RAMSBOTTOM.
RAMSBOTTOM is a manufacturing town, situatued mostly in the
township of Tottington Lower End, parish of Bury, Hundred of Salford, diocese of Manchester, and in the electoral division of South
East Lancashire. It is a station on the East Lancashire section of
the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway, 4 miles N. from Bury, 13£ N.
from Manchester, 8 from Bacup, 8 from Accrington and 7 by road
from Bolton. Seated on the river Irwell, it has a plentiful supply of
water, which, with the establishment of railway communication, has
contributed largely to the advancement of the place in commercial
importance. Cotton spinning and manufacturing is carried on here
very extensively ; there are also calico printing and bleaching works,
woollen mills, paper mills, iron and brass foundries, &c. The Messrs.
Ashton first introduced the cotton trade into the neighbourhood at
the commencement of the present century, and Sir Robert Peel, the
first baronet, established the business of calico printing here, and his
extensive works were for many years carried on by his successors, the
eminent firm of William Grant and Brothers. The premises once
occupied by Mr. Yates, of the firm of Peel, Yates and Co., were con
verted into the commodious Inn, now called Grant's Arms, by William
Grant, Esq., who was a munificent patron of the place, and whose
large print works are now used for bleaching and finishing purposes.
The town is governed by a Local Board, formed in 1864. It
consists of 12 members, whose meetings are held in the board room,
Garden Street. Lawrence Stead, Esq., is chairman of the board, and
Mr. William H. Belshaw, clerk. The streets are lighted by 120 public
lamps. The Gasworks are situated at Stubbins, and were established
in 1854. They consist of four holders, with a capacity of 520,000
cubic feet of gas, which is sold to consumers at 3s. lid. up to 4s. 6d.
per 1000 cubic feet, according to the quantity consumed. The capital
was £46,500, raised in shares of £10 each. Mr. Christopher West is
manager, and Mr. Francis Barrett, secretary. The inhabitants are
supplied with water from the works at Bury. The Cemetery situate at
Hazlehurst, was opened for interment in 1875. It contains eight
acres purchased for about £1,600, and there is a division each for the
Church of England people, the Nonconformists and the Catholics. As
yet, there are no mortuary chapels, and the burial service is conducted
in the Registrar's house.
St. Paul's Church is an elegant stone building in the Early English
style of architecture, erected in 1850 from a design by Mr. I. Holden, at
a cost of £3,500, the site and £1,387 towards its erection being given
by the Messrs. Ashton. The church was enlarged in 1866 at a cost
of about £1,000. It contains 783 sittings of which 426 are free.
The benefice is a vicarage of the annual value of £300, in the patron
age of the Crown, and the Bishop of Manchester alternately, and held

