Spring 2015 - Properties of the Pacific

feng shu i | Desks
The layout of your working space is basically common sense
— your desk should be an appropriate size with adequate
storage and working surface. The ideal place for a desk is in
the opposite corner to the door, parallel to a wall rather than
at an angle and preferably with a solid wall behind it.
Square and rectangular desks are more suitable for making
money while oval, round or curved are more conducive to
creative work.

A desk in too strong a color, like black, will make working
more difficult.
If your desk directly faces a door, it may make visitors feel
uncomfortable.
1 Create an eco-friendly cleaning kit. Make homemade
oven cleaner with just one cup of baking soda, a squirt or two
of liquid detergent and water. For more on this recipe and
others like it, visit carc2.com; search: “Non-toxic Cleaning.”
You could find a mirror in front of your desk unsettling and
objects hanging behind your head — like diplomas or artwork
— will distract your visitors from business.
Sit with your back to a solid wall so you can easily see the
door and window. Light coming in from a window on the side
is desirable.

2 Invest in a drain snake and say “goodbye” to chemical
drain cleaners. Drain snakes are inexpensive plastic wands
that catch pipe-clogging materials. Find them at City Mill,
or Longs Drugs.
3 Buy “smarter” sunscreen. Choose a cream-based formula
with SPF 30+ and broad-spectrum protection. For a list of
what to look for and what to avoid, visit cwg.org/skindeep/
and click on the “Sun” tab.

4 Buy natural and eco-friendly fabrics. Choose organic
cotton, bamboo, hemp, soy and even polyester made from
recycled materials. For more information on what to look
for, visit greenlivingonline.com and click on the “Fashion &
Gear” tab.
5 Stay away from BPA. BPA stands for bisphenol-A, an
industrial chemical found in many plastic items, including
toys, water bottles and even baby bottles. The Mayo
Clinic recommends avoiding products made with BPA, as
the FDA maintains it could have possible negative health
effects. Look for products labeled “BPA-free.”
6 Naturalize your pet. Processed foods and treats, chemicalladen toys and harsh care products can irritate your pet.
Choose natural products whenever possible. Find pet food
labeling guidelines and other natural pet care tips online at
ewg.org/PetsfortheEnvironment.

In the bedroom, choose bedding that is made of synthetic materials, and
wash sheets, pillowcases and blankets in warm water at least once a week.
Comforters should be cleaned, too. While your laundry is in the wash, vacuum
with a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter. Keep the windows closed
during pollen season, and turn on the air conditioning. Clean mold and
condensation from the frames and sills, Washable curtains made of cotton or
synthetic fabric are best.
In the bathroom, watch out for moisture and mold. Avoid carpet and
wallpaper, and dry the tub after use.
In the kitchen, make sure there’s a vented exhaust fan above the stovetop
hood to take out cooking fumes and reduce moisture. Keep up on dishes and
clear the fridge of spoiled food regularly. Cleaning cabinets and counters will
also go a long way toward keeping your allergies in check.
