Angels, Demons and Savages
The Phillips Collection dives into American abstract expressionism to reveal a
little-known but captivating story that focuses on American painter Jackson Pollock,
Washington’s First and Only Forbes Five-Star,
AAA Five-Diamond Hotel
American artist and patron Alfonso Ossorio, and French painter Jean Dubuffet.
Featuring 55 paintings and works on paper, the exhibition reunites a number of works
by Pollock and Dubuffet from Ossorio’s collection for the first time since they were
dispersed after his death in 1990. Angels, Demons, and Savages highlights art by the
mentally ill and other so-called outsiders, the experimental spirit of Pollock’s technique

Hand-held: Japanese Illustrated Books
Japanese woodblock-printed illustrated books were key sources of knowledge and
entertainment during the Edo period (1615–1868). Artists and writers created many
designs for these books, and the compact, paper-bound volumes circulated widely.
In a striking change from the past, when books were primarily reserved for the elite,
the beautiful, intriguing, and humorous subjects in ehon brought reading to the
masses. Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, Apr 6 through Aug 11.
