2017 RAYS MEDIA GUIDE NOW ONLINE—The 2017 Rays Media Guide
is now available online at RaysPressbox.com and MLBPressBox.com…a
limited number of hard copies are expected to arrive this week.
PLANNING YOUR DAY—Today the Rays clubhouse at Charlotte Sports
Park will be open from 8:15–9:15 and Manager Kevin Cash will be available pregame at LECOM Park in Bradenton…tomorrow the Rays play the
Red Sox in Fort Myers, and return home on Sunday to host the Blue Jays.
ÊÊ Spring training tickets are available online at raysbaseball.com, by
phone at 888-FAN-RAYS or in person at the Charlotte Sports Park
Box Office…the Charlotte Sports Park box office opens at 10 a.m.
RAYS vs. PIRATES—Today is the third of six spring training games between these clubs, and the first in Bradenton…the Pirates defeated the
Rays yesterday afternoon, 10-8 (see below), and on Feb 25, 7-2…in regular-season play, the Rays are 5-7 all-time against the Pirates, having won
only one of four interleague series against them…they last met from June
23-25, 2014 at PNC Park (lost two of three).
ÊÊ Yesterday at Charlotte Sports Park, Rays pitchers yielded 16 hits
and 10 runs (5 earned) in a 10-8 loss…the Pirates scored 4 runs (0
earned) off RH Tommy Hunter in the 5th and 3 runs off RH Kevin
Gadea in the 6th…3B Patrick Leonard (2-run) and SS Brad Miller
(solo) both homered for the Rays…LH Blake Snell made his 3rd app
(2nd start) of the spring: 2 IP, 5 H, 2 R/ER, 1 BB, 3 SO.
WORLD BASEBALL CLASSIC—RH Chris Archer (United States), RH
Alex Colomé (Dominican Republic) and LH José Alvarado (Venezuela)
have all left the Rays to join their countries for the World Baseball Classic…
two other pitchers, RH Jake Odorizzi (United States) and RH José De
León (Puerto Rico) are on their country’s reserve list, meaning they are
eligible to be added to the WBC rosters for the second and/or third rounds.
ÊÊ Last night RH Alex Colomé pitched a scoreless 7th in the Dominican Republic’s 9-2 win over Canada: groundout, groundout, strikeout
swinging (batter reached via passed ball), strikeout swinging.
ÊÊ RH Chris Archer will start Team USA’s opener tonight against Colombia…the game begins at 6 p.m. at Marlins Park on MLB Network.
“
I knew from that moment [the inaugural 2006 World Baseball Classic] I wanted
to be a part of something special. I think it’s a great opportunity to display that
we are united, regardless of all the turmoil. This has always been a dream. …
We have a beautiful country of diversity and freedom and a lot of things that
other countries don’t have. At this moment in time, for these two weeks, we’re going
to play with pride. We’re going to show we’re diverse and we’re united. That’s what the
USA is all about. …This is the highest honor I’ve achieved in my baseball career.”
— RH Chris Archer on playing in the World Baseball Classic (via USA Today)
RAY MATTER—The Rays are 2-4 in their last 6 Grapefruit League games
after a 4-1-1 start to the spring…they have been outscored 51-33 over this
6-game stretch, yielding 8.5 runs per game…during their 4-1-1 start, the
Rays outscored opponents 43-18…the Rays have allowed 17 runs on 31
hits over their last 2 games, losses at NYY and vs. PIT.
SLICE OF GRAPEFRUIT—The Rays are three-time Grapefruit League
champions (2008, 2010, 2014)…this is the Rays 20th spring training and
ninth calling Charlotte Sports Park home…since becoming the Rays in
2008, they have recorded at least 15 wins in seven of nine years—something they were unable to do in all 10 springs as the Devil Rays.
IN COMMAND—The Rays have totaled 118 SO and 27 BB in 12 games
spanning 107.2 IP in Grapefruit League play…Rays pitchers led the majors
with 9.86 SO/9 IP and 4.37 SO/BB ratios…they rank 1st in the majors with
118 SO, and their 27 BB are 2nd-fewest in the majors…on March 3 vs. DET,
the staff’s 15 SO set a single-game club record for spring training since MLB
Advanced Media data is available (2006)—and the very next day (March 4
vs. BAL) they broke the record with 16 SO.

on base (58.8 pct.), compared to 37 pct. in the 2016 regular season…the
Rays are 6th in the majors and 4th in the Grapefruit League with 17 HR…
their 48 XBH rank 7th in the majors and 4th in the Grapefruit League.
UNDER THE LEATHER—The Rays have committed at least one error in
11 of their 12 Grapefruit League games this spring, including five multi-

10 unearned runs, 2nd in the Grapefruit
League (Yankees, 11)…their 16 errors
are 2nd most in the league behind the
Yankees (19).
REMEMBERING
COLIN—On
Sunday morning, the Rays lost a dear family member when Triple-A Durham Bulls
clubhouse manager Colin Saunders
passed away from complications with
diabetes…Colin, who was 42, served in
the same role for the Bulls since 2003
and worked at the Rays spring training
facility every season since joining the organization.
ON THE AIRWAVES—Both games this
weekend (at BOS, vs. TOR) can be heard
on 620 WDAE AM and the Rays Radio
Network…Dave Wills and Andy Freed
are in the booth, entering their 13th season together…among all 30 broadcast
teams, only two have a longer tenured fullseason radio broadcast duo than Dave
and Andy: Detroit (Dan Dickerson & Jim
Price entering 15th season together) and
San Francisco (Jon Miller & Dave Flemming entering 14th season together).
ÊÊ INF Brad Miller and bench coach
Tom Foley are guests on this
week’s edition of the Countdown
to Opening Day radio show…it
airs this Saturday and Sunday on
