Four Quotient thoughts for OWIT Lake Geneva lunch, Lausanne on 3 Feb 2014 "There is an Indian proverb or axiom that says that everyone is a house of four rooms: A physical, a mental, an emotional and a spiritual. Most of us tend to live in one room most of the time but, unless we go into every room everyday, even if only to keep it aired, we are not a complete person." Rumer Godden I work with what I call the four quotients in both my life and work. • • • • PQ - physical - To Live - Human Living IQ - mental - To Learn - Human Doing EQ - emotional - To Love - Human Being SQ - spiritual - To Leave a Legacy - Being Human In my diary I write an activity for each of these each day to which I commit myself to. As Stephen Covey often said - "The most important thing, is to decide what is important" and then to put that in FIRST into your daily life. For example some say that their children are the most important thing in their life and then spend most of their working life and their children's crucial growing up stage, attempting to earn money which they say will make their kids 'safe'. Ask any child what makes them feel most valued or even safe ...it's called time with their parents! In life, surely our No 1 aim, is to live for as long as we can as healthily as we can? If that is the case, we need to spend time in each 'room' each day to ensure there is a healthy balance that enables continual growth, development and sustainability. Too many people live as though they will live forever, even while not exercising, eating and drinking too much and becoming overweight, possibly even smoking or taking drugs! How many of us are: Too busy to exercise? (PQ & IQ) Too busy to 'eat well'? (PQ) Too busy to 'relax'? (EQ& SQ) Too busy to spend time with their family? (EQ & SQ) Too busy to read new material? (IQ) Too busy to contact friends? (EQ & SQ) Too busy to meditate (PQ& IQ & EQ & SQ) Too busy to go on a retreat? (PQ & IQ & EQ & SQ) Too busy to live? (PQ - IQ - EQ & SQ) I am not saying it is easy to live healthily, when there are so many pressures around and so few peers seeking a long and healthy life - it is however very very clear, how one has to live to have the best chance,,,,,,,,,,,,and most do NOT do it. Unhealthy businesses are no different..........in fact I often call what they do as too many people do - 'busyness' - as they do not take nearly enough time to connect and engage with their employees. Just the same way most people do not take time to connect to themselves. As I go around working with organisations in all three sectors, what I find, is that most people / teams / organisations are now too 'busy' to build sustainable, high performing and effective teams. In fact even in the breaks and over lunch these days - delegates go straight on their phones or tablets or lap tops to do 'stuff' - while sitting next to colleagues that they would say they do not have enough time to spend quality time with!!! Well here they are sitting next to each other - doing the self same 'busyness' thing!! In general people have lost the ability to back up what they know with proactive healthy behaviour, they have been sucked into the do - do - do culture of today and have forgotten how to simply 'be'. And if people cannot do it - that means teams and organisations will find it mostly impossible! Not much healthy future there for our communities. On February 3rd we can explore: • What is effective in each quotient - especially SQ? • Is there a quotient order that is best? • How can a company address this for its employees? • The future of staff development is far more EQ &SQ than yet more IQ! • How you can measure each quotient? The healthy society, like the healthy body, is not the one that has taken the most reactive medicine - pills (person) or EFQM / Six Sigma / ISO 9000 et al (business). It is the one in which the internal health building forces are in best shape. The real enemy is fuzzy thinking on the part of good, intelligent, vital people, and their failure to lead. Too many settle for being critics and experts. There is too much intellectual wheel spinning, too much retreating into “research”, too little preparation for and willingness to undertake the hard and high risk tasks of building better institutions in an imperfect world, too little disposition to see “the problem” as residing in here and not out there. In short the enemy is strong natural people who have the potential to lead but do not lead, or who choose to follow a non-leader. They suffer. Society suffers. And so it may be in the future. Four quotient living is about leadership. First about self and then and only then about your workplace. How are you living your life with the four parts of your existence?
