park movie, because it (hopefully) guarantees a couple of hours of airconditioned quiet-time. Just so you don’t feel too guilty, you can take your kids outside to check out some dinosaurs too (plus we know you think it’s really cool and you wanna see real dinosaurs too). Noritake Garden has been transported back to the Cretaceous Age, with walking-talking- roaring dinosaurs, including a huge 15 meter long tyrannosaurus-rex. There is a dinosaur quiz rally and best of all, entry is free! Until September 27 Kamejima Station www.noritake.co.jp/eng/mori/ City Light Fantasia by NAKED Kaleidoscope Fireworks in the Starry Sky Lights and shiny things high up in the sky; no, you are not high. Throughout September you can marvel at the starry sky of Achi Village in Nagano projected onto Nagoya’s Sky Deck windows. This computer generated rendering of this celebrated sky, and NAKED Inc.’s kaleidoscopic fireworks creation, “FIREWORKS” represent the theme of “a child’s vision of a future city”, so you can ooh and ahh at the bright lights with the little ones. Pretty cool if you ask me. Until September 27 Nagoya TV Tower Sky Deck observation deck Sakae Station September 2015 NAGEATS 30th Foreign hibition Additionally, four of the 12 artists who took part in very first exhibition in 1986 still live in Nagoya, and continue to produce and exhibit works; while another 10 artists have been participating for 15 years or more. Preparations for the big 30 are proceeding smoothly - after 30 years “at it”, you’d expect no less, obviously! We have received a heartening number of new artists expressing interest in the show and, together with our regular participants, should help us top 60 exhibiting artists. Being the 30th anniversary, we would be delighted to see an aboveaverage number of participants (we had a huge 72 artists back in 1995) and, of course, visitors (the current record is 1500, some years ago). This year’s exhibition will be held over six days from 3 to 8 November at the Nagoya International Centre and the application deadline for artists is October 25. So, if there is still an undecided or reclusive foreign artist out there, aged above 18 years (and of reasonably sound mind) who has yet to apply, now is the time! Drop us a line on the details below. Satisfaction guaranteed, hopefully. My, my, hey, hey, The Foreign Artists show is here to stay. Scout Leader Mike Coutu is excited to announce the city’s new English scouting group - Nagoya Troops and Pack 758! They will be launching three troops for cubs, boys and girls, sponsored by local company Interlink. All families with children from grade one to 18 years of age are invited to an information event on September 19 at Aichi Seinen Kaikan. You can also sign up on the day. They will be registered with Boy Scouts of America (BSA) and Girl Scouts of America (GSA) because they offer the best youth support system, and they also plan to hold activities with the Scout Association of Japan. This is a great opportunity for children around Nagoya to have fun, form new friendships, build character, and learn about responsibilities and participating in groups, which are core values of the BSA and GSA. Following the information session, they plan to launch their new units in October with a hike or a campout. For more information, contact Mike Coutu: hamayamike@hotmail.com. You’re Not Alone Nagoya-based Psychologist Kisstopher Musick explains that feeling unsupported in a relationship is very common Marriage can be challenging at the best of times. Adding the stress and strain of living abroad or being a mixed couple can bring issues to the surface which can become very challenging. • Start by sharing that you want to support them but don’t know what they need. I’m sure everyone has heard that communication is the key to a happy marriage, but what do you do when every time you try to communicate a fight ensues? First of all, it is helpful to keep in mind that when you are fighting about everything, it usually means that you are talking about nothing. This is important to realize because in each fight there are most likely clues as to what it is your partner needs to talk about. These clues usually come by way of off-topic comments. • Know that they are struggling. Off-topic comments during an argument indicate what the fight is truly about. For example, if your partner blows up about the postal service in Japan and then suddenly jumps into a rant about lack of support; the issue is that they are not feeling supported. The lack of feeling supported is very common and most people struggle to articulate what it is they need from their partner to feel supported. If your partner is not feeling supported, you can: 6 NAGMAG • Do your best to listen without feeling defensive. • Do not offer solutions or tell your partner how they feel; listen to them