Girls Basketball Players - Kettle Moraine Lutheran High School

Girls Basketball Players in 5th, 6th, 7th & 8th Grades:
The Kettle Moraine Lutheran Girls Basketball program would like provide an opportunity for girls to have fun with
future classmates, improve their basketball skills, and further prepare themselves for high school basketball by
participating in the Junior Charger Girls Basketball Program. Our Junior Charger teams will participate in three or four
local weekend tournaments in March and April and they will play in a summer league with games once a week. The
coaches of each team will schedule practice dates, times, and locations for February–April and June-July. The Girls
Junior Charger program will not require exclusive participation in basketball, but it does require a commitment of
participants to attend most practices and games.
One of the goals of the Jr. Chargers is to provide higher level play for girls who enjoy basketball. Parents and coaches
should honestly evaluate the interest level of a player before the decision to participate is made. We are planning on
having an 8th grade team, a 7th grade team, a 6th grade team, and a 5th grade team. If the interest provides too many
players we will limit the team size with cuts. If there are more than 20 girls interested and a coach can be found, a
second team may be created. Please understand that your child may face a try out in order to provide a higher level of
basketball than is available through all-inclusive grade school basketball teams.
Sunday, December 7th and Saturday, December 13th are the primary tryout dates. Both sessions will be held at KML. On
December 7th, the 5th and 6th grades will practice from 1:00-2:30 P.M. and the 7th and 8th grade will practice from 2:304:00 P.M. For the December 13th practices, 5th and 6th grade will go from 8:30-10:00 A.M. and 7th and 8th will go 10:15Noon. If your child cannot make either of these practice dates please contact Coach Walz for workable alternatives. It
is optimal to have the girls attend both of the tryout days. After teams are determined you will be notified via email of
practice schedules and tournament dates.
There is a $150.00 fee that is due on the first practice after the team selections are made. This fee will pay for gym use,
the tournament fees (about $175 per event) and summer league fees ($600). There is an additional $35 uniform fee for a
new jersey. If you are a past participant of the Jr. Chargers you may use the same uniform. On the following page you
will find an application form for all girls interested in joining the Girls Junior Charger Program. Please fill the
registration out and return it as soon as possible and no later than December 1.
We are confident that every girl who participates in the Girls Junior Charger Program will have a fun learning
experience that will help them to prepare for high school basketball. If you have any questions or concerns or you
would like to know more about the Girls Junior Charger Program, do not hesitate to contact me.
God go with you,
Coach Walz

Girls’ Jr. Charger Basketball Program
Mission: “Empowered by God’s Word, Kettle Moraine Lutheran High School educates, encourages,
and equips God’s people for life and for eternity.”
Objectives: Our program provides a fun atmosphere of learning. Girls have the opportunity to learn
and improve their basketball skills and further prepare themselves for participation in the KML High
School Girls Basketball Program.
Team Selection: We will run at least one team for 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade. If there are more than 12
players interested for one grade’s team it may be necessary to limit the numbers for participation. If
interest provides more than 20 players at a grade level we will form a second team for the grade level.
At the 5th and 6th grade level the teams will be split by talent and other considerations like geography,
school, and position played. At the 7th and 8th grade level teams will be split by talent. Please
understand that your child may face a tryout. We do not want to hurt anyone’s feelings; however cuts
may be necessary in order to provide a higher level of basketball than is available through all-inclusive
grade school basketball programs. Participation in the Jr. Charger program does not guarantee future
participation in the KML High School Program, nor will it exclude any from participation in the KML
High School Program.
Tournaments: The KML Girls Jr. Charger program involves a spring portion composed of about 4
local tournaments. The majority of these tournaments will involve one day of the weekend. Whenever
possible the tournaments will be on Saturday. In some cases, Sunday participation is required. On those
rare occasions, we place a greater importance on church attendance than tournament attendance. The 5th
and 6th grade teams will not participate in tournaments where overnight lodging is required. If the 7th
and 8th grade teams find that the vast majority of parents are interested, overnight tournaments are a
possibility.
Expense: There is a flat fee required for playing with the Jr. Chargers. The fee goes to pay for
tournament entries, summer league fees, and gym rental fees. We try hard to keep the fees to a
minimum and do not want anyone to be excluded due to financial reasons. If finances cause a hardship,
please notify Coach Walz for possible solutions. In the near future, we will be hosting some fund raisers
to further subsidize the Jr. Charger Program.
Playing Time: Every player on a Jr. Charger team will be given equal practice time. Each player will
get quality playing time in every event. That does not mean every player will play the same amount of
game time. It means that every player will play significant and important minutes in a tournament day
or summer league day. If a coach cannot find quality time for a player in the first game of the day, it is
expected that the player would be given significant playing time in the remaining game or games.
Schedules: Tournament and practice schedules will be set by the individual coaches. Coaches are
encouraged to avoid scheduling Sunday tournaments whenever possible. If Sunday activities are
scheduled for practice and/or game times, reasonable efforts will be made to avoid family worship time.
Priorities: We do expect commitment of the player to attend as many of the practices and games as
possible. We need to be able to depend on the participation of all the team members in order to have a
successful program. In the rare event that there is a conflict of commitment that cannot be resolved, we
think that Church and worship deserves the highest priority. Family commitments come second. School
activities such as games, practices, rehearsals and performances come third followed by the commitment
to Jr. Chargers.
Questions or Concerns: All questions and/or concerns may be directed to KML Girls Basketball
Varsity Coach Jason Walz. E mail: jason.walz@kmlhs.org. Phone: 262.677.4051 x 1152.
