About:
This tab will provide a summary of the current underlying theory and science of side menu
topics. It will include the significant parameters that affect the topics and highlight any
knowledge gaps. The 'About' tab will provide the following types of information depending
on the side menu topic selected:
- Definitions of the different process involved in biochar production
- Definitions of the types of technology available for various processes involved in biochar
production.
- The significant operating parameters that affect biochar production.
- A guideline on the types of feedstock available
- Soil characterisation and the relationship to biochar mechanisms
- The types of applications and field trials that biochar is currently being used.
- A guideline to the significant parameters that affect the economics of biochar production.

Case Studies and Field Trials:
This tab will provide a summary of en existing application or field trial that demonstrates
the side menu topic. Users would have the opportunity to comment on case studies or
submit their own case study or explanation of field trial within a rigid template. Latest
results from field trials or case studies could be posted as comments. It is anticipated that
some side menu topics might link to the same case studies.
The following case studies will be included depending on the side menu topic selected:
- Technology case studies will demonstrate where various types of technology have been
trialed or used
- Case studies demonstrating different types of feed stocks for different types of soils
under certain operating conditions
- Characterisation of feed stocks, biochar's produced and soils
- Economic models

Design Tools:
This tab would provide specific design tools relevant to the side menu topics. This would
most likely be through standard template files that can be downloaded. Users could submit
modifications or suggestions to the design tools. These changes would be taken into
consideration by the tools originator and new versions added as a result of changes. Users
could upload new tools as well.
Design Tools for side menu topics could include:
Applications:
•Mass and energy balance templates
•Economic analysis tools for application scenarios (e.g. best economic use of coproducts for application)
•Application specification template
Technologies:
•Process Flow Diagrams
•Mass and energy balance templates
•Datasheets for equipment
•Specifications for specific equipment
Material Properties:
•Matrix comparing Feedstock with Biochar properties and soil applications
•Economic analysis tool (e.g economics for feedstock vs end use)
Economics:
•Economic comparison analysis tools

Discussion Board:
This page provides the opportunity for users to freely discuss issues related to the
side menu topic. Discussions would cover questions, design issues, latest field
results, field experiences etc. Topics may be posted by moderators, or users may be
able to submit topics via a rigid template forming a new discussion topic. Users can
respond to topics freely. The discussion area would also provide means for posting
revised documents that might be downloaded from the design tools area. Scenarios
could also be proposed in this area for design development. Information from the
discussion area would be moderated and assessed to update the other tabs with the
latest information and design tools.
