First we shape our buildings, then they shape us, then we shape

“First we shape our buildings, then they shape us, then we shape them again-ad infinitum”
Stewart Brand
“Only a fool will build in defiance of the past. What is new and significant always must be grafted to old roots,
the truly vital roots that are chosen with great care from the ones that merely survive. And what a delicate
process it is to distinguish radical vitality from the wastes of mere survival, but that is the only way to achieve
progress instead of disaster."
Bartok, 1962
Two quotes which I believe represent encapsulate my orientation of architectural intent.
Yours Sincerely
Frazer Macdonald Hay

Theme Design for Changing Lifestyle
Key Note Speaker: Frazer Macdonald Hay
Title: An Elastic Approach .
In today's dynamic culture of life and life style, it is important to develop
new and elastic methods, metaphor and design practice.
At the foundation of all new elastic design methodology lies memory, once
memory is defined then the process can bend and flex to accommodate
change.
One such design approach involves the process of working with memory
and the building's 'DNA' to help generate new design solutions. When the
'DNA' is understood, we can explore design in a scientific or medical
manner. Genetic modification, bio mechanics, plastic surgery and
psychology become possible design drivers especially for our old, sick and
disabled buildings which struggle to accommodate a changing
lifestyle.......FMH

FURTHER INFORMATION
The Society for British Interior Design [SBID] Approached me and I accept a
position on the Executive Board and Educational Board as Chair in 2010 /11
with the view to facilitate and develop key objectives and aims, with Interior
Design education as its foundation :•
To enhance professional standards in the interior design sector and to
promote best practice
•
To establish a UK-wide individual accreditation system for individual
interior designers. This will measure and validate their professional skills.
Suitable supporting information will be held on a database, which will also
contain details of specific services offered by each member and associated
information (e.g. relevant experience, links to relevant website etc.)
•
To formulate and then implement proposals for a programme of formal
examinations to assess and regulate the experience and skill of prospective
14
practitioners. SBID will immediately set up a working party to progress
this initiative with a view to submitting formal proposals for acceptance
by the membership of SBID at a general meeting to be held no later than
two years after the initial establishment of SBID. The proposals will
include the arrangements for the administration and independent marking
and monitoring of all examination papers through a partnering
organisation.
•
To establish a continuing professional development programme for all
members. To provide career guidance for members in various areas such
as job applications, legal procedures for the provision of services and
procurement advice including how to tender for commercial projects etc.
•
To represent the interior design profession, lobbying and liaising with UK
and EU government departments and agencies and other relevant bodies.
•
On key issues affecting the industry and interface with the media, trade
associations and education establishments.
•
To create a members` forum to facilitate the exchange of views and
feedback to SBID.