and try to give them what they need. • Ask for examples of times when they have felt supported or that you were meeting their needs and try to recreate the example. With patience and understanding, a lot of issues can be resolved. Sadly, not every issue can be resolved this way, and sometimes the fighting can take too large a toll on the relationship and mediation is needed for communication. There is no shame in needing a mediator to aid your communication, because facilitated communication brings back balance and fairness. Mediation ensures that each party is seen, heard, and validated. With mediation and facilitation, there is no bad guy. So often in relationships, partners can lose sight of each other and how they became a couple in the first place. Facilitated communication can help you remember what it is about your partner that first drew you to them. Mediation can help you understand what the relationship has to offer you and the benefits of staying together. It can help you heal and move on from hurt and angry feelings. The process can help you rediscover you happiness. One of our focuses at Adjustment Guidance is helping couples find each other and their happiness. I am a caring and devoted psychologist with over 20 years’ experience facilitating communication and helping couples get back to being happy. You don’t have to do this alone. Our team will work with you and your partner to achieve the life you deserve and happiness you crave. You can have a happy and peaceful relationship. You can be a happy couple in a thriving partnership. Why wait? Book your free consultation today and take the step to begin living the life you deserve. However, for the humidity to loosen its grip, we still have one set of meteorological phenomena to endure: the September typhoons, when the nation will be bombarded by storms that can be as dangerous as the the splitting of a yakuza gang. Most Japanese will equip their homes with a hijoubukuro, an emergency bag filled with items for survival should they be forced to evacuate. Contents may include water, a radio and a first-aid kit. However, as gaijin, you have different requirements, so we have compiled a list of essential items for your hijoubukuro. Fashionable rucksack Most hijoubukuro bags are extremely practical: waterproof, lightweight and high-vis. However, they are bloody ugly things to look at, and most of you would rather be seen dead, literally, than carrying one. So instead, NagMag recommend that you release your inner hipster and shell out for a Swedish Fjäll Räven backpack to carry your life-saving items. You won’t get lucky when you meet a halfdrowned hotty whilst carrying some ugly fucking rucksack that looks like it’s used to cover a turkey at Christmas. Speaking of which… Condoms Now, we don’t want to be crass, but when emotions and fear are high, libidos run wild. Just ask the British women of the 1940s and the American GIs who left them with little more than empty promises and syphilis. When you are cooped up in some evacuation center twiddling your thumbs, there may be people grieving for loved ones, who need comforting. This is where you and those idle thumbs – and other body parts perhaps – can help momentarily relieve the pain. Just until the devastating reality of their situation dawns on them once again. But by that time you will be ‘counselling’ some other poor soul, so it’s not your problem. Extra chargers for phone There will be power outages, which will lead to most amenities being out of order, but more importantly you won’t be able to charge your smartphone. Things can get that bad. And as you look around there will be so many photo ops: a wailing, parentless infant; a frail old lady holding the hand of her septuagenarian husband breathing his last on a cot bed; a family huddled in contorted despair as they recall seeing a beloved pet being washed away by the waves. But if you have a bunch of charged batteries, you can capture every image, slap on the X-PRO II filter, Instagram them and see your ‘like’ count skyrocket. Taking selfies replete with ‘V’ signs may not go down to well, but let’s face it, that’s not going to stop you. Booze Most sensible people will fill their hijoubukuro with water. It may be the elixir of life, but it’s pretty dull. And when you consider your workplace could be closed the following day, it’s the perfect opportunity to get ripped to the tits. Bear in mind though that most conbinis, due to flooding and death, will be temporarily closed. A forward-planning gaijin will fill their bag with enough booze to get them through the night. Unfortunately for those who work for Aeon, the bastards will probably expect you to turn up the next day, regardless. In fact you will likely be docked pay for not having drowned on the job. Textbooks There is a good chance that your alcohol stash