STEWARDSHIP IN SCRIPTURE
The Scriptures today remind us that
by the Eucharist, we all have a
“participation in the body of Christ”
and therefore, “we, many though we
are, are one body for we all partake
of the one loaf.”
STEWARDSHIP IN ACTION
How are we using our gifts of time and talent
to build up the body of Christ in our world?
Do I believe that the real presence of Jesus in
the Eucharist is meant to help me understand
his real presence in each and every person I
meet?
Do I let the joy and peace of the Eucharist
shine through in my attitudes, my decisions,
and my lifestyle?

Why is Mass so important?
Today is the feast of the Body and Blood of Christ. When it comes to Catholic belief, you might describe today’s feast as a celebration of the “heart of the matter.” Every time we love, forgive, show
compassion, or succeed in any capacity at living out the values of the Gospel, it is all, in some way,
rooted in the love that is found in the sacrament we are celebrating on this feast day. This gift of the
Body and Blood of Christ contains everything that Jesus did for us as well as everything he wants us to
do for each other.
We use the term “the body of Christ” in several ways. First, there is the actual body of Christ that was
first conceived in Mary’s womb by the power of the Spirit. That same body grew into manhood, was
crucified, and rose from the dead. Secondly, the “Body of Christ” is also the term we use to designate
the bread over which we pray and invoke the Holy Spirit. We hear that the bread is the Body of Christ
each time we step up to communion, and to that truth we say, “Amen.” And still another way we use
the term “Body of Christ” is to describe ourselves. All of us, as baptized followers of Jesus, are the
Body of Christ present in the world.
Today’s feast day is food for thought on all three counts. We believe in a real, flesh and blood, human
God named Jesus whose body, nailed to the cross, saved all of us. That same body rose from the tomb
on Easter to destroy death and to give us hope. We believe that this God in the flesh is actually present
in bread and wine which becomes his body and blood. He gives us that gift as food for our journey
through life. And as we receive this sacrament of Eucharist, we believe that we are somehow changed.
We become what we receive. We together are the Body of Christ, called to feed a hungry world.
If all of the above is true then why, many would ask, are there so many Catholics who don’t come to
Mass on a regular basis. Perhaps there are many different reasons. Is it because life has become too
busy? Is it because our world offers so many other options of “things to do” on any given Sunday? Is
it because things like sports for the kids has become too much of a priority? Is it that Sunday has become the only day that the family can spend some free time together? Still other reasons may have to
do with the Mass itself. Do I find that the priests’ homilies are just not meaningful or helpful or that
the music is too loud or too soft or simply not to my liking? Is a reason for not coming something more
serious, such as being disappointed or hurt by someone who represents the Church?
Judging or criticizing those Catholics for whom the Eucharist is not a priority is never an option.
Letting them know that they are always welcome to join us, is always a necessity, no matter what may
be the reason for their absence. But it is more than simple welcome or hospitality. It’s the truth that,
no matter what reason I may have for absenting myself from the Eucharist, the sacrament of his Body
and Blood means that Jesus is truly present here loving us, comforting us, healing us, and calling us
closer to himself. He is here during good homilies and those that might bring on a nap. He is here in
the beauty of the music and in spite of every too loud or off-key note. He is here whether the Church
has comforted me or disappointed me. And besides being here, Jesus desires you to come because he
loves you. God’s love, which is deeper and more penetrating than any other, is a gift that is offered to
everyone, and is worth more than any other priority. On this feast of his Body and Blood, we pray that
no one will deny themselves such a treasure.

A Message from Sister Lisa
We are often contacted by generous parishioners who
want to drop off clothing, household items, used
furniture, and the like, and are disappointed when we
send them to St. Ann’s Thrift Store in Sayville. The
fact is we have NO ROOM to store such items. If we
have a specific request for clothing or household goods
we will list such request in the bulletin and then ask
that you call before dropping anything off. Some of you
are hesitant to make donations to an organization that
could “make money” from the contribution. Please
know that we have a partnership with St. Ann’s Thrift
Store in Sayville such that they will honor any letter
voucher I write for any of our Participants, so that the
family can obtain what they need at no cost. In
addition, the monies St. Ann’s receives (generally 25¢ $2 per item) are used to fund their soup kitchen.
Thank you for your continuing and generous
support, and for all the ways that you bring the
compassion of Christ and the tender Love of our good
God to those who are struggling and in need. May God
bless you all.

