A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
It’s October already! It’s so
hard to believe that the first
nine weeks is coming to a
close. We have been in
school just a little over 30
days and classes are in full
swing. It was wonderful to
see so many families during
Grandparents’ week and
Muffins for Mom is well underway.
Working together...research shows, and
common sense tells us that
when schools and families
work together, children benefit.
Communication is the key please contact us when you
have questions or concerns.
We have several upcoming
events in October:
*Fall Pictures will be Tuesday,
October 6. Fall pictures are prepay, therefore, Lifetouch requires payment when photos
are made.
*Cookie Dough sales will begin on Monday, October 19.
This is always a great fund-
raiser for NCES.
*Report cards go home this
month.
October is a busy month!
Please check the newsletter
for further events and activities. Many, many thanks for
your support in NCES! It
shows!

FALL FESTIVAL
Many will tell you that fall is their favorite time of year. The smell of apples, pumpkin spice, colored leaves,
cooler weather...how fortunate that
we live in a climate that is everchanging. One of the favorite times
of year for our students is the annual
Fall Festival sponsored by the Family
Resource Center. This year’s Fall
Festival will be held on Friday, October 2 from 6-8 pm. There is no
charge for admission, however, you
must purchase tickets ($.50 each) to
play the games. Games cost between
1-4 tickets. The nights events include a chili supper, face painting,
cake walk, cotton candy, sno- cones,
guinea pig balls for students to ride
in, and a costume contest. There will
also be a Themed Basket Silent Auction. Items in the baskets were donated by each homeroom.

BUILDING MATHEMATICAL FOUNDATIONS...
According to the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics,
parents’ attitudes toward their
child’s education and their
involvement in it have a significant impact on their child’s
success in school. In addition,
the American Psychological
Association has published studies showing that a strong early
start in mathematics leads to
later success in school. Look
for ways to make mathematics
fun and interesting at home,
such as:
Count forward and backward
with your child, starting at a
different number each time.
Play store with your child, asking for a delivery of a certain
number of objects. Ask your
child to write the number on an
order sheet. Then adjust your
order by returning some objects or asking for more. Ask
your child to predict how many
there will be when removing or
adding objects. Count by tens
forward and backward starting
at different numbers.
Group. Have your child make
equally-sized groups of toys or
objects. Talk about the number
of groups, the number of items
in each group, and the total
number of items. For example,
if you have 4 paper plates and
each has 3 frogs, you could write
3+3+3+3=12 or you could write
4x3=12.
Compare. Ask questions about
comparing quantities like, “Are
there more forks or spoons?” or
“Can each person have a pencil?”
Order. Ask your child to put the
day’s activities in order. Ask
“What did you do after___?” or
“What did you do before___?”.
Write numerals on index cards.
Have your child read the numerals in order.
Sort toys into categories, like
hard or soft toys; toys with or
without wheels, toys with or without eyes, toys that can or can’t
be used to build, etc.
Flash. Briefly show some of your
fingers and ask your child to tell
or show how many there were.
JOHNNY APPLESEED VISITS NCES
NCES Kindergarten students
had a surprise visit from
Johnny Appleseed on Friday,
September 25! During the
previous week, students had
been learning about apples
and also about the legendary, but true story of Johnny
Appleseed. Johnny’s dream
in life was to produce so
many apples that no one
would ever go hungry. He
began traveling from place to
place, planting apple trees in
open spaces, along roadways and
by the streams. No cabin door was
ever closed to him. To the men
and women he was a news carrier;
to the children he was a friend. He
was also very religious and
preached to people along the way.
His favorite book was his Bible.
Johnny made friends with many
Indian tribes. He lived on food
provided by nature and never killed
animals. Johnny spent 50 years
walking throughout the countryside
planting trees.
