GOALS: WHAT THEY ARE AND WHY YOU NEED THEM Freshman Meeting – October 2012 First, a REVIEW: Who is your counselor?  What is one thing school counselors do for students?  What do you need to do to graduate from NHS?  Learning Targets I can define three different types of goals (long-term, intermediate, short-term).  I can explain why it is important to have long-term, intermediate, and short-term goals.  I have written a specific, short-term goal for this trimester.  Goals are more than saying you want to do something… You must clearly define exactly what you want AND  Understand why you want it AND  Plan how you are going to get it.  I can define three different types of goals.  Long-term Goals  5-10  Intermediate Goals  1-5  years years Short-term Goals 1 day to 1 year I can define three different types of goals.  Long-term Goals are your “ultimate” goals that will take awhile for you to reach (5-10 years)  Graduate from college  Start a career as a photographer  Take over my family business  Become fluent in another language I can define three different types of goals. Intermediate Goals are goals that will take some time, but are big steps on the way to long-term goals (1-5 years)  Graduate from high school with a GPA of 3.8 or higher  Take World Language classes  Work part-time in the family business  Work at a photography studio I can define three different types of goals. Short-term Goals are goals that you will reach in a short amount of time and are the first steps toward your intermediate and long-term goals  Get on the “A” honor role  Register for advanced/AP classes  Pass all my classes/earn 18 credits  Register for a World Language class  Take and pass a photography class I can define three different types of goals. What are shortterm goals? I can explain why it is important to have long-term, intermediate, and short-term goals.  Setting goals gives you long-term vision and short-term motivation.  Long term goals help set your sights high  Intermediate goals guide your steps to achieving your dreams  Short-term goals keep you motivated  Achieving your goals can raise your self-confidence as you recognize your own abilities I can explain why it is important to have long-term, intermediate, and short-term goals. You must clearly define exactly what you want AND  Understand why you want it AND  Plan how you are going to get it.  Which job would you want?  Collect honey & pollinate?  Save those special drops of honey?  Test helmet technology?  Or just get worked to death?  YOU NEED A PLAN (short-term & intermediate goals) to REACH YOUR DREAM (long-term goal) I have a written a specific, short term goal for this trimester.  No writing: wait for directions! Trimester 1 Goal Suggestions:  Complete all homework ON TIME  Improve test scores in most challenging class  Join & participate in a club/sport/activity  Participate more frequently in class  Ask my teachers questions when confused  Stay after school for extra help twice a week  Earn a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 4.0  Grade Point Average (GPA) is the mathematical average of all your grades.  4.0=A 3.0=B 2.0=C 1.0=D QUESTIONS?
