REF 2014: full inclusion
REF 2020: 3 journal articles accepted for publication
Current Projects & Future Research

"Leadership Styles of Prime Ministers: How Individual Differences Affect the Policy
Making Process"
This project includes a number of research tracks, including more publications from the
research collected in the collaborative project on beliefs and styles (focusing on 7
personality traits) of Turkish prime ministers and presidents funded by the Scientific and
Technological Research Council of Turkey. In the collaborative project, we are working on
several articles and a book manuscript. I intend to extend this study to other world leaders
(including financial executives) across the 7 traits as well as 3 basic personality
motivations.

"Contested National Role Conceptions"
This project extends my prior theoretical and empirical analyses of internal disagreements
over national role conceptions and their influence on foreign policy and applications of
role theory to Turkey, the UK and Scotland. I am currently co-editing (with Cristian
Cantir) a book on this topic with case studies from over eight countries.

“Coalition Cabinets in Foreign Policy, Governance, & International Politics”
My research continues to examine the effects of coalition cabinets on politics. This project
also includes plans to convene workshops to develop an edited volume on this topic. I am
also involved in an international network of scholars and practitioners on a related topic on
political parties and foreign policy and am currently writing a paper on coalition cabinets
responses to international norms, and co-authoring papers on the UK House of Commons
August 2103 vote on the conflict in Syria and on the comparative role of historical
precedents in parliamentary influence in foreign policy. I am also co-writing a proposal
for funding of a knowledge-exchange oriented seminar series on coalition politics and
foreign policy.
 "Role Development and Socialization: Scotland's Pre-Independence Experience"
This project builds on recent developments in role theory to examine how internal political
actors define their state's role (and identity) in the world and how external, international
actors attempt to shape role development. The empirical focus is Scotland's experience
leading up to the 2014 referendum and the effects on Scotland's relations with others in the
immediate post-referendum period.

“Social Media and International Politics”
This project builds on my consultancy work on “An Exploration and Analysis of the Role
of Digital Communications and Social Media in the UK’s International Connectivity and
Soft Power,” for the British Council. Working with colleagues in Informatics at the Centre
for University of Edinburgh we are exploring a range of ways in which international digital
connectivity can be tracked and its impact on global political relations can be assessed.

Teaching Experience
Breadth: I have taught more than 55 semester-length courses on more than 15 different
topics.
Innovative Teaching: My classes go beyond providing basic information on the topic and
stress theoretical, critical, and interdisciplinary analyses. I incorporate structured debates,
policy briefs, and role-playing simulations in my classes to generate interest and
internalization of the material. I have introduced the ‘fish-bowl’ method in large
classrooms to facilitate discussion (small numbers of different students are rotated into the
‘fish-bowl’ each week and are responsible for answering questions and making comments
on course material; other students are on the perimeter and learn from the small group’s
interactions).
Pedagogical Outcomes: Successful undergraduates leave my classes as better-informed
global citizens with enhanced writing, research, and presentation skills to prepare them for
a range of careers in law, politics, public policy, or international relations. At the graduate
level, I focus on providing research skills that will serve students in academic and nonacademic environments. I consistently receive excellent evaluations at all levels of
teaching.
