the splitting of the atom, and the foundation

This is a time of celebration for all of us and
I very much hope that you find it an
enjoyable occasion. As each graduand is
presented for conferment of their degree, the
University shares with you all a great sense of
pride in the award they have worked so hard
to attain.
For those of you graduating today, these
ceremonies mark not the end of your
relationship with the University but the start
of a new stage. It is my hope that the links
between the University and you will grow
ever stronger and I look forward to you
becoming an active member of the
University’s alumni body.

The Faculty
of Engineering and Physical Sciences
The Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences
is large and comprehensive with nine component
schools: Chemical Engineering and Analytical
Science; Chemistry; Computer Science; Earth,
Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences;
Electrical and Electronic Engineering; Materials;
Mathematics; Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil
Engineering; and Physics and Astronomy.
Together they offer a diverse portfolio of research
and teaching of the highest quality.
Many of the major advances of the 20th century
began here, including the work by Rutherford
leading to the splitting of the atom and the
development of the world's first modern
computer. Today research activities remain at the
cutting-edge and the Faculty now generates
around £75 million in research funding a year.
The quality, breadth and volume of research
activity at the Faculty of Engineering and Physical
Sciences is unrivalled. There are more than 70
specialist research centres and groups at the
Faculty, each undertaking pioneering research
into areas ranging from nuclear decommissioning
and nanotechnology to artificial intelligence
and aerospace.
Research is at the heart of The University of
Manchester's Faculty of Engineering and Physical
Sciences. The 2008 Research Assessment Exercise
revealed outstanding results, with all of our
departments demonstrating international or
national excellence.
The Faculty
of Humanities
The Faculty of Humanities is the largest of the
University’s four Faculties, with a world-leading
reputation in research that spans academic areas
as diverse as the arts, international development,
modern languages, education, law, the social
sciences, business and management. With a total
income of around £190 million per annum,
around 18,000, students and some 1000
academic staff, it is equivalent to a medium-sized
university in the UK.
Major institutes and centres include the Centre
for New Writing, the Institute for Social Change,
the Brooks World Poverty Institute, Humanitarian
and Conflict Response Institute, the Manchester
Institute for Innovation Research, the Research
Institute for Cosmopolitan Cultures, the Centre
for Chinese Studies, the Institute for
Development Policy and Management, the

Centre for Equity in Education and the
Sustainable Consumption Institute.
In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise,
Humanities was behind only Oxford and
Cambridge in the number of world-leading staff
returned, classified as 4*. Of its activity, 22% was
classed as world-leading and a further 40% as
internationally excellent.
The Faculty
of Life Sciences
The Faculty of Life Sciences is a world-class
research establishment, recognised as an
international site of excellence in terms of
research power and importance in the latest
Research Assessment Exercise.
It is home to more than 1,000 researchers, over
2,000 undergraduate students and has an annual
budget in excess of £100 million.
Students benefit from modern facilities,
innovative teaching techniques and the
opportunity to be taught by leading experts from
across the breadth of the life sciences. The highly
interactive research and teaching environment
allows the Faculty to conduct the highest quality
research while maintaining an extensive range of
undergraduate and graduate programmes as well
as vocational training.
The Faculty's research fields include
environmental biology, disease biology,
neuroscience, genetics and zoology. There are
also world-leading researchers studying vision
science and the history of science, technology
and medicine.
Academics regularly have their work published in
leading scientific journals and significant
breakthroughs are consistently being made in the
understanding of a range of diseases.
Rapid advances in molecular and structural
biology, genomics and bioinformatics will ensure
that the life sciences continue to dominate
scientific discoveries in the 21st century.
The Faculty
of Medical and Human Sciences
The Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences has a
long and proud history of innovative teaching and
ground breaking research, and is one of the largest
faculties of clinical and health sciences in Europe.
The Faculty has five Schools Medicine, Dentistry,
Pharmacy, Psychological Sciences, and Nursing,
Midwifery and Social Work. It also has six Faculty
research-focussed institutes: Brain Behaviour and
Mental Health; Cancer Sciences, Cardiovascular
Sciences; Human Development; Inflammation and
Repair; and Population Health. The Faculty has
strong interdisciplinary links with other Schools,
Faculties and Institutes across the University,
including Life Sciences, Engineering and Physical
Sciences, Economic and Social Sciences, Education
and the Paterson Institute for Cancer Research.
The School of Medicine traces its past to the first
medical school established in England outside
London, while the School of Nursing was the first
British school to offer a degree in the subject;
similarly, Manchester was the first university to
award degrees in Pharmacy and was the first
university in Britain to appoint a full-time professor
of psychology; the first degree programme in
dentistry was introduced in 1904. The Faculty’s

performance in the 2008 Research Assessment
Exercise (RAE) reflects its strength across an entire
range of biomedical and clinical research areas
from laboratory-based investigations through to
studies of the impact
of discoveries on the health of the population.
There is a strong organisational capability for
undertaking cross-faculty teaching and research
activity in partnership with the public sector and
industry. For example, in around 450 community
placements/GP practices and 17 district hospitals,
the Faculty trains in excess of 450 doctors each
year. Similarly, in partnership with the NHS and
Health Education England, it provides continuing
professional development for 60,000 pharmacy
professionals in England.
Furthermore, teaching and research is spread over
a wide area with major links to Central
Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation
Trust, the Christie NHS Foundation Trust, Salford
Royal NHS Foundation Trust, University Hospital of
South Manchester NHS Foundation Trust, and
Manchester Mental Health and Social Care Trust.

BA in Commerce on August 3, 1943
– but because of the war was unable
to attend the graduation ceremony.
The graduate, originally from Neath
in South Wales but now living in
Mere Green, Sutton Coldfield,
studied from 1940 to 1943, but went
straight to help the war effort after
she finished.

Working in the ministry of aircraft
production founded by Lord
Beaverbrook, she carried out the task
of auditing in aircraft factories
manufacturing Wellington bombers.
Because she subsequently led a busy
work-life as a Lewis’s buyer and a
busy family life, and she never found
the time to attend a graduation
ceremony.
She has not been back to Manchester
since the war - except for a trip to
Jodrell Bank 50 years ago.
Shortly after Gene started her degree,
many of her fellow students
abandoned their studies to fight
overseas in the forces.
But she still remembers the air raids
which blighted the city, and especially
the devastation caused by a bomb
dropped in Christmas 1940 behind St
Gabriel’s church, close to where she
stayed.
Her 23-year-old granddaughter
Rachel, who studied for a Master’s
degree in Law, is also attending the
same graduation ceremony todayl.

The Whitworth Hall organ was built by Henry
Willis & Sons and installed in 1902. Its character
and specification would originally have been
similar to those of a large Victorian cathedral
organ. In 1962 it was overhauled by J. W. Walker
& Sons, who redesigned it in the then
fashionable neo-Baroque style. Fifty years on,
extensive maintenance work is again needed,

and the organ is currently being rebuilt by
David Wells of Liverpool. As well as essential
repairs to the wind system and pipework, the
organ is being modified tonally so that it regains
its original late Victorian grandeur and power.
In its new guise the organ will have 51 stops
over three manuals and pedals, and around
3,000 pipes.

During the course of this event no alarm test or an
emergency evacuation practice has been planned.
Therefore, if the alarm, which sounds intermittently is
activated it should be treated as a potential incident
requiring evacuation.
Graduands and Guests are asked to remain calm and
seated and follow the instructions given by
stewarding staff.
The Assembly point is on the front quadrangle which
is adjacent to the Whitworth Hall in front of the John
Owens Building.