by the Rev. William Henry Corbould (surrogate). The population
of the parish in 1871 was 4,204. The schools attached to this
church were much enlarged in 1868, and will accommodate 700 children.
St. Andrew's Church is a handsome Gothic edifice, with a tower sur
mounted by pinnacles, and the interior is beautifully decorated. It
was built as a Presbyterian place of worship by William Grant, Esq., in
1832-4, but was transferred to the Church of England, and consecrated
in 1875. It contains 350 sittings, all of which are free. The living
is a perpetual curacy of the annual value of £200, in the patronage
of Mrs. Isabella Lawson, and held by the Rev. Henry William
Jones. Population of the parish in 1871, 1,000 souls. Service is
held in Nuttall School, on Sundays, conducted by the Rev. H. W.
Jones. St. Joseph's Catholic Church, now approaching completion,
occupies a site adjoining the present temporary chapel. It is a hand
some stone edifice in the Early English style of architecture, and is
capable of seating 600 persons, and the cost of its erection is about
£4,000. The foundation stone was laid by Dr. Vaughan, Bishop of
Salford, September 27th, 1879, and the building will, it is expected,
be opened in August this year (1880). The mission was first establi
shed in 1862, and the -Catholic population amounts to 1,210 souls.
Rev. Bernard Gustave De Mullewie, priest. St. Andrew's Presbyterian
Church, Bolton Road, is a handsome Gothic edifice, erected in 1873,
at a cost of £7,000. Rev. W. H. Elliot, minister. The Weslcyans
have a large chapel situate in the Market Place, and the Primitive
Mtthodist Chapel is in Bridge Street. The United Methodist Free
Church have a chapel at Patmos. The Baptists have a neat stone
chapel in Bolton Street, erected in 1861, and now under the ministry
of the Rev. Robert Maden. There are Independent Chapels at Stubbins
and Park ; the former being in Edenfield district, and the latter in
Walmersley. The Public Library, Market Place, was established in
1838. It contains upwards of 1,200 volumes. Mr. Joseph Hebden,
librarian. The Manchester and Liverpool District Bank has a branch
here. The 57'th L.R.V. (3rd Administrative Battalion) have their
head quarters in Bolton Street. The Liberal Club occupies a hand
some building in Buchanan Street, recently erected. William Rumney,
Esq., is president, and Mr. Cunliffe is secretary. The Conservative
Club is held in the Market Place. Henry Stead, Esq., is president, and
Messrs. J. K. K. Stead and W. B. Turner are honorary secretaries.
In connection with the Co-operative Society is a library of upwards of
1,700 volumes, and science and art classes, and also elementary
classes are held in the Science and Art School, Ramsbottom Lane.
St. Andrew's British School was built in 1872, by William Grant,
Esq., at a cost of £2,000. Day and Sunday Schools are also in con
nection with most of the principal places of worship. In the town
are a Temperance Society, a Band of Hope Union, and a Cricket Club.
Fairs are held on April 28th, and the first Monday after the 27th of
August.

HOLCOMBE
Is a village in the township of Tottington Lower End, and is

£900, to the memory of the late Sir Robert Peel (second baronet),
are obtained some extensive and pleasing views of the surrounding
country. The ancient parochial chapel, which existed in 16G2, was
taken down several years ago, and the present handsome church was
opened on the 8th of April, 1853, the cost of its erection being
£2,226. It is dedicated to Emmanwl, and consists of nave, chancel,
and north transept, with a lofty spire at the west end. There are
350 sittings, of which 140 are free. The benefice is a rectory of the

WALMEESLEY-WITH-SHUTTLEWORTH.
271
WALMERSLEY-WITH-SHUTTLEWORTH
Is an extensive township on the east bank of the Irwell, extending
from about two to five miles from Bury. It contains 5,065 acres, and
its rateable value amounts to £29,410. The population in 1851 was
4,802 ; 1861, 5,298 ; and in 1871, 5,558. In Walniersley are the
remains of a beacon, probably erected in the time of Queen Elizabeth,
under the influence of the threatened invasion from the Spanish
armada. On a neighbouring hill a prospect tower was erected by the
Grants in 1829, and a better situation could scarcely have been found.
In a clear atmosphere the estuary of the Mersey, near Runcbrn, is
seen from this elevated station. St. Saviour's Church is a Gothic
edifice with square tower, erected in 1838. It contains 677 sittings,
of which 346 are free. The benefice is a vicarage, of the annual
value of JB270, with residence, in the patronage of five trustees, and
held by the Rev. John David Evans, M.A. The population of the
parish in 1871 was 2,879. At Park is an Independent Chapel of
ancient date, and now under the ministry of the Rev. John Robinson.
The United Methodist Free Church, at Patmos, was erected in 1836.
SHUTTLEWOETH was created an independent parish under Vict. 6th and
7th, c. 37.
Excellent stone for building purposes is extensively
procured from the stone quarries. Whittle Pike, in this district, is
1,614 feet above the sea level. The Church, dedicated to St. John the
Baptist, was consecrated February 12th, 1848.
Its style of
architecture is that which prevailed in the 14th century, and the cost
of its erection was £2,499. It contains 413 sittings, of which 284
are free. The benefice is a vicarage, of the annual value of £160, in
the patronage of the Crown and Bishop alternately, and held by the
Rev. Edwin Dyson. Population of the parish in 1871, 3,270. The
Baptists have a chapel in Bank Lane, and here also is a Mechanics'
Institute, pretty well patronised.
