GLEN HAVEN February 2010 ELEMENTARY SCHOOL First Grade News Reading Reading for Literary Experience This month we will continue to read for literary experience. We will learn about folktales and their characteristics (all folktales must have a lead, characters, setting, problem, solution, magic, trickery, repetition, important message, and 3’s). We will also compare different versions of the various folktales and make connections between the illustrations and the text. Writing Writing to Persuade This month students will learn to how persuade others through writing. The children will be able to take strategies they use orally and put them into words on paper. This can be hard to do, so a way to help is to practice at home with them. For example, ask your child to name his/her favorite animal and to verbally describe in detail why. Then have him/her write down the same reasons he/she just said to you.
