A CHIEF OF ALL CHIEFS
im Beckwourth was born a slave in Virginia
Jaround
1800. He became a legendary
mountain man, fur trader, hunter, and
explorer in the untamed Western U.S. during
the 1820’s and 30’s. He discovered a
mountain pass near Lake Tahoe that still
bears his name. Beckwourth spent much of
his adult life in the West living with Apaches,
Sacs, and other Native Americans, who gave
him the name Dark Sky. He led the Crows in battle against the Blackfeet and
was named “A Chief of All Chiefs” by the Crow Nation. Later, he established
trading posts that became the towns of Pueblo, Colorado and Beckwourth,
California. Beckwourth died in a Crow village in Montana in 1866.
AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY MONTH
HAPPY FACE = HEALTHY HEART.
It’s February again, so let’s
talk hearts! A study that
followed subjects for 10 years
found that people who
express positive emotions
like contentment and
happiness most often
were far less likely to
develop heart disease.
So put on a happy face!
EAT BETTER. PLAY HARDER. LIVE HEALTHIER. LEARN EASIER.
WELLNESS IS A WAY OF LIFE!

A wide variety of fruits and vegetables are offered every day.
A choice of milk is included with all meals.
George Washington attributed his success as a
General, Statesman, and as the first President of
the United States, in part, to the healthy and
delicious meals that he ate as a youth at his
alma mater, Washington High. School meals are
planned to include five food components: meat/meat
alternate, bread, veggies, fruit and milk. Choose an entree
and a serving of fruit and milk. Help yourself to one served/
portioned vegetable and to all that you care to eat from the
self-serve vegetables. And, when offered, enjoy a dessert.
Students can decline items that they don’t want but must
choose at least three of the five food components - to
include at least one-half cup of fruit or vegetable.
This holiday, celebrated
the 3rd Monday in
February, is usually
called Presidents
Day, but the
federal holiday
is officially called
Washington's
Birthday. Presidents
Day honors all of our
previous US presidents.
In honor of Presidents Day, enjoy these fun
facts about presidents of the United States:
j
George Washington was the only president unanimously
elected, meaning all of the state representatives voted
for him.
j
John Adams died on the same day as Thomas Jefferson,
July 4th, 1826. This day was also the 50th anniversary
of the approval of the Declaration of Independence!
j
Abraham Lincoln often stored things like letters and
documents in his tall stove-piped hat.
j
Teddy Roosevelt was blind in his left eye due to an injury
in a boxing match.
j
When Ronald Reagan was shot by an assassin in 1981,
he joked "I forgot to duck."
j
The "S" in Harry S. Truman doesn’t stand for anything.
j
John F. Kennedy was the first president who was a Boy
Scout.
j
William Henry Harrison died just 32 days after
becoming president. He died from a cold he got after
standing in the rain for his inauguration.
j
Martin Van Buren was the first president to be born as a
citizen of the United States. The presidents before him
were born as British subjects.
j
John Tyler had 15 children.
j
Franklin D. Roosevelt is the only president to be elected
four times. The 22nd Amendment, ratified in 1951,
limited presidents to two terms.

woman candidate, Virginia Woodhull the nominee of the
“Equal Rights Party” in 1872.
