WG and VC Session Objectives and Content
• Under Point 6, SIT Chair briefly introduced Session 2
and defined the high-level objectives and strategic
goals that will be pursued during her mandate.
• On behalf of the SIT Chair team I shall now
• Outline in some more detail this session objectives and
content,
• Review the membership, composition and leadership of
VCs and WGs, and
• Provide a quick overview of the outcomes from VC-WG
telecons.

Objective #1: Synergy VCs & WGs
• Two lines of action aim at developing the desired synergy
between VCs and WGs
• Encourage more focused exchanges and collaboration
between the WGs and the VCs to support and develop the
VCs and thematic WGs
o Discussions initiated by Past SIT Chair and recent telecons
between SIT Chair Team, VCs and WGs helped identify several
areas of potential cross-collaboration
 I’ll come back to it later on
• Follow promising examples, such as
o WGCV and SST-VC
 We’ll hear more about it under agenda items 9 and 11
o WGISS support for WGDisaster Recovery Observatory
 We’ll hear more about it under agenda item 11 and during Session 4
o Production of ECVs by VCs interacting with WGClimate

Objective #2: focus on deliverables
• Two lines of action aim at focusing on VC & WG
deliverables:
• Interact with GEO during the development of the next
Implementation Plan/Work plan
o This topic is open for discussion under agenda item 12
• Seek alignment with GEOSS post 2015 10-year plan
o We’ll hear more about it under agenda item 9

Objective #3: broaden active participation
• Two lines of action aim at obtaining and/or strengthening the
involvement and active participation in VCs and WGs of CEOS
agencies holding key asset
• Engage more agencies into WG and VC leadership and
activities
o I’ll come back to it later on
o We’ll hear more about it under agenda items 9 and 11
• Revitalize the LSI-VC?
o Potential for enhanced coordination in land surface imagery at
“regional” level (e.g. South America, South-East Asia)?
o This topic is open for discussion under agenda item 10.
o Based on the outcomes of this discussion, the SIT Chair Team
will be preparing a position paper on that matter for presentation
at a later stage, perhaps at the SIT technical workshop in
September

Objective #4: linking VCs & Science
• Two lines of action aim at establishing and/or
improving the linkages between VCs and existing
relevant scientific such as GRSST, IOCCG, OSTST,
IPWG (Precipitation), etc.
• Identify gaps and/or hurdles in these linkages
• Work with the sponsors of the relevant scientific groups
with a view to build on complementarity, commonalities,
and to improve overall coordination and efficiency
o We’ll hear more about this under agenda item 9
o This topic will be open for discussion under item 12

Overview of VC-WG telecon outcome
• Eleven telecons were held in late January-early
February involving participation of SIT Chair and her
team (plus the CEO and a representative of CEOS
Chair) with the leaders of the five WGs and six VCs
• Three objectives were pursued
• Introduce and review the status and issues and
potential resolutions that may require SIT Chair support
• Continue the discussion on issues raised in sidemeetings or previous telecons
• Prepare SIT-29 discussions and subsequent action
• Swift exchange of views and actions identified
• Short reports on tag-up telecons available
