G.D GOENKA PUBLIC SCHOOL, SARITA VIHAR English week THEME: Literary Week Celebration REPORT: English Week Celebrated at GDGPS, Sarita Vihar DATE: August 17-21, 2015 EVENT REPORT ‘The English Language is the accretion And growth of every dialect, Race and range of time, And is both the free and Compacted composition of all.’ A great week and many learning-with-fun moments were there for all the students. The school celebrated ‘English Week’ where linguistic skills polishing sessions with fun-filled activities were organized from August 17-21, 2015 at G.D. Goenka Public School, SaritaVihar. An array of events was conducted with the motive to enhance the vocabulary, language skills and make learning more enjoyable. ‘Language is to the mind more than light is to the eye.’ The Literary Week was declared open by the school Principal, Mrs. Seema Sahay and wished good luck for all the activities scheduled for the week. ‘Words make you think. Music makes you feel. A song makes you feel a thought.’ The first activity organized was ‘Sing a Song’ on August 17, 2015, Monday. It revealed the hidden musical talents of the students of classes-VI & VII, where the students had to convert the given Hindi songs into English and then sing in a group. A group of eight students each from both the classes participated. This competition was won by class-VII students. ‘Education is the key to unlock the golden door of freedom.’ A ‘Stamp Designing Competition’ an effort by Indian Postal Department of India was organized on August 18, 2015, for the students of classes-IV to VII where the students spread their creative ideas by designing stamps. ‘To read without reflecting is like Eating without digesting.’ A very renowned author Ms. Vaijayanti Savant Tonpe was the Guest of Honour for the ‘Author’s Meet’ held on August 19, 2015. It was an Interactive Session for classes- IV & V. Ms. Vaijayanti Savant Tonpe has been a writer and editor of children’s books for nearly thirty years. She has won awards for her writing from the Indian Council of Child Education, New Delhi, the Bal Kalyan Samiti, Kanpur and the Indo- Russian Literary Club and Library. She illustrated many of her writing talents. She emphasized the importance of reading saying, “A little reading is all the therapy a person needs and reading is dreaming with open eyes.” When our spelling is perfect, It’s invisible. But when it’s flawed, It prompts strong negative associations.’ An ‘Inter Class Spell Bee Competition’ was conducted on August 20, 2015, Thursday for the students of classes- VI & VII aimed at creating awareness of the possibilities of using varied words in oral and written expressions and add words to the active vocabulary and familiarize the students with functional grammar. The preliminary round was designed in a pyramid structure enabling every student of Classes- IV-VII to participate in the event. The best four students from each House were selected for the final round. In this competition the students’ spellings, one word substitution, antonyms & synonyms, words often confused, jumbled words, words followed by prepositions and rapid fire questions were tested. Class- VI students won the competition. RESULT: 1st POSITION –Class VI (Harshita Mathur, Mrigank Ahuja, Yeyati Prasher, Wajdan Ali Khan) ‘Books give a soul to the universe, Wings to the mind, Flight to the imagination, And life to everything.’ An ‘Inter House Book Quiz’ marked the finale of the English Week Celebration on August 21, 2015, which judged the reading skills of the students of Classes-IV-VII with a varying degree of difficulty. The rounds for the Quiz were- Identify the book, name the author, identify the characters, biography/autography and rapid fire rounds. RESULT: POSITION -1st Radhakrishnan House (Tanishqa Mehra – VII, Viraj Mahajan – VI, Asis Singh – V, Arnav Goel – IV ) POSITION – 2nd Teresa House (Prabodhini Singh – VII, Mrigank Ahuja – VI, Samyak Jain – V, Sushmita - IV) Summing up, the panorama of interesting and knowledge- filled activities to facilitate the effective learning and participation of maximum number of students was organized. The school Principal, Mrs. Seema Sahay praised the efforts of the English Department and congratulated the students and announced the English Week to come to a close.
