Are you burnt out or fed up?
Johannesburg, July 2008 – How many of us wake up in the morning feeling
drained and unmotivated about the day ahead? How often do we ask: is this all that
lies ahead for the next 10 or 20 years? How did I get here? Why does life feel like a
chore? Why don’t I have any direction?
Ironically, it’s often the most driven and dedicated people that find themselves
asking these questions. Whether we are the CEO of a top company, the stay-athome mom devoted to her children, the graduate stepping into the working world for
the first time, the highflying career women or the entrepreneur determined to carve
his own path, we all find ourselves somehow unfulfilled no matter how great our
achievements are.
Putting the Pebbles in First is a book for those who want to find balance, fulfilment
and happiness. Authors Taryn Sydow and Michele Wickham believe that true balance
and fulfilment only happens when we align our needs, values, talents and beliefs
with what we do in this world, both in our personal lives and in our professions. “This
is where you find your Personal Place of Balance”, says Taryn Sydow. “When you are
able to live your life from this space, you will have the energy to live in a state of
happiness and to take on life’s challenges without feeling overwhelmed.”
Taryn has personally learnt some hard lessons around the dangers of not having
balance in life and truly believes that balance is not about time management – it is
about ensuring that you stay true to yourself and do the things that give you
energy; the hard part is finding out what these things are. She believes that balance
is completely unique for each person and can only be obtained through a journey of
self-discovery.
Michele is married with two young children and often finds herself in the position of
trying to juggle her roles of mother and wife, while fulfilling her career aspirations. It
was after meeting so many other people, men and women alike, who faced the same
challenges, that she became involved in the work that led to the writing of this book.
Michele constantly works on maintaining her balance, and helping others find theirs.
She is also passionate about research in this area, realising that the world in which
we live, and the lives we lead present new challenges to us every day. "Most people
I talk to make a real and valuable contribution, whether it is through their work,
their family, or through community involvement. But it is very difficult to unlock
passion, creativity and initiative when we are stressed, burnt out or doing work that
is unfulfilling."
Taryn and Michele are inspirational, and Putting the Pebbles in First will walk you
through the steps to discover your values, beliefs, dreams and support systems. You
will also discover that there is a difference between life lived as a human being and a
life lived as a ‘human doing’.