will run out (which, let’s be honest will be after the first night, you borderline alcoholic, you). So why not take the opportunity to work on your piss-poor Japanese? The best way of improving your language skills in this situation is to talk to your fellow evacuees. However, it is unlikely that vocabulary such as “do you have any spare food?”, “please help, I am in so much pain” or “my whole family were drowned, I don’t know how I will carry on with my life” will be on the N5 JLPT exam in December. No, you’re better off getting your head in the books and studying something more useful. Flash Cards You have a captive audience with spare time and no doubt everyone will be asking “where you from?” Now is the best time to spread the English tongue. And in a barter society, who knows what helpful survival tools you can acquire in exchange for English lessons. Do keep in mind that profiteering in times of emergency is usually looked down upon, but only by those who aren’t profiting. Electric Guitar No matter how slim, there is a possibility that this typhoon is the beginning of the apocalypse, a time of warlords ruling a barren earth, holding sway over impoverished populace with an iron fist. And so, which of those do you want to be? A warlord with the world at its feet, or a serf indentured to their master? The answer is obvious. Those of you who have seen the recent Mad Max movie will know that no warlord is complete without a blind goon strapped to a vehicle made of amps playing breakneck guitar. Should the time come, if you can find your blind man and give him a guitar, you’re halfway there to warlordship. For those of you who haven’t seen it, well you should. It’s a bloody good movie and will prepare you pretty well for your post-civilisation life. Good luck out there, and be safe! But to be honest, I hadn’t ventured into any of these venues for what feels like a generation; my best Saturday nights are not banging my head back and forth to monotonous beats. So with fresh eyes (not jaded at all, I promise) I waded through the horny, EDM generation and found a few surprises. Whoever you are, or whoever you are pretending to be, you’ll find somewhere to go in the Nag at nite (I might stay home though). Orca Club Orca is one of the youngest and up-and-coming nightspots in central Sakae on the 11th and 12th floors of the Don Quijote and is definitely worth the elevator ride and the wait. Once those doors open, it’s like a Baz Luhrmann movie; a grand entranceway with the loudest of sound systems. You’ll find two rooms. There is a revolving door of DJ superstars, and the locals do a damn fine job dropping the hottest hip hop and R&B from the 90s onwards. You’ll hear house, trance, K-pop and much more likely, EDM. There is also a second floor, but, it’s VIP and I have never been deemed V.I. enough to warrant a peek. Though all my cooler friends tell me the view of “the city” is impressive. Map Page 30 | C2 (052) 951-7105 www.orca.nagoya MIXX Korean pop music has a huge following in Japan, though Nagoya has never been home to a club dedicated to the music of PSY and Girls’ Generation (literally the only two acts I know) – until now. The glitzy Sound Space Mixx has taken their most popular event, the NESTAL K-pop party, and made it weekly. Already a popular place to grab a drink and a bite before the bigger clubs open, Mixx is now the most acceptable place to break out your Gangnam Style… I really need to listen to more K-pop. If you need a break from the K-pop at Mixx, check out Topps, the hip-hop space just one flight up. Map Page 30 | B3 (052) 261-3303 www.mixx-japan.com/index.html JB’s The Ikeda Koen area is the closest thing we have to a red light district, full of hostess bars, massage parlors and love hotels. If you can get past the rough-looking crowd, the stench of trash and the rumors of gangland beheadings (which is easy if you’re tanked), you’ll find some of the coolest clubs in Japan, with JB the matron of the area. A popular spot for touring DJs and on the top club lists around the world. They always manage to get a decent crowd, with a comfortable collection of hip hop and house, plus regular jazzy or rock dance music events. And they’re usually open until the sun comes up, so it’s a one-stop party and the perfect place for a bender. Map Page 30 | D2 (052) 241-2234 www.club-jbs.jp/ 12 NAGMAG Domina Domina could be your little haven away from the big rooms around town, especially if even JB’s is too pop for your taste. With their dynamic lineup of monthly events, you’ll feel like you never step into the same club twice, which is pretty unique for Nagoya. Bass fans congregate here; you’ll find D&B, UK garage and grime, as well as one of the best places in town to hear classic funk and soul. Chill vibe, friendly crowd. Map Page 30 | D2 www.cafe-domina.com/ September 