Then cut it open to reveal the seeds inside. Explain that new apple trees can grow from the small seeds. Next, work with children to trace the development of an apple backwards—from ripe fruit to bloom to bud and so on to its beginning as a tiny seed. Afterward, tell children that they will make an edible basket filled with apple-y treats. Finally, invite them to make the corresponding mini-book. Use all capital letters, all lowercase letters, or a combination of the two. Then make a large tree from bulletin board paper. Display the tree on a wall and add the apple cutouts. Preparing the Snacks Making the Mini-Books Color and cut out a copy of the recipe cards for the snack you want children to make. (Cut off the glue tabs for use as individual cards.) If desired, use an enlarged copy of the cards. Number the steps and laminate the cards. Post them, in sequence, in your snack-making center. Next, set out the ingredients, placing them from left to right and trying to keep each one near the recipe card that shows how to use that ingredient. Then point out and name each ingredient. Finally, read aloud and model each step to make the snack. You might also display a snack that you made in advance so children can see what the end result will be as they observe the snack coming together step by step. After the demonstration, review the steps once again to reinforce comprehension and invite questions or comments. After children make and enjoy their snack, give them a copy of the corresponding mini-book pattern and have them follow these simple directions to assemble their book. They can read their completed books with partners at school, then take them home to read and to make the snack with their families. Cut out the three sets of mini-book pages.
