SQUASH ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
To be eligible to compete in the 2011 Arafura Games Squash Events a squash player must be, at the
closing date for entries of 1 April 2011:



an amateur player; or
PSA member with a ranking greater than 250; or
WISPA member with a ranking greater than 120.
NT PLAYERS
There is no entry fee to enter the Arafura Squash Event. However all NT players will need to meet the
conditions and requirements outlined below.
Players from Gove, Alice Springs and Tindal are eligible for selection. You will need to attend the Team
Selection trials on 4th to 6th March to be eligible for selection – Squash NT will subsidise travel and
accommodation costs for attendance at the trails.
TEAM EVENT
A team can be a maximum of 5 players of the same gender – with only 3 players contesting each tie.
Team Managers and Coaches will be responsible for selecting players to contest each tie.
The draw will be a round robin contested over the 5 days of the Squash Competition with the finals being
conducted on the final day of play.
A team who is undefeated will be declared the winner. In the event of no team going through the
competition undefeated, the team with the highest number of accumulated points will be declared the
winner. No finals will be held for the Team Event.
NT Representative Team
To be eligible for selection in the NT team a player must first meet the following criteria:
a) Be a financial member of either Darwin, Alice Springs, Tindal or Gove Squash Associations;
b) Have no outstanding financial obligations to their respective Squash Associations;
c) Be playing in the current Pennant conducted in their Region and have played at least 75% of ‘their
scheduled matches at the time of Selection;
d) Attend at least 80% of scheduled training sessions set down by the NT Arafura Coach
(interested players from Alice Springs, Tindal or Gove will be sent a specific training program and they
must be signed off by their respective Association to have met this criteria);
e) Be available to play in the Selection Trials to be conducted in Darwin from Friday 4th to Sunday 6th
March. (NB – play on Friday 4th will commence after 6pm).
Players from outlying regions will be required to travel to Darwin to be eligible for selection. Travel
costs will be subsidised by Squash NT.

f)
Be available to play all scheduled matches from Monday 9th May to Friday 13th May including both
Team and Individual Events (eg players will be expected to secure leave from their employment or
exemption from school activities for the duration of the squash program);
g) Compete in the Top End Open to be conducted in Darwin from Friday 6th to Sunday 8th May.
h) Attend the Arafura Games Opening Ceremony Parade of Athletes on Saturday 8th May.
Squash NT will advertise and select a Coach and Manager for the NT Arafura Team and the successful
applicants will be announced mid-January 2011.
Training sessions for players will commence in the final week of January. Players will be expected to pay
50% of the negotiated court hire rate for all training sessions up until the scheduled Selection Trials. Once
the team has been announced team member’s training sessions will be covered by Squash NT.
Unsuccessful players may choose to continue to attend training sessions and pay 50% of the negotiated
court hire rate if they intend to contest the individual event set out below.
Team members will be required to purchase the Arafura Team Uniform. The appointed Manager will work
with the athletes to reduce these costs by conducting fundraising activities. It is anticipated that the uniform
cost will be in the vicinity of $80 (including 2 shirts and walk out shorts).
All players contesting for a position in the NT Representative Team will receive full details of the selection
criteria on the first scheduled training session in January.
Players from Gove, Alice Springs and Tindal selected in the NT Representative Team will receive travel
and accommodation subsidies to attend the Arafura Games. Accommodation may be with billeting
families.
INDIVIDUAL EVENT
An Individual Event will be held for both Men and Women. The individual events will consist of a Main
Event and single Plate Event only. Players will be guaranteed only 2 matches.
The Individual Event will be held from Monday 7th to Friday 13th culminating in the Men’s and ‘Women’s
Finals on the Friday evening prior to the Medal Ceremony for all events.
Eligibility for NT Players
All NT players who meet the Arafura Squash Eligibility Criteria, and
a) is a financial member of either Darwin, Alice Springs, Tindal or Gove Squash Associations; and
b) have no outstanding financial obligations to their respective Squash Associations;
are eligible to play in the Individual Events.
Players wishing to contest the Individual Event will need to meet the Accreditation Requirements set out
below.
Individual players may attend the Opening Ceremony Parade of Athletes as part of the NT Squash Team
provided they purchase and wear the official Arafura Walk Out uniform.
This Walk Out Uniform is designed by the Arafura Games Organising Committee. All uniform orders need
to be lodged and paid for in full to the Arafura Squash Coordinator by Tuesday, 8th March.

SPORT VOLUNTEERS
To ensure the Squash Event is appropriately managed and organised Squash NT are seeking expressions
of interest from any person from the Darwin community who is available to assist during the Arafura
Games.
Volunteers are required to take on responsibilities such as Media Liaison Officer, Assistant Coordinator,
Medal Presentation Coordinator, Sports Trainer, Squash Photographer, Social Events or general
operational duties.
Young persons between the age of 13 and 18 will be able to work for sports in a voluntary capacity in roles
appropriate to their age. They will be required to complete a registration form that is signed by a parent or
guardian before then can be formally accredited.
All Sport Specific volunteers will be required to attend Arafura Games Workforce General Training, attend
Squash Specific Meeting, meet the Accreditation requirements set out below and obtain a NT Government
Ochre Card which will become a legislative requirement as of 1 March 2011.
The Ochre Card will be mandatory for all volunteers over 15 years of age. Further details on the Ochre
Card will be provided at a later date. Volunteers will be able to apply for an Ochre Card through Squash
NT and the Arafura Games Organising Committee. You do not have to go out and get it yourself unless it
is a requirement of your current employment.
NT Government employees may have the opportunity to be seconded to the Arafura Games for the
duration of the Squash Competition at the discretion of the Squash Coordinator. If you are a NTG
employee and wish to consider secondment please contact the Squash Coordinator for further information.
Accredited volunteers will be provided with the following:

free travel on dedicated Arafura shuttle services and Darwin Bus suburban bus services.
Volunteers must commit to at least 50% of the scheduled Squash program.
ACCREDITATION PROCESS
All participants, officials and volunteers of the Arafura Games must complete the registration process.
Accreditation for all NT players and Sport Volunteers will need to be completed by 1st April 2010.
No Squash player, official or volunteer is to accredit direct onto the Arafura Games Accreditation
System. All Squash player, official and volunteer accreditations will be coordinated and entered by the
Arafura Squash Organising Committee.
Players who wish to compete, whether they are selected in the NT Representative Team or compete in the
Individual Event, will need to provide details for accreditation to the Team Manager or Squash Coordinator
by 4pm on Sunday, 6th March.
All approved volunteers will also need to provide these details by this time.
Accreditation photos will be taken by a Squash NT representative for uploading to the website.
All accredited players, officials and volunteers provided with Arafura Games Accreditation will receive
