If you’ve taken the time to complete a check of
your household’s water use, you’ll have a good
idea of how many litres each person uses every day.
Take a look at what the scores mean for you.

Congratulations! You’re already
making a massive difference to
your local community, businesses
and wildlife. Thank you.
You’re so close! Start dropping

Your water use is around the
average. Use the tips in this leaflet
to help reduce the amount you
use.
It looks like your water use is well
over the average. Take a look at
the tips in this leaflet and share
them with everyone in your house.
Even the smallest changes will
make a big difference to everyone
in the region.

EVERY DAY.
At home, we each use an
average of 133 litres of water
a day. And some of that
is wasted through things
like inefficient appliances
or dripping taps. So we’re
asking everyone to try and
drop that amount by 20
litres, every day. Imagine if
everyone in your house, your
street and your community
dropped 20 litres, every
single day – the equivalent of
2 full buckets. That’s a lot of
water saved for tomorrow.
start here
This leaflet has all the advice you
need for everyone in your house
to start dropping 20 litres every
day. Please follow our tips and
advice, tell your neighbours, go
online and share your ideas, and
help spread the word.
How to start Dropping 20
Start by having a meter - pay for
what you use and not a drop more.
A meter measures the water you
use, so you only pay for what you
use. On average customers with
a water meter save around £100
a year. It can also help to save
water - and that’s really important
as we live in the UK’s driest region
and resources are precious for
our communities, businesses and
wildlife.

A dripping tap can
waste over 3 litres of
water every day. That’s
over 1,000 litres a year.
Every drop of water has its own
history. Some flows directly into
rivers, whereas some filters through
soils into deep aquifers. But there
are more of us now wanting to use
each drop than ever before. It’s
vital that everyone does their bit to
use only what they really need.
spot A LEAK at home
We’re doing our bit by making sure
there is enough water for everyone
but also that we’re not wasting
water too.
Step 3: if it hasn’t changed,
turn the stopcock back on. If
after another two minutes the
reading changes, you could
have an internal leak – call a
plumber.
DOING OUR BIT
Step 1: turn off all taps and
the stopcock. Check your
meter.
Step 2: if the reading’s
changed after 2 minutes, you
may have a leak – so give us a
call.
We have fewer leaks than ever before, and we are
pledging to do even more because it’s one of the
top priorities identified by customers. We will be
spending £22 million each year from 2015-2020
to send out our leak technicians around the region
to find and fix leaks. This will also include pressure
management schemes which is the root cause
of having leaks in our system. But leaks don’t just
occur in pipes underground. They can happen
at home too.

water-efficient products
Our homes aren’t always as
water efficient as we imagine.
Washing machines which
are turned on when they are
only half full or a leaky tap
can waste lots of water. Have
a quick check around your
kitchen and you could be
dropping 20 litres before
you know it.
The next time you buy a washing
machine or dishwasher, first have
a look to see how much water they
use per cycle. Many machines now
use water much more efficiently,
saving you water energy and
money.
FACT
Only using
your washing
machine when
it’s full will save
water, energy
and money.

Every time you flush,
shower or bathe, you’re
using fresh drinking water.
So it makes sense to think
about how you use it and
why. For example your taps
might be dripping or the
toilet leaking. To check for a
leaky toilet put a few drops
of food dye in the cistern
and if after a while the colour
runs into the pan there is
a leak. Call an approved
plumber from the link at the
bottom of this page.

boilers and other machinery can all
leak. You can check them visually
yourself, but proper regular checks
should be made by an Anglian
Water A-plus approved supplier.
All A-plus plumbers have
undergone an assessment test to
ensure they have an understanding
of the Water Supply (Water
Fittings) Regulations 1999. You can
request a certificate for any work
carried out for added reassurance.
Try filling your bath
only two-thirds full,
instead of to the rim.

We all love beautiful gardens and clean cars. But there are
ways of using water outdoors without wasting 1,000s of litres.
For example, you don’t need to water your lawn if it’s brown.
A good downpour will soon bring it back to life. And poking
it with a garden fork in the autumn will improve drainage.
Planting drought-resistant plants and watering with a can at
the roots will help keep things blooming too.

Working out how much
water your household uses
will help you keep track of
how much you’re dropping,
and where you could make
more savings.
Use the table below to work out how
much water your household uses in

people living in your home to work
out your personal water use.
