Major historical events in education
during the 1870’s
 1870 – Every southern state had made specific constitutional
provisions to establish and support a system of public schools
 1872 – Susan Blow established the first public school kindergarten in
the nation
 1874 – Civil Rights Bill introduced to congress by Charles Sumner
contained a clause requiring integrated schools
 1874 – The Michigan State Supreme Court rules that Kalamazoo may
levy taxes to support public high school, setting an important
precedent for similar rulings in other states
 1876 – John Hopkins University was founded as the 1st university
devoted primarily to graduate study
 1876 – Bloomfield Academy for Chickasaw Girls was established.
Subjects focused on Reading, Geography, History, Algebra, United
States History, Literature, Fine Arts, Music, Art and Physical Culture
 1877 – Reconstruction formally ends as President Rutherford B. Hayes
removes the last federal troops from the south. Conditions began to
deteriorate in the newly reconstructed South as systems of legal
segregation and discrimination were quickly established, so many
African Americans got “Kansas fever” and began migrating to Kansas;
Those who could not afford to migrate, stayed behind in the South and
scrambled for a living as sharecroppers on land they had worked
earlier as slaves
 1877 – 1879 – Richard Henry Pratt started a school for Native
American prisoners of war. He also arranged for seventeen Indian
males to attend Hampton Normal and Industrial Institute
 1879 – Carlisle Indian School opened