2015 NAGNITELIFE MAGO In the never-ending argument about which is Nagoya’s best nightspot, Club Mago is always up there. In the heart of Shinsakae, Mago has spaces dedicated to live music, performance art and dance. The main room is famous for the most technologically-advanced sound systems in town, making it a favorite for local DJs and international names. You won’t find people trolling for tail at a Mago party, you’ll be among true fans. Monthly events are varied, but the biggest turnouts are found at their regular parties like SMASH with local legend DJ Ogawa. (052) 243-1818 www.club-mago.co.jp/ iD Cafe Don’t let the name fool you; iD Cafe is a club. Actually, it’s six clubs. And even though it’s one of the oldest in town, it is still clean (which matters if you are sober). What is great about this place is that you can go up a floor to escape the music: if you are sick of pounding your head to EDM, you have the choice of house, hip hop, reggae and RnB. Be warned though, the schedule changes day to day, but it’s always a well-planned mix, with nothing outside the box. It closes at 1am, so it’s a good, predictable party-starter. Map Page 30 | B2 (052) 251-0382 www.idcafe.info/ Links If you’re horny and you know it clap your hands… When iD shuts their doors, releasing a wave of drunk and DTF revelers onto the streets, there are more than a few options. And this one is right across the street. Run by the affable Eddie, you’ll find an atmosphere that allows you to do what you wanna do – have harmless late night drinks, a secret encounter or just shake your ass (which may lead to a secret, or more public encounter). The hip hop DJs mix everything from the newest hits to the oldest of old school. And Links doesn’t have a cover charge, like most post-iD venues, ‘cause they know people are gonna come. So if you’ve invested the former part of your night in that special someone, Links is the place where you will find out if you’re gonna seal the deal. Map Page 30 | B2 (052) 242-6700 www.facebook.com/LINKSBARSAEKE Lover:Z Shinsakae is where you go when you can’t be arsed with crowds, and Lover:Z is where you go when you’ve given up on the last train. An exclusive little gem for the rap and R&B community, and one of the only clubs in town that is not on the internetz. So finding out when they’re playing host to an international hip hop star (like last month’s Chelsea Reject gig) can be tricky - but it wouldn’t be cool if you could actually find out gig info. However, the second Saturday of the month is always a safe bet with the Metro Club, Nagoya’s premiere all-sexuality event. A wild night with the friendliest group of drag queens since To Wong Foo, and a crowd so diverse you’d think they were shooting a community college promo spot. www.thenagoyametroclub.com/2901.html 090-4194-9722 September 2015 NAGMAG 13 5 NAGNITELIFE NAGNITELIFE X-Hall Smack bang in the middle of Osu Kannon arcade, X-Hall has become a laser-powered event packed with the college youth of Aichi. X-Hall knows what its crowd wants; deafening popular hits. The vibe is more akin to a live show than a dance floor with the predominately male crowd cheering the DJ as if it were Avicii himself. And while they’ve never booked the super Swede, they have managed to line up some of the hottest producers from around the world. If you want to see a crowd lose their shit to a Call Me Maybe remix, then X-Hall is for you. Map Page 30 | B4 (052) 265-6657 www.x-hall.jp/ The Plastic Factory Sometimes you want an unpredictable night, maybe a different atmosphere and music that will surprise you. This is The Plastic Factory. An important staple of the international community where local DJs get their start. The dance floor is spacious, comfortably lit, with dark, secret couched corners for pashing or passing out. Expect disco, acid-trance, 80s pop, 60s soul and rock and roll. The last Sunday of the month hosts the popular open mic and art space event, The Harmonium Parlour. Definitely one to check out. 090-9894-9242 www.plasticfactory.jp/ If you want to delve deeper into the Nag at Nite scene, here’s a few smaller clubs we recommend: Steps Out Records Club Buddha Radix Steps in Sakae, right across the street from iD. Those with a nervous disposition regarding gushing compliments should look away now. Have you ever been in a situation where you knew that something was too good for you? Maybe you fluked your way into a relationship with someone way out of your league. Perhaps you stumbled into a handsomely paid job for which you were grossly under-qualified. What do you do in these situations? You keep schtum and hope that you don’t get found out. This was precisely why I sat in Ginza Ashibe in Meieki, quieter than a church mouse who had taken a vow of silence at the Squeakless Monastery for Particularly Quiet Mice. Ginza Ashibe