A GIFT AND A BLESSING
I am so happy to inform you that at the end of this
month, Father Larry and I will be welcoming another
priest to live with us here at Saint John’s. Father John
Gilmartin, who has served for 45 years as a priest of
our Diocese, and who is now entering the world of retirement, will be joining us as a resident in the rectory
and we are fortunate and blessed to have him with us.
My own family and I have enjoyed a wonderful friendship with Father John since our days in the seminary.
Father John is already somewhat familiar with our parish because he lived here in the priests’ residence for a
short time in the 1980’s when he was serving as Director of Catholic Charities. His first assignment (1972)
was as a parish priest at Our Lady of the Snow in Bluepoint. As he became active in Catholic Charities, he
was deeply convinced that the work of that agency
could be strengthened by allowing the faith and the
love of all of God’s people on the local level to become
more truly a part of the Lord’s great commandment to
love our neighbor. The result of his efforts was the development of Parish Social Ministry (often referred to as
Parish Outreach). Thanks to Father John, Parish Outreach now exists in the great majority of parishes in our
Diocese. It enables countless people to participate in
the compassionate work of reaching out to the needy
among us on so many different levels. Our own Director of Parish Outreach, Sister Lisa, who serves on the
Catholic Charities USA Parish Social Ministry Leadership Team, testifies to the fact that the model that Father John developed for our Diocese is a model for other dioceses throughout the country as they try to
achieve the same ministry of love and service. Father
John has also served as Pastor of Saint Anne’s Parish
in Garden City, and, most recently, as Pastor of Our
Lady Queen of Martyrs in Centerport. While retirement
is certainly a new world for him, he will no doubt be active in many ways and in many places in our diocese
while he resides here at Saint John’s. Father Larry and
I are delighted to welcome him and we pray that our
parish and many other places will be blessed by his
priestly ministry in the years ahead.

INFORMATION
That time of year has come when we reach out to our volunteers to ensure that they are interested in
continuing their important ministries with us.
The VIRTUS Program (the approved Child Protection Program), the background check information, and

Knights of Columbus
Sunrise Council #6607
Membership Drive
Becoming a Knight of Columbus member, can
transform your life. As a Knight, you have the
opportunity to support your parish, give back
to your community and to grow in your faith.
Being a Knight is more than camaraderie,
it is being involved with the community while
enhancing your faith. It is about doing
charitable works out of love for our
fellow man and our church.
Being a Knight is a family affair and each
member is encouraged to put his family first,
to help foster the principle of Fraternity.
We strive to have functions where spouse
and family can come together to get to know
each other’s families, and be with individuals
who share the same Catholic values.
Any man age 18 or older may join, provided
he is a practicing Catholic. A practicing
Catholic is one who regulates his life
according to the teaching of Jesus Christ,
observes the commandments of God and the
precepts of the church.
Our council offers members and their families
a unique and diverse array of benefits.
Visit with a couple of our officers and
members to chat about the Knights. We are
happy to meet with you to describe our Order
and its benefits. Give us the opportunity to
answer your questions and find out why YOU
should join US.
The council will hold a membership drive on
the church plaza on Saturday, June 24th and
Sunday, June 25th after all the masses.

Registration information
In today’s Gospel we hear Jesus
urging the crowd to let him who is
“true food” and “true drink” be their
source of nourishment. The crowd is
both angry and confused. They have
to make a decision whether Jesus is
truly a prophet or not. Jesus knew he
would meet people who doubted Him
but he was earnest and persuasive in
His words. Jesus showed no anger
when He addressed the confused
crowd but delivered His message with
love and conviction.
Questions—
1- What does Jesus mean by saying
He is, “true food and true drink?”
2- Have you ever had to make a
decision and not listen to the opinion
of other people?
Registration packets will be going out soon.
Please be sure to send back your
registration as soon as possible.
You must re-register
every year. Level 1 Children coming for
the first time and were not baptized at
St. John’s, must provide a
Certificate of Baptism in order to register.
