Caring for our Coastal Environment

Caring for our Coastal Environment
Our coastline is made up of diverse environments and plant communities. Threats to coastal
vegetation include weed invasion, visitor impacts from inappropriate recreational activities
including illegal camping, urban storm water runoff and urban encroachment, illegal rubbish
dumping and erosion.
Clarence Estuary Nature Reserve is located adjacent to the town of Yamba. The reserve
contains important wetland and coastal vegetation communities which provide significant habitat
for a range of species including threatened plants and animals. It is locally, regionally and
internationally significant for shorebirds and is listed on the Register of National Estate and the
National Directory of Important Wetlands. It is culturally significant to the Yaegl Aboriginal people.
As a local resident and / or a regular visitor to Yamba we need your help to look after our coastal
environments
What you can do to help ?

Learn about your garden and know which plants could be
weedy and spread quickly. Replace weeds with bushland
friendly alternatives.

Dispose of garden and other waste responsibly. Do not
dump over the back fence in the bush or on roadsides.

Use only designated tracks when walking to the beach.
Informal tracks can contribute to erosion, damage native
vegetation and cause weed invasion.

Plant local native species or non-invasive exotic species in
gardens.

Keep your dog out of national parks, nature reserves and
areas where dogs are prohibited.

Join a dune care, landcare or volunteer shorebird group .
This project has been assisted by the New South Wales Government through its Environmental Trust

Restoring our coast with
bush regeneration
Environmental weeds are plants which
have a negative impact on the
environment by destroying habitat or
over-running native species. The
survival of many native plants and
animals is threatened as weeds
compete with native plants for space,
nutrients and sunlight. Many of our
worst environmental weeds are garden
escapees.
Bush regeneration involves strategic
control of weeds to encourage native
plants to regenerate. Landcare and
EnviTE Environment bush regenerators
are working in partnership with NSW
National Parks and Wildlife Service to
restore native vegetation communities.
Ecological restoration provides long
term benefits for native vegetation
communities, fauna, including shorebird
habitat and erosion control.
What is a weed ?
A weed is a plant growing in the wrong
place. Weeds are generally fast growing,
disease resistant and reproduce easily by
distribution of seeds or other plant parts.
There are many garden escapees causing
problems in our
coastal areas. Avoid
planting these in
your garden:
 Glory Lily
 Ochna
