“First we shape our buildings, then they shape us, then we shape them again-ad infinitum” Stewart Brand “Only a fool will build in defiance of the past. What is new and significant always must be grafted to old roots, the truly vital roots that are chosen with great care from the ones that merely survive. And what a delicate process it is to distinguish radical vitality from the wastes of mere survival, but that is the only way to achieve progress instead of disaster." Bartok, 1962 Two quotes which I believe represent encapsulate my orientation of architectural intent. In today's dynamic culture of life and life style, it is important to develop new and elastic methods, metaphor and design practice. At the foundation of all new elastic design methodology lies memory, once memory is defined then the process can bend and flex to accommodate change. One such design approach involves the process of working with memory and the building's 'DNA' to help generate new design solutions. When the 'DNA' is understood, we can explore design in a scientific or medical manner. Genetic modification, bio mechanics, plastic surgery and psychology become possible design drivers especially for our old, sick and disabled buildings which struggle to accommodate a changing lifestyle.......FMH The Bentley Community (UKI) Key Note Lecture: BENTLEY COMMUNITY (UK) EDINBURGH CONFERENCE Title: A user’s experience, working with Bentley W ORKSHOP-LEADER Master Class and Workshop Interior Architecture [The Netherlands] 28nd Feb – 3 March Key Note Lecture: EMBODIED ENERGY ANDRE-USE http://www.stjoost.nl/nl/masters/newsByGroup/7/0/704 Breda Bezoekadres Beukenlaan e info.akvstjoost@avans.nl International Seminar Antwerp Belgium [Higher institute of Architecture sciences, Henry Van De Velde] [annually] International workshop in Collaboration with the Centre for Timber 9 Engineering, Edinburgh Napier University Interior Design, St. Joost, Breda, The Netherlands PUBLICATION REVIEWER &ASSESSMENT Reviewer for Laurence King Publishing Ltd, 361-373 City Road, London EC1V 1LR, UK A History of Western Architecture [4th Addition] by David Watkin ISBN: 978185669459 A History of Interior Design [3rd Edition] by John Pile ISBN: 9781856695961 Drawing For Interior Designer by Drew Plunkett ISBN: 9781856696227 Architectural Model Making by Nick Dunn ISBN: 9781856696708 Lighting Design by Malcolm Inness [Not Published] INVITED RESEARCH PAPER REVIEWER and ASSESSOR: IFW Conference Milan & Publication ISBN 978-88-464-9975-2 & IDEA Conference Interior Spaces in Other Places (2010) An Interior Design/Interior Architecture Educators Association (IDEA) Symposium http://www.interiorspacesinotherplaces.com E-ARCHITECT WEB SITE EDITORIAL BOARD E-Architect [2nd largest architectural web site in the world] Robin Cross, Dan Frydman, Frazer Macdonald Hay, Isabelle Lomholt, Andrew McRae, Tom Ravenscroft, Mario Segovia, Adrian Welch e-architect http://www.e-architect.co.uk/aboutus.htm Edinburgh Architeture.co.uk http://www.edinburgharchitecture.co.uk Glasgow Architecture.co.uk http://www.glasgowarchitecture.co.u RESEARCH CENTRE Director of a [profit making] Research & Knowledge Transfer Centre [Centre for the Recycling and Reuse of Buildings] CRRB http://www.fifeconstructionforum.com/uploadedfiles/files/CIAC%20overview.pdf 10 http://www.recyclingandreuseofbuildings.com/ Responsibilities: Project coordinator & assessor Team co-ordinator Accounts PR & Marketing collaboration with Professional Practice Cross school collaboration with other centres Member of The Research and Knowledge Transfer Committee [CCCIR] & [Built Environment] Consultancy Exhibitions Cultural Engagement Community Engagement Practice Income generation Lottery Grant application £1.5million CPD Post Graduate support EDUCATION Edinburgh College of Art, UK MSc Architectural Conservation Napier University Edinburgh, UK PGCERT Higher Education Napier University Edinburgh, UK B.A. [First Class] HONS Int. This will measure and validate their professional skills. Suitable supporting information will be held on a database, which will also contain details of specific services offered by each member and associated information (e.g. relevant experience, links to relevant website etc.) • To formulate and then implement proposals for a programme of formal examinations to assess and regulate the experience and skill of prospective 14 practitioners. SBID will immediately set up a working party to progress this initiative with a view to submitting formal proposals for acceptance by the membership of SBID at a general meeting to be held no later than two years after the initial establishment of SBID. The proposals will include the arrangements for the administration and independent marking and monitoring of all examination papers through a partnering organisation. • To establish a continuing professional development programme for all members. To provide career guidance for members in various areas such as job applications, legal procedures for the provision of services and procurement advice including how to tender for commercial projects etc. • To represent the interior design profession, lobbying and liaising with UK and EU government departments and agencies and other relevant bodies. • On key issues affecting the industry and interface with the media, trade associations and education establishments. • To create a members` forum to facilitate the exchange of views and feedback to SBID. 15