is regarded as one of the best dining experiences in Nagoya, particularly for impressing on first dates. As someone more used to burgers and beer (I rely on wit and charm rather than ambiance on dates. I am rarely successful), I was way out of my comfort zone amongst the plush finery and decadence. Fortunately I was set at immediate ease by welcoming restaurant manager Oya-san. The first dish for which I was undeserved was an obanzai selection, traditional Kyoto cuisine, simply made with seasonal seafood and vegetables. Like good home cooking, as Oya-san explained. There were five dishes in total: fried eggplant boiled and baked in sake; burdock with carrot and konyaku; sweet ayu fish boiled in soy sauce and eel and yam baked 18 NAGMAG in yuba tofu curd. And in the centre of it all was popcorn shrimp. This was nothing like home cooking as I know it (sorry mum!). Now I feel I should add a disclaimer. Eggplant and konyaku are pretty high up on my ‘foods not to be touched with a barge pole’ list, so I gave those dishes an initial wide berth, opting instead for the shrimp that was lightly curried and so immediately addictive that I was unable to stop at three. The ayu was next and the sticky sauce only served to exponentially enhance the sweetness of the fish. I followed this with the yuba wraps that were also sweet and oozing with a yammy goodness that was elbowed slightly by the subtlest hint of eel that was neither overpowering nor undersold. At last I approached the burdock and konyaku combination that, spicy and a little smoky, caught me totally off guard. Emboldened, I dived in to the aubergine which knocked my socks off with such force it nearly sent my converse skittering across the elegant room such was the gentle flavour created by the delicate sake. To cleanse my palette Oya-san brought out a veritable forest of chilled salad sticks to be dipped in a gorgeous bagna càuda (Italian garlic and anchovy dip). I scooped mountains of the stuff with celery and carrot, finishing the whole pot on my own despite it being a sharing dish. Bad, gluttonous Mark. I presumed I would be back on more comfortable territory with the sushi, but again the mango and salmon California rolls were not like anything I had encountered before. The subtly sweet mango gave the salmon a rounded flavour, but what really set them apart was the sublime butteryness of the avocado that juxtaposed so delightfully with the puchi puchi texture of the fish roe, a new sensation to me that was as revelatory as it was moreish. I ate three. Bad, bad, gluttonous Mark! Then came the pièce de résistance: Ashibe’s world-famous wagyu steak. Less marbled than Japanese wagyu, the grilled shinshin steak was just how I expected: red and bloody within, subtly charred without, and to say it melted in the mouth is as clichéd as it is inaccurate. This steak dissolved on the tongue, it evaporated, it broke down to a molecular level. It was simply transcendental. Well, that was me done, and again I was cowed into silence. But this time it was nothing to do with being overawed by the low-lit decadence around me, nor was it to do with being undeserving of such a dining experience. Instead, my church-mousery was simply a result of my senses – both taste and touch – quivering in a gastronomically induced wreck. This July, it re-opened with a new name and a new look: Aloha Dining Lure’s Lana. Thankfully, the team didn’t tamper with their winning formula. Rather, they added some fun new stuff: There are some tasty-looking new additions to the burger menu, ranging from a big slab of sirloin steak sandwiched between two buns, to another with three different kinds of cheese. Yes, three different kinds. Being my boring self, I went with the same burger I get every time I visit: the avocado cheese burger, a burger with avocado and cheese. It was yummy as always, but was packing a surprise between its buns (that’s what she said?). 20 NAGMAG The size of the beef patty has jumped from a satisfying 110gm to a beefier 130gm. It’s a big change to the burger-salad-buns equation, and one out of one burger reviewers (that’s 100%!) agree that it’s a good one. I chose a drink off Lure’s new Hawaiian menu to accompany my burger, the Pineapple Lassi. It shocked my system - so used to a fluid intake consisting of a soup of beer, coffee, and Coke Zero - with it’s awesome healthfulness: fresh pineapple, basil seeds (like the opposite day version of those tapioca balls that come with pearl milk tea at first), and a bunch of other stuff served in a Mason jar for style points. As an aside, my five-year old thinks this place is the bomb because he likes the food, and more importantly, their bookshelf with a big enough selection of picture books and magazines to keep him entertained. It’s a nice touch, and he always asks to visit for lunch. So we do!
