Composition 1 Portfolio Presentation Tom Milbrandt December 2000 Introduction • I think that as a writer, I still have a lot to learn. I know that I will never become a famous author or writer but I still wish to improve my writing style. I have learned how to cite sources and document my writing and also how to analyze an essay. • In this portfolio, you will see my writing and writing style on several different topics, including gun control and college life. Also, you will have hyperlinks to take you to different documentations. Changes/Skills Demonstrated • List 6 specific changes in writing or skills developed this semester. Four are required (see next slide); two are student options. • Use the language from the common course syllabus to identify some of the material to cover • Use the language from the Ability/Skill/Levels document—this is what the portfolio should demonstrate. • The above are two examples of hyperlinks. Changes in my Writing this Semester • • • • • I have learned to write an effective summary. I know how to cite sources correctly in my writing. I have learned four ways to organize essays. I know the essential features of a good thesis statement. Student option 1: I have learned some ways to reduce the wordiness of my sentences. • Student option 2: I have been introduced to the PowerPoint Format. I have learned to write an effective summary. • In writing a summary, you should tell what the story or essay was about. The length should be just long enough to get the point across. • My example of an effective summary-A tough time in my life. • Hyperlink back to Original Document. I know how to cite sources correctly in my writing. • I learned the “MLA” style of citing sources. It is very important to cite sources because it is unlawful to use an authors work without his or her consent. • My example of an essay in which sources were cited. • Hyperlink back to Original Document. I have learned four ways to organize essays. • Four examples of the essays that I’ve learned about so far are the Comparison and Contrast essay, the Persuasive essay, Definition Essay, and the Informative essay. • The essay I enjoyed writing the most is persuasion essay because I can freely voice my opinion while also telling facts. • Hyperlink back to Original Document. I know the essential features of a good thesis statement • A good thesis statement grabs the readers attention right away in the first sentence. It urges the reader to continue with the essay and begins to show your position on the subject. • In my essay about guns, thesis statement was “People do have the right to bear arms”. That grabs the readers attention because it talks about ones right. • Hyperlink back to Original Document. Student Option 1 • I have learned that the reduction of excessively using certain words (such as I, you, and, to, etc.) adds a lot to a piece of work. Try to get the point across without rambling on and on. • Hyperlink back to Original Document. Conclusion • Link to the expectations of the Writing Skill/Levels 1 & 2 . • My strengths consists of being able to write a very good essay no matter what the topic is on. My grammar has improved lots since the beginning of the semester. • In College Composition 2, I want to continue to improve on writing styles and in other aspects of the art of writing. I believe that when a person is open-minded, anything can be learned Writing Skill / Levels 1 & 2 • Level One: – Expresses clearly thoughts and ideas in informal writing contexts. – Composes structurally correct sentences in Standard American English. – Generates well-developed, coherent paragraphs. • Level Two: – Processes information to produce writing that clearly and accurately summarizes and/or reports. – Writes, well-developed, focused essays. – Searches for information and inserts research appropriately.
